If you are unable to wait in line, you are given a return time to return to the ride so you can wait someplace else. Its really more involved than that, but that is the Cliff notes version of it.

Here is the thread that explains how DAS works at WDW in Florida. You only need to read the first post; ignore the rest of the thread as it was discussion at the time DAS rolled out. There is a similar one pinned to the top of this forum for DL & DCA if you are going to the California parks.
DAS allows guests who cannot wait in a standard queue environment to wait outside the queue. They still wait, the length of the standby minus 10 minutes. If both your DH and you DS need one, they will not be able to get separate return times for separate attractions for the whole family. Each individual can only have 1 active return time. That is why Disney highly recommends using FP+ in addition to DAS, so you can pre-schedule those 3 rides in advance plus more after those are used.
As another poster mentioned, the Cliff Notes version is that DAS provides for the person using DAS and their party to wait outside of lines. One person in the group goes to the attraction (at WDW) to obtain a DAS Return Time.
The wait for the Return Time will generally be the posted wait time from the Standby line minus 10 minutes.
DAS works best when used with Fastpass. Most people use Fastpass for the attractions with longer waits.
Since you have 3 prearranged Fastpasses and then can make more one at a time, many people find they barely need to use DAS.
Also, I don't know how big your traveling party is, but with two DAS, each DAS holder and members of the party can only have one DAS return time at a time.
So, if it's you, DH & DS, you can be attached to both DAS, but you can't wait for two rides at the same time.
Example: DH has a DAS that has you attached to it. DS has a DAS that has you attached to it. If DH gets a DAS return time for Space Mountain, and DS has a return time for Buzz Lightyear, you have to choose which ride you want to go on at the time the return time is issued, as you can't wait for both at the same time.
Using FP in conjunction with the DAS is helpful. Because DAS isn't "front of the line," you can wait an hour or more for your return time. We would get a return time before using our next fast pass so part of that time was on a different ride. Get a return time before a meal. Get a return time before you leave the park for a break (if you plan to return). The return times for DAS don't expire like a fast pass, but you can only get one at a time.
