Sanas uses algorithms to make voices sound whiter. The example on the company’s website removes a man’s noticeable Indian accent and turns it into something robotic and uncanny — and, yes, white.
Sarim says accents are a problem because “they cause bias.” Bias does not work this way, of course; it’s not the object of the bias that causes it to exist. Removing the object of that bias — an accent, in this case — doesn’t do anything to rid the world of that bias. It simply sweeps it aside in the name of peaceful conversation.
But you don’t even need to speak with Sarim directly to understand where Sanas’s mission veers off course. Here’s where it happens: right at the start. Sanas’s website says the software is “creating a more connected, friendly, and empathetic world by revolutionizing how we communicate.” Sanas is doing none of these things; it’s just masking your identity.

Not sure what to think of it. I really don't have an issue if it's a call center or even a recruiter who is in South Asia or the Philippines who sounds like it. I really don't like when they try something as facile as just trying to "sound American" or using a fake name. My big issue is that they don't exactly speak the same language, using a form of English that includes terms such as "revert me" (respond to me) or "email ID" (for email address), and no amount of accent modification software is going to fix that. Or will it?

I do remember receiving a call from someone in India about a job in the US. He didn't try to hide his name. His accent was clearly Indian without any attempt to hide it. There might have even been a bit of static from the VoIP line being half a world away. However, what he had practiced wasn't faking an accent but learning American English grammar. He acknowledged that he was based in India and had never been to the United States, but he sounded a lot like my colleagues from South Asia who had been in the United States for years. I thanked him for not trying to insult my intelligence by doing his homework and doing the things that mattered rather than the things that were superficial (i.e. trying to hide an accent that was still understandable).

:crazy2:Who comes up with this stuff and how old world is the thinking in play? Now the mysterious they that do the declaring of intent (who are apparently supposed to be above reproach) have decided to spin reality so that bigotry is the root of the enmity? It couldn't possibly be that people are generally PO'd that all the US jobs moved overseas leaving us with the 08 crash and hoards of homeless who don't have access to the low minimum wage jobs that were moved away for the slave labor in places without labor laws? Couldn't possibly be that these businesses intentionally put American's on the phone with International slave labor whose job it is to put consumers in pointless black holes for hours on end until we get mysteriously disconnected or hang up in annoyance. The accents aren't the problem and the people with accents aren't the problem, businesses practices are the problem.

This is a fascinating (and admittedly horrifying) application of the technology. I just gave a lecture to students about deepfakes and they were fascinated. I might just have to publish something about this.

Most attempts at AI I have seen/heard so far seem amateurish and phony. If the voice sounds like you are talking to a robot not sure what that will accomplish regardless of what voice they are trying to mimic. I just hangup on anyone calling with some sales pitch regardless of how the person sounds. Do they think people will listen longer based on the type of voice?

Its not all that new. I did outsourcing for a big tech company and had to pretend I was on the west coast.
We would have 2 feet of snow outside and I had to say it was raining etc..
Its a big hassle, so I like that they are more upfront now.

It is just an evolution from that.

I have no real issue with it other than it just makes it easier to outsource and take US jobs off shore.
It wont be that long before non-english speakers can be instantly translated to English and back or any other language.

Ive already seen demos of such devices.
One I had seen on you tube the guy had been going to the same stall in a food court all the time in Thailand and ordering the same thing every day for a long time day and really could not communicate with the women in the place.
With this device he was able to talk to her for the first time, find out that the kid sitting at the table everyday was her grandkid and get a recommendation on what he should eat. Was very impressive.
In additon he tried it with a bi lingal women and she was very impressed with it.
There is still a lot of work to do before that is the babel fish - but its not that far off.

Now if it can help me understand a Tipperary accent or Glasgow accent that would be pretty good. ;)

I love accents and hate the idea that they are somehow bad or need to be removed. It is a part of what makes a person unique. I feel like they are removing some of the humanity from the human, as well as their dignity. I don’t want someone to feel like they are less than someone else due to nothing more than an accent.

I do see a place for total translation of one language to another in business and tourism. However, nothing will replace someone putting in the effort to learn the language of the country they plan to visit or do business with. It feels like it is good manners and a sign of respect to acknowledge each other’s language and culture. I say this as I sit here listening to my French lessons in the hope that one day I can go to Disneyland Paris. While I could probably get by without speaking any French, especially with today’s technology, I feel that it would be rude not to make the effort.

I do like accents, but I have people I meet from parts of Ireland and Scotland and even after 30 years I don't know half of what they are saying. I find Tipperary and Glasgow especially difficult even after all that time.
Part of it is they talk very fast, even family born and raised that have lived there all their lives have issues with them.
Maybe if we saw them every day and not just a few days once or twice a year, IDK.
In Ireland there are a lot of accents - in Dublin alone there are several. I've been told its only two, but I think it more.

Most of Europe you can get by pretty well not speaking the language.
They do appreciate your efforts for the most part and will usually just respond in English.
A problem if you want to practice your language skills.
Many of them speak three or four languages - I sort of speak one..
My non English language skills are almost non existent so I'm looking at these devices - but probably need it more for getting in an Uber in the Florida than travel in the EU.

France was a bit tougher back in 98 though - even if you tried to speak French and they obviously spoke English they would make you struggle through it.
At the end if it they would be like Thanks have a nice day - in perfect English - just for the cherry on top. That happened getting a ticket for the train to Euro Disney.

Now with the EU it seems to be much less of an issue unless you get out into rural areas and deal with older folks.

I can speak with a mid Atlantic accent when the mood hits. Made my summer employer at Time Life books very happy that I was selling their product without a New “Yawk” accent.

Mixed feelings. I honestly hate all things AI but I kinda get why this exists. I've had some calls where I ended up having to ask the person on the other line to speak very slowly because I couldn't understand 90% of what they were saying, I felt awful.

I’ve been in your shoes, and one thing that helped me was invoice financing or factoring. Basically, you can get advances on your outstanding invoices, which gives you the cash flow to keep taking and fulfilling orders without waiting for payments to come in.
Huh? What does this have to do with accent modification software? :rotfl2:

“White?”
What type of “White” accent do you speak of? There are many predominantly White countries all of which have different dialects, languages, etc.
