Steam Engine Replacements RUMOR

While our Society doesn't engage in rumors, lately there's been a flurry of misinformation and assumptions surrounding the possible conversion to Diesel-hydraulic, or the replacement, of the vintage Baldwin steam engines at Walt Disney World. This message is to inform our members that this is not going to happen, now or for the foreseeable future. Please share this information with anyone who values Walt's legacy of preserving America's steam railroad history.

I will say that it is funny how they talk about saving the legacy of Walt even though the man didn't even want Magic Kingdom to be at Walt Disney World to begin with. How can a park planned and built by someone else other then Walt possibly destroy the legacy of Walt?

I am very familiar with his trains. The trains at WDW were from Mexico. Even if there are a few cars as you say then they can place them on the new engines. I am not saying it is going to happen. But how do we not know that Walt wouldn't have wanted a diesel engine...we don't.

Sorry for my ignorance on this topic...but wasn't Walt the one that wanted "the Florida Project"? I know the park was built after his death, so that much is true, but why didn't he want the Magic Kingdom in Florida?

The Florida Project involved the idea of creating not a theme park but a theme life. A community where people would work, live, play, and visit. There were 5 parts to the master plan:

1 -An Airport.
2- A Visitor's Center.
3- An Industrial Complex.
4- A City (EPCOT).
A Theme Park (The Magic Kingdom)

Here you can see the hand drawn concept by Walt for the Florida project where indeed a park was planned....

He didn't want the park though. He had plans to have a small area for rides in Epcot but he didn't want Magic Kingdom. The board wouldn't approve a budget for Epcot if he didn't include Magic Kingdom that's why he "wanted" it. But really he didn't put a lot of plans into it. The master plans for Magic Kingdom never really start to appear until after he dies.

So why were the resorts planned if there was not got going be a place to relax? Those were part of the original design.

I've never heard that walt didn't want a park in Florida I always thought like PP have said he wanted multiple parts all connected by monorail. Epcot was his baby he wanted that to happen. You would come into the airport and and everything was connected by the monorail. The last stop was the park. In Epcot they would have people movers to get people around. Walt definitely didn't plan on having four parks and a bunch of resorts but he did plan on at least on park.

If you look at some of the videos as well as some of his early maps he didn't have Magic Kingdom. Resorts were for those coming to visit Epcot. Epcot itself was the huge city with shopping, businesses and 20,000 apartment complexes. There were a few rides that were to be included at Epcot, but he didn't want Magic Kingdom. Maybe at first he thought about it, but he came to the point that a theme park wasn't needed. If a theme park was built then no one would care to visit Epcot. If you want to see what he had planned look up Progress City USA in Google. It has the plans Walt had for Epcot.

Absolutely! Walt did want a theme park in Florida.

And this is a thread about confirmation from the society that there will be no changes.

It does matter and is about Walt's legacy even though he did not build WDW. Walt loved trains, specifically steam trains, trains were the inspiration for a theme park, and Walt would want steam trains to remain at WDW.

Therefore keeping steam locomotives at WDW is definitely preserving Walt's legacy. And its one of my favorite and must-do rides.

I don't think I've seen and early map or drawing that didn't have a theme park. Yes walt wanted Epcot to be the big center of attention but he still wanted that theme park for something to do for the visitors.

I agree this is the place to have conversations and talk about things people don't necessarily agree on.
