Hi there,

I'm trying to plan a cruise for our anniversary next year. Since this will be our first cruise I know nothing about the accomodations so wanted to get some opinions. Trying to keep costs down we will have to go with one of the more reasonable rooms. So my question is, is it worth it to pay more to have a porthole in the stateroom?

I'm sure I will have more questions in the future and I've been enjoying following the posts so far!!

Thanks so much!!

Vicky, unfortunately, there is no right answer to this question. It is a personal decision. There are those, like myself, that go for inside cabins so we can cruise more often. There is ample opportunity on the ship to gaze at the sea. Having said that, a porthole is wonderful, and a verenda is even better.

As Credit Man said this is really a matter of personal preference.

We don't cruise that often, and an inside room wouldn't really allow us to do so - more a matter of time availability and all the other things we want to do! :p

Having said that a lot depends on the length of cruise and what you like to do. And I agree with Credit Man that a verandah is great. But if my choice was either an inside room or not going, and it was a shorter cruise, well I'd probably consider it.

Presuming it is just you and DH an inside would probably work.

I agree with the others that it is personal preference. I prefer to always have a veranda or at least a porthole. On our five cruises we have had 2 regular verandas, 2 navigator verandas (my favorite) and one of the large portholes. I don't think I would do well in an inside cabin and since we do spend time in our room it is worth it to us to get an outside room.

As others have said they don't spend much time in the room so an inside works for them. All a matter of personal preference.

Bottom line is the ship itself and all it has to offer is wonderful! No matter what room you are in!

If u think u might like to have a porthole,
but would not like to pay for it ......

Thanks for all of the great info and opinions!! We won't be going until Nov 2005. I'm planning on the 7 day land/sea vacation with 4 days at sea. Since I've only been to WDW once I want to enjoy the best of both worlds!

Hygiene99 I checked out the website, thanks!! I'm going to see if any of the secret porthole rooms are available! Although I don't think we'll be spending a lot of time in our room, it would still be nice to have the light!!::yes::

Thanks again!

We were fortunate enough to get a SPH Room on our 3-Day cruise last November. I was thankful to have it, but I don't think we spent more than one waking hour in our room if you don't count time in the shower/bathroom.

I don't think I'd pay extra to get a "real" porthole room on a 3-Day cruise. I'd be more likely to splurge for a porthole or verandah on a 7-day, assuming I'd have more time to enjoy it.

On our 4-day cruise we had a cat 11(inside no split bath) qith 2 adults and 2 kids. The room was fine, size wise and my only complaint was that you have no idea what time of the day it was. We are going on the 7-day and have splurged for a porthole...I don't think I would spend the extra $$ for a verandah. Besides if I did it once I would get spoiled and want it time and again.....so for now we will stick with the "cheaper" staterooms.....

We had an SPH on our first cruise and didn't realize how lucky we were. When we went on our next cruise--4day- we got a Cat. 10 inside cabin because we didn't want to spend the extra $$. It really was fine except for the fact that we didn't know when it was morning. We are not morning people and love to sleep in so many days, because we didn't set an alarm we weren't waking until 10 or so. That made it a late start and I didn't like that but hubby still didn't want to set an alarm. It is weird because you wake with this weird feeling of what time it is. Otherwise it is fine. Enjoy!!

debm - that is the only problem we have with the inside staterooms - is it 3am or noon. You can't tell because your room is absolutly and totally dark. No outside light. We have sailed inside twice and other than the darkness, it really was not a problem. They are all nice rooms. Now that we have had a SPH room we always sail in one of those or in a cat 9 or 8 with portholes. Like someone said, if we got a veranda, we probably wouldn't want to sail without one again.

You are buying the "common areas" of the ship (unless you are on the new QE2 or is it QM2? - where different staterooms have different areas of the ship you are allowed in:scratchin ). So "book the least expensive room on the best ship around". You can't go wrong with the Magic or WOnder.

If you want to try for one of those Secret Porthole Rooms, do it as soon as possible. They go FAST! We had one for our last cruise and enjoyed the light, but would not have paid for it if we had to get a Cat. 8 or 9 room. We are on a tight budget and we have to pick and choose where to put our vacation dollars.

I have one of these rooms booked for our next 3 cruises we have booked. Yes, I have 3 booked, just because I know that to get one of these rooms you have to move fast.
