Has anyone here ever had high blood sugar related to steroids (specifically solumedrol)?

I am on solumedrol right now and i am temporarily on insulin for high blood sugar related to the steroids.

Has anyone else ever had this before? Did it just magically go away after you stopped the steroids?

I haven't had the issue, but DH has and so has a good friend's DH.

DH didn't go on insulin, but I really think he would have felt better if he had. His sugar was in the high 300's at times, and he was sick to his stomach, and kept breaking out in sweats. The high sugars subsided after the steroids (really once he got to the last couple of days since it was tapered to a small dose by then).

My friend's DH was on small doses of insulin, and his subsided as well.

Good luck

Elevated blood sugars are common with steroid use.

Whenever we have a patient on steroids (esp Solu-Medrol, not so much something like a Medrol dose pack) we automatically start doing accu-checks to monitor their blood sugars and start them on an insulin sliding scale.

Yes, the blood sugars do return to normal when the steroids are finished.
