stockpile diapers?

I didn't stockpile for fear of the baby having issues with a certain brand (both my kids were fine with whatever brand of diaper and formula, but others in my family & my husband's family had sensitive skin issues).

But I love buying my diapers at Walgreens. We are using training pants and I have been pleased with their W brand. They also tend to have either Pampers, Huggies or their W brand on sale each week. If you use coupons and then buy that brand when they are on sale--you can save quite a bit.

I stockpiled more with my first DS, after my cloth diapering service went out of business. It seemed like I bought a lot of toys r us brand diapers with coupons, so any family that was traveling that way got coupons and came home with diapers for us. When 2nd DS came along, I just bought the kmart brand of diapers.

I stockpiled them and it worked out great! I bought them when I found a great deal and ended up not spending much at all to diaper my son. Now having said that we had no issues and he could wear any brand.

My dd 13 could only wear huggies supreme. My dd 10 weeks can wear pretty much anything. I got pampers for my shower and huggies as well, but when I had to buy my own, I became a huge fan of the Up&Up target brand. GREAT diapers. I tried the Babies r Us brand and they were awful.

Their sensitive wipes are great too. Bigger then other brands.

My DS 16 could only wear Huggie Supreme at night as they were the only brand/type I would find that never leaked through during the long nighttime. So, DS had different diapers for night than he had for day.

To the OP, I would not stockpile diapers before a baby is born. For one, sizes vary and you never know how long a child will be in a particular size. If you stockpiled too many smalls and your baby outgrew them leaving you with a ton of diapers, that would be a bummer. Also, some diapers just work better than others depending on your child. You will not know this until you have the baby and try a few brands.

On a related note, how are you ladies getting packs of diapers for $2 or $3? :confused3 I see occasional coupons in the paper for diapers, along with sales, but that still seems awfully cheap. Details please! :worship:

As for me, I haven't stockpiled any diapers yet. Unless I get the above mentioned rock bottom price, I won't. DS could only wear Pampers. Huggies didn't fit his skinny little butt right and they leaked. Luvs gave him a terrible rash. If you do stockpile, be sure to tape the receipt to the package of diapers.

What amount do you want to stockpile?

When my twins were born they went through alot of diapers I had a huge fear that I would run out. I had diapers stashed under their cribs, in their closets, in the bathroom, in every closet, in the van, ...just about everywhere. We bought the cases at Sam's and I bought Target brand whenever I had a good coupon or found a good deal.

Problem for us was that they outgrew the diapers way too quickly! I would not recommend stockpiling a large amount, but a couple packs shouldn't hurt.

The bright side is when my twins were about 18 mo. a good friend had twins and I was able to start her out with a case of small diapers and fuel her diaper obsession. I had enough that I added them to every baby gift we gave for about 2 years.

I had two packs of Swim diapers & 3 packs of Huggies (unopened) that I sold on my garage sale for cheap.

We didn't stockpile until we figured out the brand DD can use with minimal leaking. I think if you bf your baby will have BM more often and more chance for leaking. So we were happy to not have a bunch of diapers we can't use or have to return.

But once we found the one we like (pampers swaddlers) we stockpiled as soon as we find the best deal. At one point we bought 9 giant boxes (152ct/box) of size 2/3 and we are still using them now. I still couldn't find a better price than what we paid for it. So we're happy.

As for guidelines of cost, it depends on the brand.
Pampers/Huggies are always cheaper than Up and Up, Luvs, other store brand.
And the bigger the size the more expensive they are.

The cheapest we found for size 2/3 swaddlers was $0.204/pc
When DD wore NB or size 1 we got some diapers at $0.18/pc

Wipes however we stockpiled. If we get coupons by mail or newspapers we always check the stores with sale and pick some up. You will always need wipes. And we buy the unscented ones because it's less aggravating on DD's skin.
Sometimes if the scented ones are sold for really really cheap we would buy some to wipe her high chair trays or bring in my purse to wipe spit, etc.

Good luck on your baby!

If you are worried about costs, why not go with cloth? Significantly cheaper and better for your baby and the environment. Who wants all those nasty chemicals (especially that awful carcinogen Dioxin which is banned in pretty much every other country but we happily swaddle our children in) next to baby's skin?

