Has any one booked the "Stingray City Snorkel Tour" with DCL? I was wondering if the snorkeling is all done on a sandbar from 3 to 6 feet of water, or if the water is deeper than 6 feet in some areas.

Some of the water will be deeper than six feet. ALSO- you can book your own if you are interested in saving money. Go to www.captainmarvins.com. Cpt. Marvin is one of the original Stingray City tours and is just a very short walk from the pier. Cpt. Marvin will go to the exact same place as all cruise excusions, but with fewer people. Have a great time!

We did that snorkel tour and were glad we did. It sounded touristy, but we went and loved it! The location, six miles out, is beautiful, there were around 33 stingrays on this sandbar and the water was 4-6 ft. deep. I am 5'4" and could touch my toes. You are wearing snorkel vests that keep you afloat and so you don't have to touch bottom or worry about stepping on the rays. It was not scary at all, just fun. It was an experience not to miss. The water is absolutely crystal clear and there is nothing on the bottom was fine, white sand. I could see my feet. You can rest on the boat if you like.

We did this tour in Feb 04 and there were 9 of us. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the stingray swim but were very disappointed with the DCL excursion. We only had about 20-25 minutes in the water and the guy who owned the boat was obnoxious! He was rude and talked down to us constantly. We talked to others when we got back to the ship who went with Captain Marvins and had a wonderful time as well as much longer in the water.
The most upsetting thing was I assumed the "snorkel" in "stingray city and snorkel tour" meant we would be going to a reef as well. I admit it was probably my fault for not understanding the description very well, but I never snorkelled at all. The masks and snorkels got completely in the way and we ended up wearing them around our necks. IMHO, book something local in advance, and don't waste your money on the DCL excursion.

Thanks for all the info.

Does anyone else not recommend this excursion? I am starting to doubt my decision now.

I highly recommend it, BUT book it on you own, either thru captain marvins or there are 2 other reoutable compnaies, but I dont recall their names. We did it in Oct of 03 and it was extraordinary, but we saw the groups doing it thru DCL or other lines excursions, and there were masses of people. You go to the same spot but you will be in your own little area. Go to www.shoretrips.com and you will find some to book with.
