Star Wars Weekend Tips 2012

SWW newbie here...I need to understand celebrity autograph FP's a little better, so I'm looking forward to all of you experts enlightening me!

Not sure that I've grasped the finest details...;)

If we arrive at 5 a.m. (or thereabouts) to get a FP for Ray Park, what is the best strategy if DS wants to meet (most to least) in this order: Dee Bradley Baker, Ray Park, James Arnold Taylor and Ashley Eckstein?

DH would likely only care about Ray Park and I would like to meet Ashley - not necessarily important that we all get a pic with one of them together. I think there will be plenty of opportunity for that at the non-celebrity ones.

I understand there are bands, but say we each stand in line for a different one...can we then interchange the FP's if one of us changes our mind? (are the FP's linked with the bands?)

Also, timing-wise when do they start handing the FP's out? Just trying to determine when the two-hour wait for a second FP might end.

TIA for your responses (can't promise I won't have follow-up questions, though! :lmao:)

Celebrity Fastpass 101

If it's anything like last year you'll be able to get at least one celebrity per person. Perhaps a standby if you wait the prerequisite 2 hrs before obtaining another fast pass and are lucky there are fast passes still available. Your signature assumes there will be 3 of you.

In our case we're a family of four; I and a child was in one line for a celebrity, DH and our other child were in another line. Our kids saw 2 celebrities. My DH and I forfeited our wristbands (slipped them off) and slipped them onto our kids, so the pics were our two kids with 2 celebrities.

If each of you want to see a celebrity and your son is mature enough to stand in line by himself, you could all 3 be in 3 different lines and have 3 different celebrities.

That's for just one SWW day. If you plan more days at SWW you up the ability to get more celebrity meet and greets.

The longest line(most in demand) will be Ray Park, followed by Dee Bradley Baker then the hosts James Taylor and Ashley Eckstein.

The wristbands were placed on the person as a deterrent to those who would join the line later. For instance, one person would sleep overnight and be at the front of the line, then come the next day 20 of the person's closest friends would join him, pushing everyone else back. Fast Passes are limited. So now 20 people who were in line now before those friends showed up may not get a fast pass at all.

Now the wrist bands are placed, say 5-ish AM. Then as the time to get fast passes drew near, only those in line should be wearing wristbands.

Wristbands are also color coordinated, maybe green for Ray Park, yellow for Dee Bradley, so on and so forth.

Finally, you have to be wearing your wristband and have your fast pass in your hand (which designates the time slot you're given) to enter the celebrity's queue area.

Fast Passes will already be made ahead of time and stacked in the CM's hand. So you'll have to check the corner of the fast pass for when it was pulled and just count 2 hrs later for when to get the next fast pass.

I don't remember when fast passes were given out. Once the line starts moving, then it literally becomes "the bull run". And I haven't bothered with trying for more fast passes after this newest method so I haven't checked when they were first pulled.

If Ray will be doing his show again, how do the kids get picked? I'm a huge fan of SW and don't have a Star Wars Shirt, which seems to effect the kids getting chosen :sad2:

My son was in the show last year. How he got chosen was: We attended SWW on the 2nd and 3rd weekends. On the first day we went he saw the kids doing the padawan challenge and decided he wanted to sign up. So I said, OK when we come back next weekend, we'll have to get up early and be here for opening to get in line. He agreed and that Sat we got up and walked to the bus stop to see the HS bus pulling away. Ok, one will be by soon. 30 minutes (and a few complaints to drivers of other park buses who radio'd in for us) another DHS bus comes. By this time it's about 10 minutes to park opening. I told him we were going to miss signing up, did he still want to go. Yes. OK....off to HS we go. Get to the park, walk briskly to the sign up location and ask. I explained to him several times that it was probably too late, but that we'd try. Nice CM told him the shows were already full and he tells her very calmly about how the buses made us late but he wanted to try anyway. That's when she asked him if he would like to be in a different show instead? And did he like Ray Park. He said yes and she gave him a wrist band and told us where to go and what time to be there. He loved it. He has ADHD and gets very nervous in crowds....but being on the stage was so much fun he forgot about being scared.

