We can't afford to rent a cart each day, and we aren't renting a car either. I'd like some feedback from those of you who didn't rent a cart and survived. It seems that everyone is saying to rent one, but it MUST be possible to stay in the cabins and rely solely on the bus system. I just can't justify the $40 or whatever it is...a day to have one.

We camped and did not rent a golf cart. The last time, June 2000, we did not have a car and we survived! We used only Disney transportation. It was only a couple of minutes to the bus stop. We never had to wait long for the bus. Sometimes the bus was crowded, but not too bad. We didn't have a heat stroke. We didn't get eaten alive by mosquitoes. We have never had any problems with Disney transportation at all and we have camped at Fort Wilderness the last three times we've been down. We have never rented a golf cart. You're right, that's a lot of money that could be put to better use. But I'm sure there are some people that really enjoy the carts and see it as money well spent and that's okay too. It's one of those personal preferences.

The whole Fort Wilderness experience is not lost if you dont rent a cart. It comes down to a matter of convenience. We stayed in a cabin for 5 days last June and rented a cart for only 2 days, We used that time to explore the campgrounds in more detail. We didnt leave FW for 3 of the 5 days we were there. The Disney transportation can be inconsistant at times, As long as you understand the travel times you shouldnt have a problem.

Hi Marcy, we have stayed at FW many times and have never rented a golf cart because we couldn't justify the added cost. We have travelled around FW without any problems. We normally stay near the center of the campground and from there it is only a 10-15 minute walk to any part of FW. On the days we go to the parks, we just wait for the bus to come by. We have not found the wait for the buses that long, but since we live in the country, I can't compare it to a typical wait time for buses in a city. You will survive just fine without a cart :D , or even the rental car for that matter! Have fun.
