There is a Stein Mart coming in a plaza near me. What is it?

I just saw a commercial for Stein Mart, and am trying to figure out what it is comparable to. Is it somethng like Marshall's/ TJ Maxx? or is it more like Kohl's?

Is it a "cheaper" store, or an upscale store. The website doesnt say much, except that it doesnt offer on line shopping.

What is it? Is it an "older ladies" store? What is the demographic?

We have a Stein Mart. It is sort of like a Marshalls or TJ Maxx, but easier to shop. Everything is on racks like in Macy's and better dept. stores. They sell more upscale clothing and "boutique" type stuff, and they also do accessories and housewares. I always find really good shoes at good prices there.

I haven't been to ours in a while. It's in a small mall about 1/2 hour away. I really should get over there to see what they've got.:p

We have Stein mart in Buffalo. It's a higher end TJ Max/ Marshalls.

Last time I was in there, I saw a LOT of leopard print. They have some nice stuff but nothing I though was special & worth the price tag. Found a lovely sweater for only $72.00 but not worth the $$$. i'm sure there are bargins if you look.

That doesn't sound like a store for me then. $72 seems really high for a pair of shoes!

There used to be a Ross in the store space. Now its a Stien Mart. I would guess Ross would be similiar competition.

SteinMart isn't like Ross at all. I wouldn't call it a TJ Maxx either. It's a pretty nice store comparable to a department store - but smaller. It has VERY good prices on current stuff - but it's not as cheap as Ross or TJ Maxx and it's set up much nicer then they are. I got a very cute dress there for $40 that was EXACTLY the same - brand and style - as one that was hanging in Rich's (Rich's-Macy's now) for $78. They have very cute and reasonable accessories and houseware things as well. I've bought several really cute pieces of costume jewelry there and I've gotten VERY good deals on clothes for my husband. The only thing they DON'T have is a Jr. dept. And I'm not sure if they have children's clothing - I don't think they do.

Do go check them out - they're a good store.

We have a couple near us and I think the higher end TJ Maxx and Marshalls pretty much calls it. One in our area has a great home accessories department. They do have a limited children's department. Our local paper carries coupons sometimes and the return policy is good. It's definitely worth checking out.

I wouldn't compare it to Ross or TJ Maxx either. Its nice brand clothing, stuff you would find at Dillards or the like, and unique clothes. Its set up like a real store, not a closeout shop where you have to dig. More upscale. They also have a nice selection of shoes (with real people to help you - set up like a real shoe dept), home furnishings (nice stuff!), mens, and children. Also purses and jewelry. I found a great suit at ours for $40! The same thing at Dillards would have been close to $200. (same brand and such)

Ours is closing =( I think its a nice place to stop in when you're looking for great unique gifts or clothing =)

We have a few Stein-MArts here in S. Fla. I fing the clohing abit expensive but you can find bargains if you look. I love the accessories there. There is always a hat, purse etc that I find I have to have. :D

Sounds kinda like Boscov', eh Cindy?

Boscov's is a department store here in the mid-Atlantic, dressed up like Bon Ton or Macy's, but sells mechandise more akin to Kohls and Target.

Ours does! I buy my kids clothes there all the time! I love their stuff...it's mid- to high-end department store clothes at discounted prices. It does not compare to Ross, TJMaxx, or Marshalls in that those stores usually don't get many of each design in, so they group things according to size. SteinMart gets and displays things like a normal department store...a full rack of all sizes of each design...so you can actually find it in your size if you're there when it's newer on the floor.

Their home accessories dept. is good for finding unique, fun pieces for your own home or gifts. Their children's dept has clothes and gifts. They usually have a good shoe dept and men's dept. as well! I really like SteinMart! The deals aren't as good as Ross/TJMaxx/Marshall's (all of which I love) but they have higher-end merchandise and a better selection of sizes. Definitely somewhere to go if you're looking for something special! Their boutique is awesome, although I rarely buy from it as it is expensive!

Higher-end clothes than Kohl's and Target. I shop those places lots but look at SteinMart when I need something nice or special....like for a wedding, nice bridal shower, etc. My MIL buys lots of her clothes there, but she's from the generation that dresses up every day...only in blue jeans if she's working in the yard.... I only need nicer things occasionally, and SteinMart has better deals than our dept. stores....plus if you get on their mailing list, they mail you 15% off shopping passes on a regular basis!!

I guess it woudl be like a Boscov's. ( I dont really shop there anyway).

I was wondering how the demographic was. We have quite a few older/retirees in the town, so I was wondering if they were going to cater to the "older lady" crowd.

We have several here in Virginia Beach and it is definitely one of my favorite stores. They have some great sales and carry unique items that you can not find at other stores. Give them a try - you won't be disappointed.

I wouldn't equate them to a Boscov's either. They have much nicer clothing than Boscov's. SteinMart carries boutique lines at very good prices, and their housewares and home furnishings reminds me sort of like Pier 1.

It really is a unique store, not comparable to Marshall's or TJ Maxx (maybe in pricing, but not in quality or store set up) .

Give 'em a try....it's a place you need to go to several times because their stuff is always changing.

The SteinMarts we have here are fairly complete. Misses, Jr's, women's, Petites (yay!), children's & men's. Also shoes, seasonal / decorative home accessories, linens, hosiery, jewelry, lingerie. Hmm... did I forget anything?

Don't know if they'll skew merchandise toward the matronly side. That's definitely a problem I face when shopping petites. I guess it all depends upon the buyers for that region.

We just got a Ross here. Also have TJ Maxx & Marshall's. I agree with the others - the organization is much nicer than these 3. There are bargains to be had - you just need to know your relative retail pricing.

Happy shopping!!

Steinmarts are incomparable! They have department store clothes at excellent prices, plus wonderful housewares and gifts.

Something I've noticed in my travels is that Steinmarts vary depending on the nighborhood--they were very, VERY upscale in a fancy area of San Antonio, but more middle class in middle class neighborhoods.

I am 29 years old and definitly find lots of items in the boutique section for work. I have to wear high end business casual. Lots of cute sweater sets. This past fall I got a long wool Ralph Lauren skirt for $79. The exact same skirt was hanging in Macy's for $250! Also got a cashmere sweater for $49.

It's not bargain basement pricing but it is also more current than TJ Maxx and Marshall's. TJ Maxx and Marshalls tend to carry last year's items and many times they carry seconds. Stein Mart for the most part carries first quality goods.

They have several mark down sales that can be quite tempting. Watch the paper!

Our Stein Mart in Indiana seems to have alot of what I would call "Cruise Wear". Alot of sequins and bright colors, linen capri's year round. The home dept is nice and they always have cool kitchen accessories. Prices are about the same as any May Co. store during a coupon event. (20-30% off retail)
