Still finding my feet - looking for help on point transfers inbound

I have a situation brewing that does not really surprise me - the family trip to WDW next year that was going to be my first trip home is getting bigger - surprise surprise....

I do not want to borrow too many points from the next use year (do not want to dig a points hole) and cannot bank since I used MB to help keep the costs down

Can someone help me with how transfers work and the positives and negatives (or pitfalls) of them?

Or should I just try and rent/match points for a reservation - would that be less hastle?

I think you're better off borrowing if you have the points. You can always rent or buy more points later if you need to. Why rent now to have points later if you have points that will work. You could always skip a year and either do some of the other WDW resorts or you could try other things (DCL, other areas of the world, etc).

Another member can transfer points to your account and all it takes a phone call from that member (although best to have both of you do the call). However, once there is a transfer both members face a restriction. The one who transfered out cannot during same use year transfer in points from another (only transfer out again). The one who has received points cannot transfer out points in the same use year (only take in again). As a result, those who may rent "points" may not want to do an actual transfer, but some will.

In most rentals a transfer never occurs -- the one renting calls and makes the ressie in the other's name without ever doing an actual transfer of points between accounts. Those kinds of rentals are not subject to any of the "transfer" limitations. If you did it that way, you would need the person from whom you are renting to reserve particular days of your vacation while you reserve the rest with your points and then have the ressies linked.

hi jason... i've been exactly where you are
right after i just closed on my first contract, i kept thinking i'm gonna need more points if i can pull together my big family trip this Xmas.
so, i started researching points transfer rules. if you've followed any of my past posts about points transfers, you'll see that i really got down to all the nitty gritty details about transfer restrictions/rules.

after a few initial phone calls to MS, BWV became available for add-on, so i added-on and thought that would solve my problem.
nope, i still couldn't help thinking, well it'd be even better if i didn't have to borrow ANY points. so... maybe... just maybe i should reconsider transferring some more points in.

so i called MS a few more times, and discussed w/ the experts on this board a few more times, and i think i'm just about ready to give up and just decide to borrow points instead.

i'll save the transferring points hassle for those times when i absolutely have no other choice.
