Staying Cool in Heat and Humidity?

If you have a fridge in your room, put a couple bottled waters in the freezer part the night before, then take the frozen bottle to the parks the next day. It's amazing how long it will stay cold...then you can drink it and also use it to rest on the back of your neck or forehead, ect...to cool down.

Even a cold wet paper towel from the bathroom is a huge help. If dropped accidently or lost no big deal, when it gets hot either rewet or go get a new one.

Mid day break is a MUST!!!! We usually shower an change clothes mid day too esp our socks an shoes. Of course light colored clothing esp the shirt.

I also noticed white shoes which I would NEVER be caught dead in at home makes a difference too on how cool the feet stay.

Seek out the A/C when possible... eat in A/C even for counter service cut thru the shops when you can. Do Thunder Mountain early in the day save Space Mountain for later in the day as its a nice A/C building even if line is longer or get a fast pass for after the heat builds some don't wait to long tho as all the FP's might be gone.

POtC gets you in out of the sun for a good while as well, save IASW for later in the day it's always a cool refreshing ride usually not much of a line. DH loves the HofPres I hate it but go in to get out of the heat an take me a short nap while he watches it.

MGM BaTB gets hot do that before LM and Muppets

Just got to know where your goin what you are doing to take advantage of the A/C and the outdoor attractions.

When you get that bottle of icy cold water run the bottle over the back of your neck for a few minutes, instant cool down!

I hate wearing a hat but I must at least wear a visor at WDW!

Walk in the AC as much as possible, take a break indoors for a cold drink. It is so easy to get overheated quickly, my DH did this last June and he was in sad shape, thank goodness for the medical facilities they got him rehydrated and cooled off he rested there for nearly 2 hrs, saved the day!!

Just adding to the list...

Wear light colored clothing. I can't even describe the difference I felt when I wore my darker colored Mickey shirt last June as opposed to the other days when I wore lighter colors. The heat was unbearable for me that day!

I read this over and over and am starting to be very very scared.

I quite literally very rarely wear any other color than black. I am comfortable in it, it goes with everything, and my one variation is dark brown.

The only other colors I would even consider wearing are the deep jewel colors.

I look horrid in anything pastel or white (okay sometimes white with black/denim bottoms for a very casual look but I do not like it, it just is a run to Wal Mart/ clean the house sort of outfit.

I also do not wear tight fitting anything.

I also have very dark brown hair, long, that I do not put up except again to clean the bathroom or if I am tossing my cookies.

yes, I am scared, anyone ever wear dark colors in cotton breathable fabrics and not feel so horrible?

Now, all that said, I will dress my little ones in white as much as possible and hats and so forth. No way my fashionista Jr Hi'ers would be caught dead in white either tho. Heaven help us all!

Misters and breaks and frozen water bottles may have to do.

urban girl at heart I guess, me and NYC get along very well.

PS have to add last time we visited in Sept, I swore I'd never return in that horrid hot month and here I go again and all for food. I may need professional help.

What's your best tip for staying cool in the heat and humidity of WDW?

a bandana (you choose the color) tied loosely around your neck is amazing when you wet it with cold water....heaven in the three H's.

Has anyone tried the Coolmax tee shirts? Thinking of getting something like this for our trip in Sept. Last Sept I was so wet so maybe this will help???

alison

cotton will keep you coolest in the heat. reason: it takes so long for it to dry, adding evaportive cooling. so leave the polyester (coolmax, etc) at home and save it for your trip to the mountains, where it is hot during the day and cold at night--and a damp cotton shirt would be very uncomfortable and possibly dangerous.

If staying dry, not necessarily cool is your preference, then a poly shirt would be great. But you will be warmer. i like the new cotton shirt after the afternoon break idea.

Ditto for me, too. But I do add some khaki colors to my wardrobe, which is what I try to wear in the summer.

Have you tried neck coolers? They really help in keeping you cool.

My advice is to get some sort of Coolmax shirt. I don't know if you have a Kohl's near you but I picked up a few "moisture wicking t-shirts" that just look like cotton t-shirts (fit great and Im PICKY) and I got them for like $9 each and they have black, charcoal gray and browns! These types of moisture wicking shirts are usually found in the athletic wear departments. Some are a weird material but if you look around you can find some that just look like normal shirts.

I really would think about putting your hair up though. It'll be worth it. Even if you don't like how it looks, you don't know anyone there, you'll never see them again and everyone will look sweaty and not very attractive right along with you! haha It was very hot and humid on our last trip and we went with friends to boot. After the 1st day I was wearing a dorky hat all week and my hair looked like a brown cotton ball... but I didn't care. I was at Disney!

Even better than a wet washcloth or bandanna, carry a couple of plain cloth diapers (the plain flat fabric kind, not the kind sewn to be thick in the middle) -- they are more absorbent, larger and lighter than either washcloths or bandannas, and the open weave lets more air pass through. I carry them all the time in hot situations, and no one under 60 has ever recognized what they are -- they just look like a piece of white fabric. Easy to tie onto things, too.

Sunscreen that has a barrier in it such as titanium dioxide will help to keep you cool; the particles literally reflect UV radiation away from your skin.

Also, something no one has mentioned: make a conscious effort to walk on the shady side of any street or path. You may end up walking against the flow, but it really does keep you a lot more comfortable.
