I was thinking of making them in the crock pot. Has anyone ever cooked them in the crock pot? I thought it would be nice to wake up and have breakfast ready for the family. I also thought I might replace the water with apple juice. What do you think?

I've never had luck making oats in the crockpot. They turn out very mushy, almost the texture of glue.

I could be wrong on this-but I think if you go to the Food Network Alton Brown(Good Eats)has a recipe for this. It's an overnight crock pot recipe with dried fruit and other "stuff" hmmmm hmmmm!

Yep, from Alton Brown- here's the recipe! http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/overnight-oatmeal-recipe/index.html

Overnight Oatmeal

Show: Good Eats
Episode: Oat Cuisine
1 cup steel cut oats
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup dried figs
4 cups water
1/2 cup half-and-half
In a slow cooker, combine all ingredients and set to low heat. Cover and let cook for 8 to 9 hours.
Stir and remove to serving bowls. This method works best if started before you go to bed. This way your oatmeal will be finished by morning.

Thanks for the assist-it all ets muddle in my head snd I can't remember where I see or hear things:rotfl:

Well, we finally started to get some cold weather. So I opened the steel cut oats and cooked them in the crock pot! They were YUMMY--I used one cup oats, 3 cups apple juice, 1 cup water, 1/2 cup half and half, pumpkin pie spice and dried cranberries. I cooked them on low for 8 hours. I had some left over. It went into the fridge. The next morning I stirred in a little milk and reheated in the microwave. It tasted just as good as the previous morning!

Just wanted to share a great and easy way to start the morning off right!

I have made this recipe a lot. It is sooo good. We love to use dried apples, raisins and I add cinnamon. It is so nice to wake up to a hot breakfast. This honestly makes my monthly menu several times for breakfast.

Oh yeah! I have some steel cut oats but never have time to make them in the morning! Right now I have everything but half and half. I guess I'll have to wait. I am not sure it would work with skim milk!

I does not work with milk. I learned the hard way :rotfl:

I buy the larger size of half and half and freeze it in 1/2 cup portions. That way I almost always have some on hand.

yes, they are a larger more rice looking grain and have a nuttier flavor. They tend to be more expensive than normal quaker oats. I always use McCanns but I am sure there are other brands.

I have been making oatmeal for the entire family, but I will give this a try next week. I love my crockpot and anything I can cook in it, makes my life that much easier.
