stateroom bathroom question

The doors also open out because they bathrooms are tiny, you can't really get in and close the door without hugging the wall as the door swung closed

We were on the Wonder, the doors open in. We put a battery powered light on a shelf in the bathroom as a nightlight and left the door open. We had no issue with the doors moving/making noise during the night.

One nightlight option I like are Pak-lites. You can get ones that have a high and low setting where the low is perfect for a night light while the high mode will illuminate the bathroom plenty well to use at night. I can attest that they last for hundreds of hours on low and tens of hours on high so you would only need one, unlike glowsticks. When I first tried one I put it on a battery I pulled from a smoke detector and set it on low and left it running continuously. It lasted over a month. If you want to stick it to the wall you can just tape a magnet to the back of the 9v battery.

Remember, it's a ship. One of the main rules aboard ships is secure as much loose stuff as possible. So doors should be shut. The light blast was not an issue, there may be a little light but it's not going to light up the whole cabin.

While on this topic, I read an amusing comment about bathroom use on cruises the other day. It was saying virtually all the bathrooms aboard cruise ships get used through the night, mainly because of all the old people on board and all the drinking on board. I thought that was amusing.

On the Wonder, Magic and Dream they opened inwards, or at least they did in all of the rooms we had. I'm pretty used to not turning on the lights at night at home when I get up in the middle of the night so I never even bother to turn the lights on. The bathroom isn't that big so it's not too hard to figure out where everything is by touch. DH turns the lights on but I have to say that I don't really notice it. The bathrooms are on the same side as the bed so the light isn't in your eyes but reflected onto the opposite wall kind of around the corner so it's quite subtle when on. Anyway, it's not the light but the sound that's likely to wake someone up. It's a bit like a jet engine when you flush.

I never even thought about the sound of the flushing! lol! We'll be on the Fantasy, so I guess it's doors opening out for us. Motion sensor lights are a good idea, too.

When I was on the Wonder in 2013..... I didn't realize the closet door had a Velcro lock. It was like sleeping in bowling alley the first night as the doors went back and forth. Never making that mistake again.

If you have kids, you'll probably want a second light/glow stick, near their beds, either turned on or easy for them to turn on (small flashlight, for instance). In our room, the kids beds were farther from the bathroom than our bed, so having a light on their side made it easier for them to get out of bed and get over to the bathroom. Our room also had a curtain that could be drawn between our bed and their area, so the small night light they had didn't bother us. Not sure if all rooms have such a curtain, but it was very helpful.

Oh, and flushing is MUCH more disruptive than the lights, but what can you do? Think of the noise in an airplane toilet. It is like that.

Flush with the lid closed and the bathroom door closed. This helps.

Not sure if toilets are different in different rooms but my bathrooms flusher button gets hid behind the seat lid and you need the lid up to go, so to flush one must close the lid first

It's 11pm on a Thursday night and I'm talking toilet operations. I need a better life :-)

Just thought I would add that my children are so exhausted after a full day of ship activities they sleep soundly not disturbed by much. Flushing noises included. Glow sticks on the door handle did come in handy though.

Now that's attention to detail in design!

How long do the glow sticks last? The night or a few nights?

One halloween we had a couple actually break open (all over my rug!), so I haven't had them in awhile.
Some of the bigger glow sticks have a bit of glow left after the first night, but not really enough to light the area. We've never had a problem with one not lasting a full night. I buy them at the Dollar Store. They are usually 4-8 for a dollar depending on the size. I stick it in the bathroom sink. They can get wet (my son takes baths with them all time) so you can wash your hands over them and then just toss it in the morning.

We bought a few LED nightlights. We had one dim one that hung on the door to the bathroom and one that we kept on in the bathroom all night. The lights in the bathroom are BRIGHT and I definitely would have been bothered by them. The LED nightlight we got on amazon (there were hundreds of options, none very expensive) worked well, and was a better choice for us than buying multiple chemical-filed glow sticks. LED bulbs last for a long long time, so it's efficient and easy.

Don't forget that, at least in verandah rooms on the Dream-class ships, there's a nightlight built into the ceiling in the couch area too. It even has its own dedicated switch at the desk.
