Ok I have a bad knee. I must war my brace everyday unless im on my butt (which as a teacher dosent happen much). Well its in the 70-80s here daily and it smells. I cant wash it daily since it needs to be hand washed and takes almost two days to dry. Any ideas on what to do to make it smell a little better? No one else has noticed the smell but its bugging me.

Why don't you get a second brace? One will always be clean! At least that's what my hubby suggested. (He's an Orthotist.)

Febreeze or Lysol? dry scrub the brace with dryer sheets? or use clorox wipes on them and dry it with a hair dryer?

Once you do get it clean, start putting powder on the area before putting the brace on. And I would also re apply the powder during the day to keep it fresh & dry.

Febreze will work. I use it on my son's hockey equipment, it does get the stink out. Spray it on at the end of the day, it will get a little wet but will dry by the morning.

Try the fabreeze only on a small part of it first that won't impact you too much. A friend of mine febreezed all her hockey equipment and had to buy all new stuff 'cause she was allergic! Broke out in hives. So be careful. Good luck!

It would also help to wear a light weight cotton stocking or something similar beneath it everyday. A lot of us nurses used to wear those short cotton socks beneath our white pantyhose back in the day we HAD to wear them. They absorb the perspiration and keep things from getting stinky.

There is a woven cotton tube called "stockinette" that is available many places that carry medical supplies. It comes in many different sizes by inches. It is also very stretchy. This is the stuff they put on your arm before they begin to build the plaster cast. It will stay put quite well and comes on rolls so you just have to cut off as much as you need. It can be washed by hand and dries pretty quickly. It is also white or flest colored. I have ordered it from my pharmacy when I needed it. I used to use it to cover some of my cpap tubing because it made my neck perspire.

This could be put on beneath the brace and the edges folded over or tucked in. It would also help on hot days. I hope you can find it to give it a try.

Here is a link to the product on one of many websites. It is also used to make those newborn hats.

cause there 75 bucks each and through the doc only.

If the brace is semi-permanent that you have to wear the brace for a real long time, you will probably buy enough Febreeze & stockinettes to someday equal $75. So you might as well spend it on a second brace.

I agree with the suggestion above to wear something under the brace. When backpacking, we use silk sleeping bag liners in the sleeping bags, so you need to wash the bag much less frequently and can wash the silk as often as you like because it dries quickly. Maybe go to a fabric store and buy a piece of silk or two to place under the brace? This could be a good alternative to the medical stocking stuff if you don't want extra pressure on your knee. Good luck!

I would really save up and try to buy another one.....but if not make sure it's nice and clean for your date......maybe you could bedazzle it for the big night?
