State Fair of Texas - Anyone going?

we're planning on going this coming Sunday...haven't missed a year in as long as I can remember.
Gotta get some fried guacamole(seriously yum!). Some nice cold rootbeer too. We just love to get out of town and walk around and see everything.

regarding the poster who was surprised they took kids out of school to go: our school went just about every year when I was growing up, it was a big fun field trip. (granted I always still went with my family as well, it is tradition!) We try like mad to avoid football game days...you can't do anything(even walk) it is so crowded.

Fried guacamole? Yum! I'll have to try to find that. Where have you usually found it?

When hubby and I were dating umpteen years ago, we used to go on Friday nights. We always had a blast. Then when the kids were born, we would go on Saturday mornings. Once they started school, we always went on Wednesdays because that was the designated day for our school district.

Just lurking as I'm too far to attend -- however,

fried oreos are the BEST!!! They are seriously a piece of heaven.

Have fun guys.

Thank heavens they sell Texas State Fair Corny Dogs in the stores. I won't buy any other brand. :thumbsup2 We've never taken DD. I'd love for her to see Big Tex.

You should take her! The corny dogs taste better at the fair.

I would go if I could get a day off during the week. It's too crowded and expensive on the weekend.

I love the car show and the corn dogs!

looks like the stand has moved this year(it used to be way in the back corner of the midway) to just behind the main food building near the Cotton Bowl. It is from Weiss Enterprises.

btw...here's some pics:

Thanks! I'll see if I can find it. Looks scrumptious! I love guacamole!

Everyone at work says we should go to the fair. We might go, but I'm not really a fair person.

We went to the Fair today. Parking is $15. We were able to get a fairly close parking spot. Today was also canned food day so with three cans of food each, we got in for $2 a piece.

The Chevy test drive is back. There are Chevys all over the place. At the car exhibt we picked out what cars we'd consider if we were looking. My picks were the Nisson Rogue, Ford Edge and Toyota Scion XB. Those are the only ones of that type that my DH (who is 6'4") fits comfortably in. Honda and Kia were not represented. We also looked at four door trucks. We're pretty sure that DH will be getting one in the next year as a business write off, either Chevy or Ford.

The State Fair has lots of goods for sale this year, lots of places for vendors, more than I've ever seen. We actually made it into the Food and Fiber building in time for taste testing. We got to sample peanut brittle, cheese quesadillas and barbeque. There were other spots to stop too but we chose not to.

We got to see one show, the dog show. It was okay, not what I remembered it to be. But I'm sure all the little kids liked it.

We had our caricatures made. It's a hoot! We've never done that before.

And we tried the State Fair fried food winner, fried Frito Pie. It tastes like the frozen mexican dinners that I used to eat as a kid. And I did get the fried guacamole that Shyvioletisme recommended. It was good but I prefer my guacamole cold and with chips. But it was fun doing a couple of taste tests. I've never done that before either.

I also got my standard peanut covered caramel apple and ice cold root beer.

I've also found out that I can't walk around like I used too without a break here and there. Guess I'm getting old.

The weather was good, high in the middle 80's. Crowds were light. All in all a really good day!

I have a goal with a friend to someday go to the Texas State Fair & Schliterban(sp?)Water Park. Everybody have a great time.

I make a point to go about once every 10 years, just to remind myself why I don't go :rotfl: The State Fair is not my thing. I went last year because I had tickets to Mary Poppins which got me into the fair for free. We went a couple of hours early and that was plenty for another 10 years.
