I'm writing a research paper on stereotypes and stereotypes in pop culture. I can write about any stereotype -- and that's my problem.

I'm having such a hard time choosing! There's so many that I think would be good to write about, but I can't narrow it down.

So, what stereotype would you research?

women. idk if it's considered a stereotype but I don't like the fact that the assumed role of women is in the house. I am not saying that I would not be a stay at home mom, I just don't enjoy the fact that like my husband may assume that I wouldn't want to work out of the house because I am a women.

It just really bothers me about society that women are considered "keepers of the home" and men are considered "protectors."

- What about the skinny beautiful woman? Tall, big ****s and barbie-like. What every woman would want to be.

i'd be interested in doing a paper on the extremely religious/'bible pushers' , it'd be an interesting stereotype to explore for sure. IMHO

just cuz i'm curious; how are you supposed to conduct this research? it'd be so hard if you had to use books as sources! journal articles would probably be easiest to use when researching stereotype.
or are you just supposed to interview subjects and do you own research?

Good one! And things that "make" women "attractive", like high heels, short skirts, and cleavage spilling over.

this is an experiment we did in sociology.
think about all the terms for women. (chick, babe, princess, honey, etc) and every word you come up with (other than female or lady or anything like that, becuase those aren't slang terms) will fit into four categories

women are:
sex objects (*****, slut, tramp
animals (*****, dog, chick)
food (honey, sweetie)
children(princess, baby)

(especially if you take into account using terms for her body parts)

we filled up the white board in class, and every word we came up with fit into one of the four categories.

if you want to write about the view of women by the american (english speaking) society, definitely include this in your report.

It's a combination of light research watching movies, tv, reading books, etc (how the stereotype appears in pop culture), personal interviews (how this stereotype affets people), and scholarly research to back that up with things published in journals, articles, etc (the stereotype in general).

Wow, that's really interesting. Do you know by any chance where this experiment came from? Like I said, this paper needs to be mostly supported by scholarly research.

no idea, but i'm sure if you googled it, you could find someone doing it under an official basis.

Woah thats pretty interesting.

I also think that the stereotype of the "skinny perfect woman" would give you plenty to write about. Its everywhere in pop culture. Have you ever seen a non-skinny woman in a hair/beauty commercial? (Not even just normal or average.)

research "the halo effect." too!

the halo effect is when we see someone who is beautiful, and we assume that they're wealthy, smart, funny, and nice.

the horns effect is when we see an ugly person we think they are stupid, poor, mean, and undesirable.

eta, if you want to do women (which is pretty much what this thread is all about. lol)
why don't you talk about barbie, and the disney princesses? and the size of the average model/actress?

Wow, I had totally never realized that...

And yes, I'd have to say I think the stereotypical "pretty girl" would be a great one to do.

Many of the Dove ones do that sometimes.

We learnt about that in Psychology today :teeth: Well, it was mentioned in a study about whether jurors are more inclined to find someone guilty if the victim is attractive, or the defendant is unattractive, and vice versa.

Stereotypes... Maybe one about how most of the world viewed America in the past, and how it's viewed now? I dunno...

when i studied it in sociology, the study we looked at talked about job interviews. equally qualified "pretty" and "ugly" people at the same job, and the prettier one ALWAYS got the call back.

Stereotypes create assumptions about people. Happens to me all the time.

Thought they weren't allowed to do that anymore... Well, at least in the UK, and if the prettier one is less qualified.

The results of our one found that they're around 20% more likely to find a defendant guilty if they're unattractive, or the victim is attractive.

well, its kinda hard to regulate. all they have to say (if questioned) would be that the (prettier) girl had a better interview or that she seemed better fit to fill the position. :confused3

I actually just did a paper on Cinderella, and the way it influences young girls. Her appearance was one of my big points.

I don't think a lot of people even do it intentionally.

disney princesses definitely gave me extreme misconceptions about how awesome and gravity defying my hair would be. lol;)
