So here's my story...until I was 16, my parents had a timeshare at Vistana Sheraton Resort so every year we went to WDW, we stayed there. After they sold the timeshare, we did not go as often but the times we did go, we stayed at CBR or POP. So, I have stayed off property more times than I've stayed on property. I LOVE staying on property. My BF and I are thinking about possibly going in February of 2017. Staying off property seems SO much cheaper but then I remember we won't get all the Disney amenities. I am so torn. Will it still have that "Disney" feel if we stay out of the Disney bubble? Do any of you stay off property and would you recommend it? Where do you stay?

I prefer to stay on property. I don't personally find it that much cheaper at all to stay off site because 1) you need to factor in the cost of a rental car since you won't have disney transport and magic express, plus gas and tolls. 2) You need to factor in parking which is $20 per day. Since you are only going to need one regular hotel room, sure you could maybe save $60 a night on your room, but pretty much all of that will then be spent on a car and parking. This will allow you to eat at cheaper restaurants if you wanted to which is nice, but this is comparing a $100 a night disney room to a $40 a night room off site...the hotels offering $40 a night rooms that I have been to in the Disney area are certainly not guaranteed to be clean, bug free etc. I have never had a problem with a Disney room being old, dirty, bugs, toilet issues, faucet issues, air conditioner issues etc etc etc...The equation changes when you have large groups going because Disneys charge for larger rooms is so high but if you are comparing value resort to cheap off site motel to me its a no brainer to stay at Disney. If you want to save a bit extra on your room book it on Orbitz as they almost always have a 15% off promo code for hotels that you can find online that works with Disney hotels in addition to whatever discount Disney offers on room only bookings for that time period

To me, it depends a bit on how you visit WDW. I definitely am not impressed with the value rooms we stay in as compared to the Hampton Inns we stay in when we travel elsewhere. The furnishings and beds are a notch down. However, I totally get the Disney Bubble and have chosen values and moderates for the theming, transportation (to and from airport as well as between parks) and we've often gotten the dining plan, which only comes with onsite stays.

Like @newdeal, I'd say if you're comparing a simple no-frills hotel room offsite and a value resort onsite, AND if you'll spend a great majority of your time in the parks, I definitely choose onsite!! However, if you'll be spending some time at your resort/rental and you're talking about renting a condo/house vs. moderates or deluxes, the math may change quite a bit. For me, it's needing space for more than one hotel room and/or planning to spend more time actually in your hotel/rental that would sway me to the cheaper off-site choices.

I would far rather stay off property. Let's see, pay a huge amount of money for a small Disney-decorated hotel room, or pay far less money for far better accommodations? Last year we rented a 4 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a private 24' pool and games room for far cheaper than we could stay in even just a Value hotel room. I can't even begin to tell you how much better that is than staying in a hotel room. We could swim whenever we wanted (including at 1 or 2 am after getting home from the parks), no walking or driving to a crowded resort pool - just slide open the door of your living room and jump in. No relying on Disney food every single day, for every meal, we could cook our own whenever we wanted. No standing in lines waiting to order, especially at breakfast. Instead of having to get up, get dressed, ready and head down to a busy cafeteria or restaurant, I could instead lounge by the pool in my pjs eating my breakfast in peace and quiet (and take a quick swim after). No relying on Disney buses to get to/from the resort and parks. Instead, we had our own vehicle and could come and go as we please, and often made it back to our home quicker than we would have, if we had to rely on Disney transportation. Traveling as a family, there is a huge amount of value in being able to have separate bedrooms. The kids could go to bed on time - and we could stay up and play pool, go swimming, watch tv in the living room etc... We had space and privacy and weren't on top of each other for the entire week. Need to do laundry? Walk a few feet to the laundry room, instead of having to lug it all down to a resort laundromat.

Even if you don't stay in a house and just stay in an off-site condo, I'd still prefer to have the peace, privacy and space that off-site lodging offers. To be able to come and go as we please, to be able to cook our own meals instead of having to rely on constantly eating out etc... and of course to be able to save all that money! By staying off-site we were able to experience more of Disney, than if we had stayed on site. We were able to take our massive savings (for us the savings was well over $1000+ when you factored in the savings on lodging and eating) and splurge on a few experiences we would have missed out on otherwise.

As far as the Disney "perks" of free parking, EMH, magic bands and early FP+ booking, those are easily worked around, which you can read about in the Throwaway Room thread. A $50-70 campsite gets you 2 days of free parking, free magic bands, 60 day FP+ booking, and if you time it right, even a day or two of EMH.

I love Disney, but, staying in a Disney decorated room is definitely not worth giving up the perks of off-site. We enjoyed our Disney trip far more staying off-site, than we would have staying on-site. I would have no problem staying on-site if I was just doing a quick trip, maybe 3 or 4 nights. But for longer trips? No thanks.

