I convinced DH that we really needed a drip irrigation system for all the flowers we've bought this year, and he gave me the go-ahead to buy enough stuff to do the front yard (since the plumbagos seem to wilt the most, and once it gets warm the flowers on the front porch are most likely to dry out). So I installed that this weekend!
Maybe things will survive this year.
I'm also very impressed with miracle grow soil. Even *old* miracle grow soil. On Thursday, I planted a bunch of seeds. Carpet of Snow Alyssum in with the Valentine rose, a mixture of climbing seeds in a medium container I had at the apartment, and a mixture of marigold, alyssum, and lobelia in another spare planter. As of last night, the climbing pot already has sprouts about 2 inches tall in 3 different plant types that I can tell, and the other two pots are already speckled with little green sprouts. And in the spare pot and the climbing pot, the soil was 2 year old miracle grow and that's all I used.
