Irwin's Wikipedia page defaced

INTERNET encyclopedia Wikipedia was forced to remove an offensive message posted on its entry for Steve Irwin within minutes of the Crocodile Hunter's death yesterday.

As news of Irwin's death broke around the world, someone had written: "Steve Irwin's dead! LOLOLOLOLOL!" on the biography of the Australian icon.

LOL is an abbreviation for laughing out loud.

The entry was quickly spotted and removed from the page.

Irwin, 44, died while filming off the coast of far north Queensland. He was stung by a stingray barb through the heart.

Emergency workers sent from Cairns pronounced him dead when they arrived on the scene less than an hour after he was struck.

Wikipedia is a free online encyclopedia open to web users to create and edit their own entries on a range of topics.

After removing the message from the Irwin entry yesterday afternoon, Wikipedia closed it off to anonymous users.

"Due to recent vandalism, editing of this article by anonymous or newly registered users is temporarily disabled," an advisory at the top of the entry said.

A revised entry detailing Irwin's death was posted and the editing function was reopened hours later.

But soon after that happened, the entry was replaced entirely with a valedictory message praising Irwin as a "modern day hero" and "legend" posted by "Stevo".

That posting was also quickly spotted by Wikipedia and replaced.

I know it probably doesn't mean much, but there is something in the bible called you reap what you sow. This is a mean seed that those people are planting and their crop will produce mean results. I take pleasure in knowing what goes around comes around. They'll get theirs. Sorry if I offend anyone, but we've lost an icon, a truly blessed man and because he was a little nuts, people think it's okay to joke about how he died. :furious:

Nope, I'm with you. Anyone who jokes about something like this deserves what they get.

This really is terrible. His poor family.

It seems so weird--I thought that stingrays don't normally attack humans, unless you step on them. I wonder what he was doing when the stingray attacked? I'd really be curious to know what kind of ray it was. Was it a big manta and he was trying to hitch a ride?

DH was diving in Grand Cayman and was sitting on the bottom feeding a smaller sting ray and a large ray came over for the food and bit him on the arm. He had a pretty cool looking scar for a while, round in shape. It was only a couple of hundred yards from Sting Ray City. I have been snorkeling there and have had my picture taken "holding" a ray.

I did not know about this until like 12:30 today. DH drives truck and seen it on CNN while at a truck stop, he called me right away. Geesh DH is the same age as Steve..

We loved to watch Steve, Terri, and the whole gang at Australia Zoo. Our thoughts and prayers go to his entire family!!! :grouphug:

HE WILL TRUELY BE MISSED.

Rest in peace Steve may God be with you and your family

::yes:: I know. I am still taken back by this. I still can't grasp it.

When I saw the news this morning, I couldn't believe it. I loved Steve Irwin. :guilty: Prayers for his family. :grouphug:

This is Steve and Terri's wildlife fund and this is where we are being asked to donate. Not sure whether this is available to US or UK. At the moment I can't even get onto the website. Perhaps we may have to wait a day or two.
I was shocked to hear about Steve - I live so close but haven't visited Australia Zoo. I think I will go sometime soon, to help keep his dream alive, I guess. My thoughts go out to his family and friends and staff at the Zoo - they do a fabulous job.
I heard that next month they are starting building the biggest native animal hospital, to replace the one they already have. It was a project dear to him, I believe. I admire his staff for keeping his dream alive.

There's a show on Animal Planet right now about Steve- I'm at work, so I'm having to really fight not to cry!

It's so very sad! I don't even have the words. My prayers go out to his family. I took my nephew to see the Crocodile Hunter movie and he loved it. It is such a sweet memory to me.

I walked in and my mom was watching it. I nearly broke down.

I am so truly saddened by this. Steve Irwin was one of the main reasons I became more passionate about the environment and wildlife conservation. His enthusiasm and love for the animals he worked with was unparalleled, not to mention contagious, and he will be truly missed. My heart goes out to his wife and two children :(
