When choosing outside/inside you should think about a few things. A) When staying on site you are more relaxed. B) No more driving to parking lot the taking the long walk that seems longer at the end of your day. C) Easy come easy go, no hurry, Hey you got front line access. D) Why worry about dinner and driving to find resturant when the have places in the hotels or take a short stroll or better yet take the boat to City Walk. E) Hang around the resort and they have plenty of recreational things to do. I stayed pool side at the Hard Rock and listened to bands play and also caught the Dive-in-movie. If you paid $50 to $150 outside you got taken/robbed.
Maybe im wrong! So who still wants to save a buck staying outside? HA..HA..HA..HE..HE..HE

it's all about expense and availibility. if you've got the extra $$ , then staying onsite is very much worth it, for all of the aforementioned reasons.

I agree with tigerguy, if there is anyway to stay onsight, that is what I prefer to do. The first time we did disney, we stayed at Holiday Inn Sunspree and it was 99.00 a night.
Then we stayed at HRH for 117. per night, next time it was 126.00 per night, next time it was 153.00 per night, ( we have used entertainment rate, florida resident rates, fan club card rate)and this time we are going to RP for 119. per night. This is the annual passholders rate.

I would pack bologna sandwiches and chips and skip the nighttime restaurant bill if it meant we could avoid all those lines in the parks and stay at one of their beautiful hotels.
I mean, we don't go to orlando to go to the restaurants, we go for the parks.
Also, you are also right about parking the car and not getting back in.

For someone like me who drives up many times during the year, staying at the cheap ho-jo down the street works.
1. $50 a night versus $159 or more.
2. I arrive early, get to the gate first, and everything is a walkon.
3. In the afternoon when the park fills up, I drive to the hotel, eat lunch, take a nap, then come back as the tired are leaving.

But yeah, I would never pay over $100 to stay offsite.

Speaking from a mom's point of view, I can say that waiting in even a 20 minute line with a bunch of impatient kids is worth the extra money for the onsite room. The first time we stayed onsite, at HRH, I mistakenly went in the regular line at one fish two fish, the express line is way around the backside. It was in may and we waited about 30 minutes before noticing that we were not moving too fast. I finally noticed ( duh?) that people were going around the backside and getting on quicker. I ran literally out of the line and around the backside. I felt so stupid but was on the ride in about 2 minutes tops.
I was going to book the clarion hotel this time for 49.00 a night before my husband suggested that we stay onsite. Who am I to argue with that? LOL I was trying to save money as this is not our "usual vacation time" , I just wanted to run up there for the day and see grinchmas, but it seems to have turned into a 3 day affair at the royal pacific. You will not hear any screaming out of me!!
I can't wait.

You can get a decent 3 star hotel near Universal for ~$35 on Priceline.

That said, I HATE the walk from the parking lot! And Universal does offer their onsite guests a lot!