The way to save money is to stay in a condo or rental home that has a kitchen, then you don't have to eat out nearly as often, which is where a huge portion of the savings comes in. You can get 2 bedroom condos at Windsor Hills on special for $300 a week which are far nicer than Disney value rooms, not to mention a fraction of the price.

We always stay off property now. Most of the Disney properties in our opinion are over priced for what you get. There are of course exceptions but for us staying off property is really an easy choice. We once spent roughly $600 a night at the GF and the room was filthy. We've also stayed there and had great rooms but it's still very expensive. I just booked a lake front room at the Ritz for under $200. We've never had a bad experience off property and there are hotels very close that are a fraction of the cost (Bonnet creek etc)
There's always trade offs no matter what you do. We always rent a car so no cost difference there. Literally for us the only difference is we have to drive 20 minutes to the park and pay to park. Many will scoff at this but even taking the monorail can add up in terms of travel time when you count waiting at the station, the ride, transfers etc.
The real question is what is your budget and what properties would you be comparing? With that information I'm sure you could get much more succinct advice and specifics to help you decide what is best for you. ;)
In regards to the Disney "feel" TBH the biggest issue we always have is Disney over load. In short too much of a good thing starts to detract from the appeal. We are quite happy to leave the bubble for a good nights sleep and better dining options. With small children staying on property is great. For adults only I don't see the attraction.

I for one would never stay off property.

Is it more expensive, of course. However, I enjoy being immersed in Disney 100% of my trip. I wouldn't want to get into my car, park in a huge expansive parking lot and pay for parking, and leave the Disney premises daily.

Moreover, the transportation is worth it. It's a great feeling to know your room is a boat ride/monorail/bus ride away to take a midday breather and go back and relax.

I have never stayed off property. I'm not trying to come off as a snob, but I would never imagine or consider staying off site.

There are a number of compromise properties where you are just as close or closer than Disney owned properties but they are not Disney owned. Such as Swan/Dolphin and Bonnet Creek and Disney Springs area properties. I would also recommend checking out the Orlando hotels board to get a the scoop on what properties have what features. Swan and Dolphin for example use Disney transportation and you get EMH and you can still book fastpass + 60 days out like Disney owned resort guests. Just no magic express or dining plan. I don't know much about the others personally but I think I read that Bonnet creek offers transportation to and from the parks.

For us staying off property is like not going. We are a bunch of stuck up snobs I know but we do stay MOD so that makes up for it. It just does not feel like Disney staying off site to us.

We do occasionally stay at the village when passing through for a night or two and cab it to POR for dinner and a stroll but that's it.

Oh heck yeah!! We never stay on property, we always stay off. I'm not going to slam anyone who does. If my wife and I were going by ourselves for just a quick weekend trip, and we had money to burn, we'd consider staying on property, but even then probably wouldn't. We went alone for our 10th anniversary and stayed at a Sheraton (not the Vistana).

First and foremost, it's cheaper. Way cheaper. We rent nice places for between $650-$800/week. By nice, I mean 3 or 4 bedroom, 2 to 3 baths, full kitchen, full amenities we'd have at home. Don't think you'll find anything even remotely close to that kind of value on property.

We're a family of 5. I love my kids to death, but the 5 of us in one hotel room for a week would not go well.

Wife and I are big time fitness, bodybuilding nuts. Our nutrition is very specific. On vacation, I'll relax it a little, but still could never eat out every meal. Just wouldn't work for me, and my wife would flat refuse. Having a kitchen is fantastic!! No, we don't spend hours cooking and cleaning. We may spend 10-15 minutes in the morning packing lunch and on one of the nights we're home chilling, we throw some chicken breasts in the oven. So "cooking" isn't work, just takes a few minutes. That also adds to making staying off property so much cheaper than staying on. Since we pack 95% of our food, we're just paying grocery store prices, like we do at home. Saves a fortune over eating out, even with the Disney dining plan.

We can have fresh clean clothes at our convenience. Again, it's not hours of doing laundry. It takes a couple of minutes to throw stuff in the wash/dryer.

Multiple bathrooms is incredible to have when you've got a family of 5. Makes getting ready and getting cleaned up so much easier.

We have room to spread out. We spend a ton of time in the parks, but do take some time to chill out at home. We'll use the pool at the community we stay in, which is typically a very nice place and nowhere near as crowded as a hotel pool. Plus, the condo or townhouse has so much room for us to spread out and relax. My boys can go into one room to watch their TV, my daughter her own and my wife and I get peace and quiet. That's absolutely invaluable, and something we could never get in a hotel room. Or you can spend great family time together. Perfect example is last Thanksgiving. We were in MK in the morning/early afternoon, then went "home" to our condo. We had the local Publix make us a full Thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings. Cost far, far less than any restaurant would charge. We didn't have to cook. We sat down at our own dining room table and had a wonderful family meal together. Then we sat in the family room and watched football. Best Thanksgiving ever.

