Stealing from stateroom doors

I think at least some of the magnet thefts are snotty teens or kids (or adults) thinking its funny to go around messing with people rather than people actually wanting to keep the magnet. I base this on the fact that customized magnets seem to disappear along with others. Also, I saw a YouTube video where teenagers were doing just that—snatching magnets off doors and sticking them on another door further own the hall.

While I don't doubt that is true in some cases it definitely was not in ours. Our son was pretty ticked when it happened and he literally walked every single deck looking for the magnets. They were just gone. In hindsight it was pretty stupid of us to even bring them. We vacation in the outer banks of NC every year and thought it would be fun to decorate our door with some souvenirs from our "home away from home". I guess someone else thought those magnets would look great at their house as well.

It was the first and last time we've decorated our door on a cruise.

Maybe we've just been lucky, but in 15 cruises, we've never had anything stolen off of our door. I too have read about all of the numerous incidences of theft, but I personally have never seen a rampant problem or anything that would prevent me from doing my thing. We like to decorate our door, and will continue to do so, even though there may be losers out there causing problems.

It happened to us 2x on the same cruise. It must have been a crazy haunted mansion fan.
I had a FE, pin trading board and tons of cupcake character magnets. Nothing went missing from the pins/FE on this cruise or others. Never had magnets taken until this one. Of these cupcake magnets all were customized. I add our names based on whose characters. I had about 30 different character cupcake. Noticed one day HM was missing. Replaced it with a second one ( I had extra). Then that went missing. The cupcake looked awesome and I know HM is super popular.

Somebody has a custom HM magnet with Maria on it!!

Ps. I did check if it blew off. This happens alot to paper magnets. Somebody opens a door with verandah door opens and the hallway is like a tornado. But they were no where to be found and 2x the same one a bit odd

Also I will continue to decorate. Too many fun. Worth the risk. And not too expensive. I just print at photo koisks and cut out.

If I report stolen items it 100% should be on them. They can easily track down and find that person on the ship.

Probably would take someone 15 to 20 mins to track down the person who stole something. I would suspect security on the ship would have to have access to review footage.

I can almost guarantee that if people start running to them about magnets being stolen off of doors, Disney will quickly put the kibosh on allowing door decorating. One line (I want to say NCL) has stopped allowing it (or at least the last time I was over on those boards on cruise critic that was the uproar). They have more important things to do than track down magnet thieves.

Sorry to be blunt, but that is the truth.

Edit to add: Yes, I just searched and it IS NCL that has banned them. They are using the "fire hazard" reasoning, but I remember from reading the threads that people had had them stolen and complained. My guess is one too many people complained about it, and the simplest way to deal with it is to say "No".

Agree 100% let’s not ruin the fun. DCL gives waay to much leeway on what we do OUT side our stateroom. One can even argue if it’s theft. We choose to leave personal items in the hallway, in an unsecure area. Now if my internal stateroom walls had magnets stolen then I would get security asap.

It is absolutely theft. The thief is taking something that does not belong to him and the thief knows this. But I also agree that you shouldnt put something on your door that you arent willing to lose. I also agree that complaining to DCL is probably the fastest way to get door decorating shut down. So as the new owner of several porthole dressings, please dont.

I usually have some sort of flashing light on my door, that generally draws attention. This time my battery had corroded so I didnt. But I do wonder if the extra attention my door gets kind of insulates it from theft. Or maybe my stuff just isnt that interesting! LOL

The only thing we had happen was someone moved our magnets to our neighbors door in the exact places they were in on our door. Must have taken awhile to get it to look the same just on another door.
our neighbors and us just laughed it off.

I know I shouldnt encourage but that is a funny prank. If it was right next door of course you would "find" your "stolen" magnets so it *is* pretty harmless.

I can understand the magnets going missing, but what is the pin trading door problem? I'm not being rude, I really don't understand. It was my knowledge that people put boards on their doors for people to come trade pins. Is that incorrect?

The problem on our cruise was that someone put out a board of pins so that people could trade (i.e., take one and leave one) and someone(s) came by and just took all the pins without leaving any.

If we ever cruise with family members again with cabins next to each other, I might do this!!! I'd tell them we'd meet them somewhere, wait till they leave and then switch. Come back later to the cabins with them. "Hey, look our cabins got switched!" Then see how long until they realized what really happened, lol!

Oh that's awful!! I was starting to worry because we just went on our first and our boys loved trading on those boards. But we always left one when we took one.

I don’t think its funny to have to redo all my magnets. Plus there is a risk my neighbors would think they were pixie dusted and take the magnets. So I don’t think it is harmless.

Im sorry to have offended you.

It sounds like you had quite a few magnets, I doubt any reasonable person would think a large number of magnets were pixie dusted. And Im glad your neighbor didnt. :)

I guess a part of our door had thicker paint or something because we would often find magnets on the floor. It took me a couple of days to figure out why so then I had to redo. I looked at it as a bonus decorating session and it didnt really take all that long. But it sounds like you must have had way more than me.

It was another poster who posted this happening to them; but it would be a pain if it happened to me as my magnets include a large disney castle that has to be built around the porthole from many pieces. I enjoy doing it on the first day which I always feel is a “wasted day” (not many activities/crowded pools) but I would be sad if someone took it down and I had to do it on a day when I had plans. This reminds me of the thread about the cockeroach prank in the dining room. I can see how some folks find being pranked on vacation to be funny. But to others, pranks while you are trying to enjoy an expensive vacation are just not welcome. And I cannot fathom why a cruise ship guest would think it is appropriate to prank a complete stranger except MAYBE if I were cruising on April fools day.

I’ve heard of it happening too much. I made sure all our magnets had our names or more on them. I went crazy back in the day and our doors were plastered top to bottom in 8x10 sheets. New ones each day referencing what we were doing that day. Next week I have one for our door and one for our DD and SiL. Simple date of sailing and our names and a picture of Pirate Mickey on ours and the ship on theirs, to help us find our cabins.
