Starwood Question

Does anyone know how you go about joining the
Starwood Preferred Club?
I believe that I saw that you can join for free, but how do you go about doing that? Can it be done before my trip or do you have to do it in person?

Just go to Starwood.com and it will show you how to become a member. They will give you a # that you use for reservations, etc. and will mail you a card in a few days.
