So, what are the points like if you just want to stay in a regular room at bc ? Do you always have to stay in one of the DVC rooms? Are points lower for the regular rooms?
I think we're really going to buy it this time! I'm getting very excited.

You cannot use points for a room at a resort where there is a DVC. So you can't use points at AK, BC or BWI. You can use points at YC. Points are HIGHER for the YC rooms then a studio at BCV!

You can't pay points for a room at BC. If there is a DVC attached to a resort, you can not use points at that resort. So BC, BW, WL, and AK do not have standard rooms for points. You could stay at the YC though. The points are pretty high. A standard room in value season is 36 points on the week days and 65 on the weekends. During peak season is is 48 and 88.

hmm, that's odd. I just assumed it'd be less points in a regular room. So, are most regular rooms that same 36 point figure? Is the Poly going to be about the same as the Contemporary? What about from deluxe to moderate?
From reading the posts, it sounds like not many people actually take the route of staying in a non DVC. But, we have a goal to stay everywhere, so that's why I have so many questions about it. Thanks!

It might be a good idea to buy enough points to stay DVC every other trip in a DVC resort, and then pay cash for your other trips - you'll end up spending MORE trying to use points to stay at the non-DVC resorts than if you just pay cash. Or do what a lot of us do - stay cash at a non-DVC resort on weekends when points are higher to revisit some old favorites or try some you haven't.

Yep, that's exactly what we were thinking just a few minutes ago. Currently we stay in the more affordable resorts on our long trips and the deluxes on our short trips. If we do teh DVC, we can probably flip flop that idea.

When you stay at a non-DVC WDW resort, you're actually trading out of the DVC system, and the rules are different.

1) $95 booking fee.

2) Points for non-DVC resorts are NOT fixed, and usually go up every year. Like the other non-DVC trading options, the required points for the regular WDW resorts are renegotiated every year. There's nothing in the contract to prevent them from going up dramatically.

3) Cancellation rules are also different. If you book using points at a non-DVC resort and have to cancel, the points become 'reservation points' and can only be used at non-DVC resorts.

If you want to occasionally stay at a non-DVC resort using points, I wouldn't consider it a big deal, as long as you understand that it'll eat points like crazy. However, if you see yourself staying at the other resorts as much or more than you would at the DVC resorts, I'd say that was a bad financial move. Your costs are going to go up every year, and at some point, you might find yourself priced out of the other resorts - meaning that you'd no longer have enough points to stay for more than a few days.