In terms of your calculations, the typical child uses between 8-10K diapers in his or her lifetime.

Good luck!

Here is what I did, I put $$$$$ on a giftcard every week, that way when it was time to buy diapers I had money set aside...then you can buy whatever diapers work best for your baby!!

Stacking sales, with manf coupons and store coupons. My last major stockpile was from Target. I still had 2 in diapers at that point and I would fill a cart with diapers and wipes and baby/toddler food each trip and go from totals in the $200's down to like $20.

Awesome! :thumbsup2 Is there a particular website or blog that clues you in on the deals?

hotcouponworld or afullcup would have all the details on major diaper deals. I know there have been some over the past year but I didn't follow them since our house is now diaper-free.

I'd say afullcup would be a good starting place to ask about diaper deals. From what I've seen, the people there are super friendly. :)

Thanks! I will check out both websites. I wasn't planning on stocking up on diapers, but if I can find some killer deals I'll definitely change my mind. (LOL, on an unrelated note, I bought 18 packs of maxi pads recently when I found a great deal on them. I figured I don't need them during pregnancy, but I will eventually. Same concept, huh? :) )

oh sweetie, good thinking you will need LOTS of them RIGHT AFTER the delivery. That is just another thing nobody ever told me before I got pregnant... :lmao:

And on another unrelated to diaper note, if you see a sale on tucks pads or witch hazel get those too... :flower3:

:lmao:too funny!! my friends laughed their tails off at me when i was pregnant. every week i bought diapers, wipes and feminine stuff.. i had enough to last quite some time after he was born. it was better to buy it than to have dh run out and get stuff afterwards....

Two ways, a few months ago both our local grocery store and Target clearanced out a lot of diapers. After the $2 or $3 off huggies coupons at half price b/c of the clearance sale the diapers ended up being about $3.

Second, and this happens about once a month, either CVS or Rite Aid has a diaper deal of some kind. I prefer Rite Aid lately, but you can use a $5 off a $20 purchase, and their store coupons (found by watching the video values on their website) and manufacturers coupons, and the rebates/ecb's they offer = very cheap name-brand diapers. These deals seem to run every month or every other month, especially as new product is launched.

Another thing, sign up at pampers and huggies for their emails/rewards programs. Once you are on the mailing list they will send you coupons in the mail better than the insert coupons.

I try to have at least a two month supply of diapers that way I can stay ahead of any sales and not run out. Also, I remember seeing a good price for wipes was about 2 or 3 cents a wipe.

With my oldest (now 13) I stockpiled-it's just in my nature to do so. You should see my pantry closet...but that's another matter.

Anyway, what I found out was that my son was almost 10 LBS when he was born and by the time we left the hospital (4 days c-section) he was over 11 lbs. The newborn size-forget it-didn't fit at all. Luckily I had only bought a couple of them. The size 1 I had bought quite a bit of. Well, he wasn't in them too long either. I ended up giving about 8 size 1 packages to my next door neighbor for her daughter born the same month as my son but much smaller.

Also, I found out that the only diapers I really liked and that worked well for my son were Pampers. I had bought several packages of Luvs (terrible diapers) and my son woke up soaked from every nap. Huggies were ok, Huggies Supreme were better. Pampers were the absolute best. I also found out that I prefered Pampers wipes to Huggies (they are wetter and I didn't have to wipe as hard).

So, it didn't really work out for me all that well. When I had my second son 2 years later, I was better prepared. He, like his brother was big at birth. I bought NO newborn size diapers, some size 1, lots of size 2's. It worked out better.

Check out www.hip2save.com and www.southernsavers.com - they always highlight the best diaper deals at Rite Aid/CVS/Walgreens. For example, right now the big bags of Huggies wipes are $2.50, but only the tubs are featured in the ad. If you have a manufacturers coupon (and many people have reported scanning their CVS card and getting a CVS coupon for Huggies wipes that you can stack with the m/q) they are almost free! I know several people that insist on getting store brand b/c of their cost (and then they complain about quality) but with watching sales and stacking coupons, brand name diapers are WAY cheaper!

I'm going to start stockpiling very soon. I have some coupons for Pampers (hate hate hate Huggies) and when I see a good sale, I'm going to get some NB's.
