staying awake

How early is too early? Do you get up real early too? Are you sleeping through the night, at least 7 hours? i am a big believer in quality sleep. We can't burn our candle at both ends. There is a big price to pay when we become chronically sleep deprived.

Whatever you do, DON'T take a nap in the evening unless you truly need to stay up very late. Naps can wreak havoc in a normal sleep routine. If you're just getting drowsy in teh evening, get up and take a walk. The cool air will refresh you immediately.

Eat sweeties ( candy ),

I brought sooo much of my favorite US candy home thinking it had to last me...no...i just eat stap it in at night and sugar rush till the wee small hours.

Its 02.18am here.....

yeah I need to break that habit getting better at it except when I am at home
and if I am lucky I get seven if not 4 and I am ready to call it a night at 9 and I was advised to stay up until 10

With my crazy call schedule, I've actually gotten really good at staying awake. I was actually just on call last night, and only had 3 hours of sleep the entire night, after a busy day, then a 6 hour emergency surgery in the evening, and a couple procedures, I had about 3 hours before I had to come back for rounds. I try not to drink coffee past 2 or 3 am when I'm on call, because then I won't get any sleep when I get home. But, I do try to stay plenty hydrated, and drink lots of water. Also, a full bladder, while uncomfortable, and not the smartest idea, will definitely keep you awake. I also chew gum, not sure why, but I guess the combination of fresh breath and chewing keeps me awake. Right now, I'm in the SICU, most of the patients are very much out of it, so they're not going to care if I chew gum when I see them. If all else fails, I will actually pull my hair up into a very tight ponytail, so if I start to nod off, my hair will pull me awake.

Although if you're getting tired easily, and there is no reason for it (no recent change in your routine), you might want to consider getting it checked out. If you're anemic, it can definitely make you tired.

what i am failing to tell you guys and I should have said this in the beggening but I get up around 7 and on a roll untill 730 sometimes

.

I so sympathize. I worked night shift for 25 of my 32yrs as a nurse, mostly in the NICU/PICU. During those years I was having babies, homeschooling and working so I was always sleep deprived. I used to be able to stay up for 36 hours straight, because I had to. But I can't do it anymore. In fact, all that night shift earned me a couple sleep disorders, weight gain and depression. So I'm glad to be off that treadmill now, but I just wanted to say Hang in There. I'd like to tell you it gets better *but it doesn't:laughing:* Night shift is always night shift.

I find I get tired faster at night when I'm bored. Try doing something intellectually stimulating to keep yourself from feeling so tired.

I also find physical activity helps as well. If you're able do some jumping jacks, go for a walk, ride your bike.
