We are starting our well deserved vacation today. We’ll be going to the Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood (Florida) for one night to see our favorite band, and then off to Tampa the next night to see them again, and then over to the Hard Rock Hotel in Orlando for 3 nights.

This will be our third time going to Universal. We stayed at the Portofino Bay Hotel in October of 2006, and we stayed at the Hard Rock Hotel in March of this year. The PBH is a nicer hotel, but the Hard Rock has a better pool and location so we booked a King suite at the Hard Rock this time.

We arrived about 10:30 A.M. on Thursday morning. We used the valet and the bellman for our bags. There was a King Suite ready on the 2nd floor but we asked for a higher floor with a view. That room was not ready. The nice clerk took our cell number and promised to call us when it was ready. We left our bags with the bell desk and they asked me to leave my laptop with the front desk.

They ask you to go around the side of the front desk where there is a little room with a pass through window. The clerk goes on the other side and you give him your laptop. He places it in a locker and you sign for the key.

We got our Season Passes out of the suitcase and headed over to Islands of Adventure. We passed by Mythos around 11:15. It was empty so we reserved a table for 11:30. We got right in. I had a Strawberry Shortcake frozen drink which was excellent and my wife had an iced tea.

I ordered the BBQ beef sandwich and the small onion soup add on, and my wife ordered the Cobb salad. The food was good. The server was kind of grumpy. The soup came without a soup and when I asked her for a couple of spoons she said “you have a spoon already”. She was referring to the spoon I used for the Strawberry Shortcake. I told her that I wanted 2 clean spoons and she reluctantly complied.

After the quick lunch we went over to Spiderman. The ride was not working properly. The 3-D movies were not coming up. I heard another rider say that it was like that all day. After that we went over to the Jurassic Park ride. That was a lot of fun. It really takes a big drop in the end. We only got a little wet.

Leaving the ride, we got the call from the hotel saying that our room was ready. I mentioned to my wife that it’s great to stay in a place where there really is something to do while waiting for your room to get ready.

Before leaving the park we stopped at guest services and purchased tickets for the night’s HHN. The tickets were only $29.99 because it was Thursday and we already had the day park entry. I also asked for a new pouch for my season pass tickets.

When we got back to the hotel, we got our bags quickly and the bellman brought us up to the room. It was room 6040, a king suite located down the first hall to the left of the elevators. The room was very big. Here are some photos:

The room was very clean, the bed was very comfortable, the TV’s and lighting were cool, and there was plenty of room to stretch out including a nice dining table. There were two separate air conditioning units that worked well and the room had a nice view of the pool.

The only real problem with the room was the bathroom. It was way too small for a suite. The regular king room that we stayed in last time had a nicer bathroom. This bathroom was small, cramped, and awkward as the one door could bust the shower door and the other door could break someone’s knees on the toilet. The shower was tiny like an RV’s and there was only a single sink and no bath tub. The sink area and counter was not marble, or anything nice. I think it was Corian.

My only other minor complaints about the room was that there was no dimmer switches for the lights above the bed, but there were dimmers for other lights. Also there was no end table for the bed. I had to move a table over, and leave a lamp on the floor.

To Be Continued…

looks like room 7100 that i have had before.
totally agree about those small bathrooms.

be sure to lift the bed up and see what pic is on the other side.

After unpacking, we went down to the pool to relax. The Hard Rock pool bar is a cool place to hang out. I had a Creamsicle and my wife had a Rasberry Mojito. The Creamsicle is a frozen ice cream drink with mango. Both drinks were excellent.

The water slide is a lot of fun but should be approached with caution. The first time I went down I scraped my back on the bottom of the pool. I think the water level was a little low. The lifeguard suggested not lying down flat when launching into the pool. Another time I almost flipped over around a fast turn. None of that prevented me from going on numerous times. It’s a lot of fun.

We went back to the room and took a shower, or should I say I took a shower and got ready and then waited an hour for my wife to finish. You guys know what I mean! It was about 5 o’clock and we took the boat over to Citywalk. My wife wanted to check out the Fossil store.

Now might be a good time to talk about the boat. We were so lucky. Almost every time we wanted to go over to the parks or Citywalk, the boat was either just pulling up or was there in minutes. We only walked over to Universal twice during our entire stay. The walk is not bad at all from the Hard Rock but I wouldn’t be walking from the other hotels.

Back at the store, my wife bought a nice watch and purse and it was back to the hotel for a little more relaxation. We decided to purchase the express passes for the night while passing by the concierge desk in the hotel lobby. We got over to the Halloween Horror Nights around 7 P.M. It was not that crowded. I was surprised to see the metal detectors at the entrances. They made us throw away our opened bottles of water.

Once in the park we made a right. We really enjoyed the first two houses we hit: Silver Screams and The Spawning. The wait time was posted at only 10 minutes but we used our express passes anyways. We missed Chucky and went over to Saw, which was good as well.

We were getting hungry but went into Leave it to Cleaver before heading over to Finnegans. Cleaver wasn’t that good, neither was my dinner. The restaurant was empty, except in the bar area where they had the Yankee game on. My wife had the chicken pot pie, which was good. My fish and chips were sopping with oil. I had a few bites of the fish and that was all I could stand. The server was nice. I didn’t feel like complaining. I gave her a good tip.

The next house was Frankentein. The wait times were getting longer and now we could see just how valuable the express passes are. This house wasn’t that good either. We went back to the hotel to relax for a while.

