We are! They have so many different ways to get in cheap if you want to go during the week.

I've never been one to try the different fried foods but I think I might try the fried Chili Pie that won this year.

I'll definately get a cold root beer and a caramel apple.

Possibly, if I can take a day off during the week to go. I don't want to go on a weekend or one of the days that any of the large school districts are off.

No way!!! Too crowded for me. Maybe if I could take a day off during the week, but I can't stand the crowds, the parking 40 miles away, yuk. I also hate that you have to buy stupid tickets to get food. I think they do that so you spend more money, but it actually causes me to spend less because I hate to stand in two lines for one corn dog!

My DD19 will be there next weekend for the Texas/OU game, though.

Don't know how it is now, but when I was a teen (think 1950's) I went and the people there scared me. They looked very rough, and the side shows were so fakey. Even we, as teens, could see how they were faked.

Wow, someone want to talk to the folks that run the California State Fair? They moved our State Fair to July because they felt the last two weeks of August, and Labor Day weekend were too late because most kids are back in school by then and can't go during the week.

A lot of the top food vendors didn't come because they had commitments to other fairs , and of course had no where to be during the traditional California State Fair run.

Okay, how can Texas pull off a successful State Fair so late in the year, when everyone is back to school and back from vacation?

They give tickets to all the school kids and assign them days of the week for each school district. Our school district's fair day is Wednesday, October 6 (I believe). Dallas is usually on a Friday.

Then they have different ways to get in for less money. Wednesdays if you bring three cans of food or more per person, it only cost $2 to get in. Of course this does not include parking. Senior day are Thursdays and anyone 60 or over gets in free. There are also days earmarked for if you bring a Cinemark ticket stub, you get in free. Also, there is a Dickies clothing day where if you are wearing Dickies clothing you get in free or a reduced price. Not to speak of the Coke/Dr. Pepper cans that get you in for reduced prices. Those are all that I can think of. All of the above only apply to the weekdays though.

Tuesday - Thursday is the least crowded. We like to go on Wednesdays.

They let kids out of school to go to the state fair?:scared1:
Only in Texas!

Any one got links to all the promos/discounts?? My aunt wants to take me, but try to do it the cheapest way.

Oh, yeah, it's a big deal. When I was in high school in Corpus Christi, our school hauled everyone to Dallas in school buses. It was a blast.:cool1:

P.S. Hook 'em, horns! :thumbsup2

OMG I want a Corn Dog NOW!!!!

One of the few times I eat fried food during the year is at the Texas State Fair.

Whenever I see someone eat a corny dog that is not a Texas State Fair Corn Dog...I feel sorry for them. They have absolutely no idea what they are missing!

My vacation this year starts on the 3rd and I leave for Disney on the 4th. I don't do the state fair on the weekends either....that is pure crazy talk :rotfl: So I probably won't get to go this year :(

Hopefully the food and wine festival will make up for it ;)

North Carolina had their state fair in October too, and people took their kids out of school to go to the fair there as well.

I am really thinking about going this year. Last year it rained most of the time and then we were in Disney so we just didnt bother with it .
We will be in Disney for 3 of the weeks it runs so we better hurry up and go if we are going

Looks like you will have nice weather if you go this week! :thumbsup2

We'll be there Saturday for the OU/TX game! It's my once-a-year "fried food fest", and I can't wait to have a corn dog and fried oreos. I'm especially excited the game is at 2:30 this year, so I don't have to eat them for breakfast!;)

I don't have a link but this is what I found in a State Fair section of the Dallas Morning News last week:

Any day - bring an empty Dr. Pepper can for $5 admission after 5 pm.

Tuesdays - bring one empty DP can for $3 admission. Most rides are 5 coupons on Tuesdays except for extreme rides and Texas Star.

Wednesdays - bring at least three cans of food benefiting area food banks and get in for $2.

Thursdays - free admission for over 60 seniors on Oct 7 and 14. Free admission for anyone who brings a Cinemark ticket stub on Oct 7 and 14. $4 admission for anyone bringing an empty 20 oz bottle of Coke on Oct 7 and 14. Anyone wearing Dickies clothing gets in free on Oct 7.

I haven't been to a state fair since the days of the "I'm with stupid" t-shirts.
Do they still have those?:)

North Carolina had their state fair in October too, and people took their kids out of school to go to the fair there as well.

Like I posted they moved the California State Fair up from the last 2 weeks of August/first week of September to July because attendance was down because kids all go back to school in mid-August now. Kids get out of school in California for a lot of things, but not the state fair.!!

we're planning on going this coming Sunday...haven't missed a year in as long as I can remember.
Gotta get some fried guacamole(seriously yum!). Some nice cold rootbeer too. We just love to get out of town and walk around and see everything.

regarding the poster who was surprised they took kids out of school to go: our school went just about every year when I was growing up, it was a big fun field trip. (granted I always still went with my family as well, it is tradition!) We try like mad to avoid football game days...you can't do anything(even walk) it is so crowded.
