We are considering coming to Disney a day before so we can get the most out of our first park day. We are traveling 14 hours from PA..
My mom says that usually if you call them when you're on your way they usually will give you a pretty good deal (aka a few dollars less than on the website) my mom hasn't been to Disney in like 7 years so I'm sure a lot has changed.. but does this have any truth? Right now ASM is $120 a night for the night before we check into POP. I'm trying to decide if I should book before I leave or on our way down. Thanks for any insight!

Since it is in the same value category why not just add a night on to Pop?

I've never done it but realized after doing a 6am flight out of Boston, I think it would be worth adding a night for sleeping only so we do walk up refreshed to tour and not tired from an early flight but we usually do deals through a TA for a deluxe... in that case I would keep my deluxe rez through the TA but add on a night at a value like pop or stay at the Swan or Dolphin with a teacher discount if available...

If I was already at a value or mod, I would just add on to that existing reservation as I'm not sure the money is worth the hassle of moving bags where a savings between deluxe/value would be worth the extra to move...just my 2¢

Well that was the other thing, is tacking another night onto the reservation easy? That's why I didn't want to do POP i wasn't sure if it was easy to do that.

They may do that if there is availability but depending on when you are going, that would be questionable. I don't think you'd get it for much less than $120. Plus if you add a night info your reservation, you may not need to move rooms.

I will tell you, from experience, that they will not give you a deal anymore. We drove down from Chicago, and my DH must be speedy, but we expected to not get to WDW till a 3 hour drive in am. We got there at 7pm night before. I called at like 2pm, and the price for 1 night value was no deal, I even think it was more the expedia was offering. I say book in advance. I would also just try and add a night to current reservation.

book in advance. We've left home early and called on the way down to add a night onto our reservation several times. I always go down knowing what room only discounts are out there just in case we have to go 'plan B'. Generally we can easily add a night on but one trip we had to book room only at CB and then move to All Stars the following day.

Much easier to just add on a night before you leave home.

Disney does not give last minute room discounts. If you wait until you are driving down you will pay rack rate so there's no point in waiting.

If you have a room only reservation you can try to add the night onto your current reservation. If there are no more rooms in the same category, it will have to be a separate reservation which you'll have to pay for when you book (new reservation, new deposit). If you end up with 2 reservations in the same room category you can ask to have them linked. Mention you have a continuing reservation when you check in for the first night. As much as possible CMs will try to let you stay in the same room. You will have to go to the lobby and check out/check back in.

If you have a package reserved and you add one more night, you'll have to pay for it when you book it. There's a $50 change fee that might be waived because you'll be increasing the total on your package. There will be a $15 paperwork fee that will be charged.

If you end up with 2 reservations in the same room category you can ask to have them linked. Mention you have a continuing reservation when you check in for the first night. As much as possible CMs will try to let you stay in the same room, but there is no guarantee. You will have to go to the lobby and check out/check back in for the second res.

Well that was the other thing, is tacking another night onto the reservation easy? That's why I didn't want to do POP i wasn't sure if it was easy to do that.

As long as there is availability...yes. We have done this two years in a row and it just took a quick phone call and payment.
