Hi all!

This board is so helpful! I really have no clue as to anything Disney, but hubby and I are trying to plan a trip for our 2 kids.

What are the benefits of staying on site - we're looking at the Disneyland Hotel at the moment.

Thank you so much!

I think the only benefit of staying on sight is the fact that you can go to every magic morning available while you're there.
I’ve heard some people say they like to stay there because you never leave the Disney atmosphere. When you stay at a hotel across the street from Disneyland you kinda lose the Disney atmosphere when you leave Disney property.

YES! If it is in your budget I highly recommend staying on property.
We stayed at Grand Californian and we LOVED it!!! It was close (although still a walk) and it was just wonderful. I am sure Disney Hotel is great too.
Without a doubt I say stay at a Disney hotel.

We enjoyed our stay at the DL Hotel. It was magical!!! You can take advantage of Vacation Planning for handling all you PS resies, pre-ordering room service goodies & if interested ordering special gift baskets to be left in your room (as surprises for your kids?)
You also get MM on all mornings offered.
If you are there during peak times & the park goes to capacity, guests of the 3 hotels get entrance while they may turn others away (now, I've never heard of this happening, but it is mentioned as a perk....so either they're planning ahead or they've actually done this)
You can give them a copy of your credit card & charge all of your meals & purchases to your room.
You can have purchases made during your day, delivered back to your hotel.
The pool is fabulous & we actually scheduled an afternoon to do that & walk the beautiful grounds.
You can use the Monorail in DTD to take you into the park or walk thru DTD. (anyone can do this)

Hope that helps.....I have quite a few pictures listed in my TR (page 9, post #124) http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2088835

Have a wonderful trip!!!!

1. You get the use of MM on the days it is offered, as mentioned above. Those MM hours come in SO handy - we never realized until last december how much you can get done in an hour.

2. All guests of any of the 3 DLR hotels have access to the special DCA entrance in the GCH. This means that in the morning, if you are a guest at DLH, PPH or GCH, you take your ticket/AP and your room key (Key to the Magic) and stand at the DCA entrance in GCH and they will let you in a bit before opening of DCA. You stand inside DCA for a few minutes, then you can walk over to Toy Story and get in that line before anyone who comes into DCA the 'normal' way. We beat a lot of people into that TSMM line by using the DCA/GCH entrance.

3. You can have any purchases you make in the parks sent back to your hotel so you don't have to schlep them around with you or get an expensive locker. THe packages are ready at the Bell desk of your hotel at 7:00 a.m. the following morning. I have used this service (free) a lot.

Yes, we did the toy story line thing ahead of everyone else too! It was great. We were the 3rd family in line and a CM walks you to toy story (so you do not have to run or walk like a crazy person like you do to get to peter pan at DL LOL). Go over to GCH and go to the DCA entrance around 9:15 (when DCA opens at 10) and we were 3rd in line. They opened up at 9:30 for us to go in and stand in line for toy story..the line starts RIGHT by GCH/DCA entrance. We were unable to get Soarin Fast Passes though like we planned while we waited in line b/c they were not giving them out yet. But if you do not want to wait for toy story later in the day this is the way to go.

The multiple MMs are good, but of course that depends on when you'll be there.

The package delivery is only as good as the paperwork the stores have. During our first PPH stay we TRIED to get things delivered, but the stores we spent money in didn't have the paperwork, and suggested we go to another store. Well, the whole point of sending things back was for the "out of sight out of mind" aspect of traveling with a 3 year old, and if we had to leave WITH our stuff that point was defeated. So we never had things sent back to the room.

Magic...for ME, there is absolutely NO MAGIC in DTD. It's just shopping, and shopping bores the pants offa me unless I have scads of shopping money. It was misery to go through DTD.

But when you're staying at HoJo and take the way down Harbor on the Disney side (instead of following the people across the street and walking down the hotel side), you can hear the Disneyland sounds and music. Much much more magical...for us, at least.

Don't get me wrong...on our second trip to PPH (which ONLY came about b/c the AP rates at PPH were the same price as the HoJo rates until a week before our trip (when the entertainment rate came out for one of our dates)) we actually enjoyed it (figuring out the walking route through Grand Cal instead of through all of DTD helped), and we're planning a DLH stay soon. But it's not "magical" for us to walk on through, and I'm fully planning on figuring out a schedule that ends us in Tomorrowland before each time we return to the hotel, so that we can just take the monorail back to the DLH. :)

What are the benefits of staying on site - we're looking at the Disneyland Hotel at the moment.

1. It makes it a bit easier to return to the hotel mid-day and relax/go swimming, and then return to the parks later.

2. You can get into the parks early on some days.

3. You can use the quick entrance at the Grand Californian to get into California Adventure quicker.

#1 and #3 do it for us...we don't like doing the commando/forced march visits, so being able to easily get back to the hotels and return later after recharging makes a big difference for us.

For us it is just part of the vacation to stay at one of the DL hotels. We really like the Disneyland Hotel--it holds lots of family memories for us, and we feel like we are really on vacation when we stay there. We spring for a view overlooking the pool and the falls, and love the extra space in those rooms.

We have also stayed in the GC--that is nice too--but for us the DLH is "our" vacation spot.

