Starlit Hui vs Surf's Up with Chip & Dale?

Not sure there's a great answer here, but... months ago I booked Surf's Up for my 2 boys, ages 6 & 8, for this coming Sunday evening. It runs 5:30-8:30pm, and my husband & I were looking forward to a nice dinner, just the two of us.

According the the latest Daily 'Iwa, the Starlit Hui is scheduled for this Sunday. (I was not expecting Sunday - I've been checking the schedule for months, and it's never on Sunday!) That's the only time during our stay that both the Hui and Surf's Up are offered.

So, do we keep our current plans and miss the luau? Or skip Surf's Up and try to get the kids into Aunty's for dinner on another night, so DH and I can still get out for dinner? Of course I already told the boys about Surf's Up and how much fun it would be, because I didn't want them giving me any grief about being away from us that night!

What would YOU choose?

hmmm that is pretty hard. Could you possibly see if there is another activity that you could get your children to do on another night, book that and then ask them what they want? That way if they choose the Starlit Hui, you still get your date night and if they dont, you still, still get your date night heeheehee!

surf's up would be fun for the kids and gives you two a good, long night out, but the starlit hui is good to learn the cultural aspect of hawaii, albeit on the quick side as it's only 30 minutes long (but you'll want to line up by 6:45 p.m. if you want to get seats closer to the front, so it's really 6:45-8:45 p.m., if you stay for a bit of the post-show dancing with the characters, who only show up for 10-15 minutes). it's a toss up.

so yeah, i agree with @alohamom . see what other options they have for premium activities. starlit hui should run again on tuesday if the weather holds up--but don't count on that as it can rain really quickly.

I would say wait until the night before and confirm on the daily iwa (online is tentative), and if the hui will be that Sunday then go to auntys Sunday morning by 730am at the latest to sign them up for dinner and cancel surfs up. That way you can still have date night and then pick them up right before the show. The show includes characters at the ending dance party, so you can sell your kids on it that way.

If you are planning on doing any kind of luau, skip Starlit Hui. We had a bad experience - lots of waiting in line, hubby got there early & was only about 30 people back - he stepped one foot on the lawn while in line and a CM just blasted him. We were up front - which was also horrible, we got blocked by all the families wanting to take video of their kids up dancing. Don't get me wrong - our then 8-year old was up there every opportunity - we just couldn't see her because of all the people standing/squatting/sitting in front of us - then we'd stand to see her, and everyone behind us would get upset. Our 6-year old son didn't want anything to do with it. We kept getting stepped on too. It was fun for a few minutes - kids did both enjoy the dueling ukuleles - they were fun!. We left feeling like the "personal mats" were only a suggested sitting area.

Surf's Up was by far the favorite activity by our 6 & 8 year old while we were there. Also - the kids had more fun in the freebie Aunty's Hula lesson than dancing at Starlit Hui, it wasn't as rushed or crazy.