We walked back over for a second round at about 10 o’clock. It had gotten pretty crowded but we had plenty of time to see the houses we missed; Chucky, Dracula, and Wolfman (in order of most enjoyable). The wait times were 70 minutes now. Chucky was probably the best house overall with that spinning tunnel you have to walk through.

As far as the conga line issue, it wasn’t a problem at all for us. I just walked slowly and tried not to look ahead. A couple of times a worker would say move along or something, but I basically ignored them and it worked out great. It was funny because a few times, strangers behind us were hanging onto my shirt!

As far as the smoking on the line issue, there were people smoking on the regular lines and they were packed in tightly. This would have made me uncomfortable. The park should consider adding more no smoking signs and putting up cooling fans in those packed areas.

All in all we had a really good time, but one night was enough for both of us. We saw all the houses and passed on the two shows because we always get bored in those. We passed on the rides because we were going to the parks the next two days. The scare zones were nothing special, but one guy really got us when he jumped out from behind a corner (and said boo). And of course, we added a couple of lighted drink glasses to our collection.

It was about 1 o’clock when we got back to the hotel. I ordered a grilled cheese with bacon and tomato sandwich and fruit instead of fries from room service. It was delivered quickly within 20 minutes. The sandwich was bad but the fruit was good. It was about what I was expecting from late night room service. The bed was very comfortable and the linens and sheets were clean and cozy. We had no problems nodding off and sleeping straight through the night, with our heads filled with recollections of the day, and dreams of the days to come.

End of Day 1

Sounds like a great first day...I agree with you on the slide, I've never come down in the same position twice. (I'm a big kid at heart)

We slept late, until around 11. Realizing we were under-supplied, we decided to make a trip to a local store. I called the valet from the room and our car was there before we got downstairs. Every thing we needed was right down the street and we were back to the hotel in no time. Although the short trip cost me $10 in valet tips, it was well worth it.

We took the boat over and arrived at the Citywalk landing around noon. Once you get off the boat, you have to decide on a walking strategy. If you are going to Universal; turn left and walk up the stairs and over the bridge. If you are going to IOA, turn right and walk along the railing to the lake as far as you can go. Do not walk up any of the first stairways you see. They will only make your walk further.

Arriving at the entrance to the park, I employ my park entry strategy, even though for the second day in a row, the park is deserted. First off, I have to have my ticket before arriving at the park. Buying tickets at the gate is not for me. If I didn’t have a ticket, I would buy them online and use the electronic kiosk where the lines are much shorter.

Secondly, I go all the way to the left when getting near the main gates. I have determined that it is human nature to go to the right when faced with crowded entryways. For some reason, at every concert, every sporting event, and every crowded theme park that I have gone to, the longest lines are always on the right side. Sometimes there are no people at all on the lines all the way to the left.

After having gone to the left, we were at the gates with no lines. It was high noon and blazing hot. We are from Florida so we were prepared for it. We put on sunscreen earlier and brought a couple of bottles of frozen water with us. A nice frozen bottle of water will last a good couple of hours out in that heat.

A few days before we left on our trip, I stuck 8 bottles of water in the freezer. I loaded them in our cooler along with some beer and sodas. I forgot to put the diet cokes and the bottle of rum in. (My wife drinks rum and coke, and I drink beer. I can’t stand rum and coke. I might have made a Freudian slip there.)

We went directly over to Spiderman and had no no wait getting on. This time the ride was working and we had a blast. After that fun we reversed course and enjoyed the shops while exiting the park. I really like the Christmas store. We walked over to Universal via the Hard Rock Café cut through.

Over at Universal, our first ride was Men in Black. That was a lot of fun, but my wife did not want to ride again. She said it was spinning around too much. Of course, when I tried to retrieve the items from the electronic lockers, it would not work. Luckily there was an attendant close by who helped us out right away.

I am not a fan of those fingerprint systems. First off it is very unsanitary. You know how many people use those scanners? Secondly they don’t always work right. My wife always has a problem with hers. They had to use her thumb print!

We needed a drink after all that spinning and shooting, so it was over to Finnegans. It was around 1 PM and the bar was not crowded. I enjoyed a cold Harps Ale and we ordered a Shrimp-scargot appetizer. It was good; a nice small portion of tender shrimp served in an escargot dish with garlic butter and melted cheese on top.

After our pit stop, we had the courage to go on The Mummy ride. Walking right on with no wait, we were happy to have our hotel keys. This is the first time they asked for both keys. On the other rides I only had to show mine.

This is the best ride in the park. There’s nothing like an indoor roller coaster to get your blood pumping. We retrieved our items from the locker without incident. I wonder how many people forget their locker numbers? They must have to get security and check the video tape.

We went back to the hotel and relaxed by the pool the rest of the day. Now we’re talking; drinks, food, shade, nothing to do but sit around. We hung out by the bar and had a chicken satay appetizer which was good, and I had a frozen mudslide to go along with pool slide!

After a shower, we went over to Citywalk for a while. My wife wanted to do more shopping. There is a store that sells really cool candles. We got 2 for $40. When we got back to the hotel we decided to have dinner at the Hotel. We changed into our dress clothes. I brought one pair of dress pants and shoes just in case. It’s good we have a garment bag. There’s nothing worse than having to have to do ironing while on vacation.

First it was down to the Velvet lounge. This is a very nice little comfortable bar. We sat at a little booth and had a drink. After that we went over to the Palm restaurant. It was around 9:30. I asked for a booth and was surprised to be told that we were lucky because there was only one booth left. Sure enough the place was full. Most people were dressed nicely so we were glad we changed.

Entire review of the Palm restaurant and the rest of Day 2 to come…..