I know, isn't it great, using the GCH entrance? We didn't think it would make much of a difference at first, when we went in the GCH DCA entrance. We spent a while just standing there by Grizzly River Run, and then, as you said, when it ws time to walk to TSMM, there was no mad sprinting to get to the line. It was a very calm, normal pace. So I thought we would be beaten by all the people running through the main entrance, but we beat them by about 3 minutes! And they showed up in droves behind us! So even if you get just a few minutes of an edge over the people coming in the regular way by using the GCH entrance, it is worth it because that TSMM line gets crazy FAST!

Just to voice a little of the flip side of the onsite/offsite debate...

We stayed at GCH the first time, and it was fabulous! I'm so glad we did. It was a big splurge, but for our first time to any DL property, it was really worth it.

The second time, however, I'd read enough and researched enough to realize that I could get a hotel room for 1/2 up to 1/4 (!) the cost of staying onsite, and still be in close walking distance. It's so different from WDW, where it's hard to stay offsite. Here, there are hotels right across Harbor that are as close or closer than DLH, let alone PP.

We got the Entertainment book rate at HoJo, one block up from the Harbor crosswalk. It's as close as many of the DLH rooms, and closer than PP. We were able to get a premium room on the top floor of the tower, facing the parks with a perfect view of the Matterhorn (and the fireworks, if only they'd been going the weekdays while we were there!). They have the comfiest beds, and a wonderful new water playground area by the hot tub. For $74 a night (it's $79 now) we got a beautiful room and great service. I think we paid something like $350 a night at GCH. So... it kind of boils down to cost vs. the "Disney experience." It's good to research your options! :thumbsup2

It's absolutely worth it to me. I stayed at Hojo in Jan for the $59/night rate, and we were upgraded to a premium Disney view room. The staff was super nice and the hotel was fine. The price was amazing.

However, it lacks all of the magic for me. I hated the walk on Harbor--not because of the distance, but because I hate walking on that busy, ugly street. When we returned to our room the first night, we had to step over a homeless guy on the sidewalk near the hotel, where it was very dark and no other pedestrians were around. It was a big mass of bushes (with plenty of room for lurkers), the sidewalk, and the street. If you stay offsite, don't walk back to your hotel at night on the Disneyland side unless there are others with you!

The hotels I've stayed in offsite (with the exception of the Hilton) were basically standard motel-type properties as far as the in-room amenities. It may sound petty but I LIKE granite counters and wood furniture and real glassware. I love the Disney touches everywhere in the rooms. I love having a place where my kids can watch the old Disney cartoons while we're waiting to be seated at the restaurant, where there is a ton of memorabilia to look over, where characters stroll through the lobby and grounds. I love the fabulous landscaping and pools.

I also love DTD, and not because I'm shopping but because I enjoy seeing people having a good time. I like the musicians playing and love watching kids dance to the music. I love all the fountains and decorations. It's much nicer to me to walk through that than down Harbor.

There are a lot of benefits to staying onsite, as previous posters have listed, but to me the biggest benefit is the sense of always being in the resort, or to be more exact, of NOT being in the somewhat ugly reality just outside the gates.

Can't anyone do this really? Or do you really need to be a guest at an onsite hotel? Do they check your room keys?

Anyone can use the entrance after a certain time of day, though I can't remember what it is...11 AM? Something like that. Before that, they will check your room key before allowing you in. As Sherry said, you can actually get in before the gates open but you have to wait at a rope before proceeding to TSMM etc. When we were there in Feb, they allowed us (resort hotel guests) to go on Soarin' before the rest of the park opened.

Well that is my new thing that I learned today! Thanks..... I never knew that before. I knew that the entrance was open to everyone during the afternoon because we often enjoy eating at WWS for lunch, but I did not know it was limited only to on-site guests during the early morning. Good to know!

Thanks everyone!

I really appreciate everyone's input.

One of the big factors for us is the pool. My little girl is 4, and not really swimming on her own, so a standard pool is not a lot of fun for her (I basically have to hold her the whole time). We wanted to stay at the HoJo, as their pool area looks great, but it is booked for the week we want. The other hotels close by that we looked at all seemed to have standard pools. The pool at the Disney hotels look wonderful, and I am sure both my kids will have fun there.

Now, just have to swallow paying *that* much more...oh well, it's all for the kids, right? And it's not like we will be back at Disney in the next little while.

Thanks again! :flower3:

As DizMe said, they will open up that special GCH/DCA entrance after a certain time like 11:00 or noon or somewhere in there. But the crucial early morning hours pre-DCA opening are the key to taking advantage of that feature - especially if you want to get in the TSMM without a long wait. As I said before, at first, when we were standing there inside of DCA, waiting by Grizzly River Run, I wasn't sure how this was going to benefit us. I thought, "Okay, well we are waiting just like the people are waiting at the front entrance, but we are just in a diferent location." Then, when we started the trek over to TSMM and I could see that the only ones who were moving in that direction were the resort guests in line wiht us, I knew we were on to something. And then we got in the line and 3 minutes later, the throngs from the front gate arrived in the TSMM line behind us. So it was worth it just for that reason alone! And I imagine if you are not a TSMM ride fan, this trick would work at any other of the popular rides, too. You get just a few minutes' edge over the people at the main gate and can get into a line before it gets crazy - just by using that GCH entrance before 10:00 a.m.!

But, yes, later in the morning, they let anyone through that entrance.