We always have a car with us. I'd never want to rely on Disney transportation. We can come and go as we please and go anywhere. Only time it really "adds" to our time is at MK and it's really not a big deal. But we can go to a store if we need supplies, or very often we go to Dunkin Donuts or Menchies for dessert. We also frequent the gift shops on Rt. 192.

At least for us, it doesn't diminish the experience in any way whatsoever. In fact, it adds to it by giving us so much freedom and flexibility. I just couldn't see how we'd ever make it work to stay on property, nor would we want to.

As for where we stay, we've tried tons of places. We stayed at Sheraton Vistana, many years ago. It was really nice. Our favorite place is Villas at Seven Dwarfs Lane. It's only a few miles from Vistana. If you leave Vistana, go past Disney entrance (Rt 536) and keep going. You'll come to the intersection of Rt. 535 and Rt. 192 about 1.5 miles up. Turn left at the T intersection and Seven Dwarfs is the second traffic light. Takes less than 7 minutes to get to Disney entrance. We use VRBO to find our place. There are SO many nice places along Rt. 192 to choose from.

I grew up much like you, staying off-property for most of my trips when I would go with my family. Since I've gotten older and traveled with friends or my fiance, I've chosen to stay on-site, but there are certainly perks to both. I prefer on-site because I don't have to worry about airport transportation, a rental car or paying for parking, and I love Extra Magic Hours. That being said, many of the timeshares we stated at were WAY nicer than a Disney value resort and made sense for a larger family, both financially and space-wise. I'm sure that one day when I have my own family, staying off-property will be seriously considered again.

I think like everyone else has said, it all depends on your wants and needs. My husband and I have no children and are complete park geeks who get up mega early for rope drop and stay until park close every night. However, if I had a larger family with kids who needed space and a pool, I'd definitely consider off site. This next trip, we opted to save some money by renting DVC points to stay at SSR. That way we get a deluxe villa for a reduced rate and still get all of the amenities of staying onsite (except less mousekeeping, but that's no biggie). We also will eat breakfasts in the villa each morning and may pack some simple lunches to take to the parks. But other than that, I love the convenience and magic of staying onsite. Good luck in making your decision!

We stayed off property for our trip in 2014. Mostly because my parents came with and we wanted a nice size condo. We ended up staying at Vista Cay and it was a BEAUTIFUL condo resort. That being said, our trip next year will just be me, my husband and daughter so we will be staying on site this time. But staying off property and paying for less then a value resort for much more room and convenience of a kitchen is nice as well.

As others have already stated, it's what you need versus what you want and/or can afford.

The Disney Springs properties on Hotel Plaza Blvd. are technically "on property" and offer free transportation to and from the parks. They are not overly Disney of course, though the trade off is a good value at nice properties. We have stayed at all the resorts on Hotel Plaza Blvd. and have great stays before we lived here.

You can find great deals at all of these properties at Mouse Savers and other online sites. Our last visit to Orlando (prior to moving here) was at the B Resort. We paid under $100 per night and had a great time.

Do your research, ask questions here as you are and I would 100% think you can find what you are looking for and for a great deal as well!

With us, it really depends on our vacation "mood". Sometimes we want to be immersed in the Disney magic, and other times we like to explore the Orlando area and spend maybe just one or two days at Disney. I honestly don't prefer one over the other--they both make great vacations!

Offsite, I recommend renting a home. We rented a gorgeous four-bedroom home in Clermont a few years back for about $1200 per week (pool and game room!). Another option is renting a condo from Wyndham Bonnet Creek. You're on Disney property, per say, but you don't feel 100% immersed.

Being in South Florida, I always stay at the Disney Springs hotels instead of a Disney resort because it enables me to visit more often. I simply can't justify the high prices of Disney resorts. That said, I have no use for Disney's Magical Express and I'm there often enough that the additional time of Extra Magic Hours aren't a big deal. If I needed either of those, the pro/con list might be different.

For an upcoming stay at the end of August, I'm at the DoubleTree Suites Lake Buena Vista at Disney Springs. There are many pros:
  • All rooms are 540 square foot suites. Twice the size of a room at Disney's Value resorts.
  • Interior corridors.
  • Being one of 229 rooms instead of one of up to 2,000 room at some Disney resorts.
  • Phone calls to the Front Desk are answered by the Front Desk, making problems easier to solve.
  • Distance from the bus stop to room is 2-3 minutes.
  • The ability to earn points to redeem for free room nights later.
  • Free breakfast because of my continued loyalty to Hilton Hotels.
  • Walking distance to Disney Springs.
  • Walking distance to off-site restaurants where a quick meal isn't $16.
  • All of that for $78/night via a special offer from http://disneyspringshotels.com/
I totally understand the resistance to stay anywhere but Disney for a Disney trip. Still, it does make sense for a lot of folks.