After he teaches them a couple moves, then the kids are given lightsabers to do it again. At the conclusion....they get to keep them. When they were done my son was the first to walk over, shake Ray Parks hand and say thank you. It was the highlight of his trip. BTW, my son was 11 during this trip. So it's not exclusive to the youngest kids either.

regards

Thanks for the insight, glassslippergirl, and for the FP101, Karpkg! I definitely am understanding how it all works a bit better. Looking forward to putting a good plan together. All part of the fun and the anticipation! Anyone else who has suggestions/advice, thanks in advance. :goodvibes

Thanks for your opinions on Fantasmic! I think DD (2 turning 3) will scope out seats for Fantasmic and eat snacks while DH takes the big kids to the Hoopla. popcorn::

Me and my dad have talked about this strategy for autographs: I get in line for Ray, he gets in line for Dee, then JAT and Ashley are take it or leave it. If we get out FPs around 6:30, is there a chance standby will be avalible for the hosts in about 2 hours? Also, nobody seems to care about Jerome Blake, and I don't too :P

I think we'll likely be splitting up for the FP lines as well...DS also feels the same way about Jerome...not interested at all. I'm kind of grateful, though...just means we'll be able to get to his top two meets in either on Friday or on Sunday, depending how things work out the first day.

karpkg has made me go back and look at my pictures from last year.

And one tip... once the picture/autograph sites shut down (I think around 6pm), you can take your own pictures there. This is where Jedi Micky/Minnie/Donald/Goofy were:

Oooh, Sam Gordon, love the pics.

And yes, there are the background props Star Wars fans can take advantage of. There's the speeder bike by Star Tours, the Boba Fett set that has the shackles for arms and feet located either at the set or nearby, over at the LMA entrance we saw Stormtrooper posters where you can place your head over the body of the Stormtrooper in the middle of 2 others, the scenic sets located in the merchandise tent(I think those are reserved for if it rains and they need to move characters indoors), can anyone think of any others?

Yulilin, your daughter looks very comfortable in her Padme gown costume. My daughter had a white fleece cape of her warrior Padme costume that was off within an hour or two. I ended up carrying it for the rest of the day. :headache:

More info on the celebrities: I'm now looking at Silas Carson for Wknd 3. Here's a couple links:

Pic of his character Jedi Master Ki-Adi Mundi

Lott Dod, another Neimodian.

An interview of him about Star Wars on YouTube. He seems to be a very cool guy. I think I may want to meet him.

The set for Commander Cody was a mock up of a 'Blister Pack' the toys come in....

Picture can be taken either in front or behind the 'Blister Pack'.

OMG, I'm in your picture. The one that says: helping a clone defend the republic. I'm the one with the white t-shirt standing next to the CM in the yellow shirt :goodvibes
All these pictures are awesome, I'm getting excited...

:scared1:  That is too funny. I'm now going thru my pics and seeing if I can spot Sam Gordon's child, and now you....:rotfl:

Another random tip: Here's a magic shot that one should take advantage of while doing SWW. Hunt for a photopass photographer carrying a light saber. Or use your own. This magic shot requires no people in the background. They have to superimpose Darth Vader where people won't be walking through him. It's similar to the one they used to do at the MK, that of you battling Capt. Hook. Here's mine where we did 2 different backgrounds.

The first was taken while we were waiting during Darth Vader's break and the photopass photographer was there.

The second we just caught the photographer walking around and we asked if he could do a magic shot for us.

That is pretty funny--it really is a small world, after all.

Actually, now that I think about it, the real surprise is that you're not in more pictures. ;)

Are you implying that I spend Saturdays and Sundays of SWW at DHS from dawn to dusk?!?!.....oh, yeah I do ;)
One year they had a magic shot with Darth Vader that you could make into a puzzle. My son did that and the year after Dave Prowse came and he signed it for us. Pretty cool stuff.
To the people asking questions about celeb fp's I think everyone have explained it in the best possible way, you might feel that you don't get it 100% but just pick a celeb that you really want and go with them, and then see if there are any standbys left for the other.

what time is the parade during star wars weekend? is there more than one?

how do you sign your children up to walk in the parade?

do they do jedi training on non star wars weekend days at hollywood studios. i think the answer is yes just want to make sure.

Last year the parade was at 12:40pm. Only once a day
For the parade is completely random, CM look for kids that are o=into SW (have a lighsaber, are wearing costumes, seem excited about characters) they usually pick them in the morning around the Star Tours/Sounds Dangerous area
JTA is done every day but during SWW the kids get a special "surprise" at the end ( a toy or a collectable coin)

A couple other notes (mentioned earlier but the thread is getting really long)...
1) The Star Wars parade ends at the Hat Stage, entering just left of the gates... it does not go all the way through past Star Tours. My pictures were taken from the curb just past the shops at the end of Hollywood Blvd.
2) They run two JTA "classes" simultaneously. One is on the JTA stage vs. Vader, the other is on the ground vs. Darth Maul or Ventress. I think they also run twice as many times during the day. I got some decent pictures (using a 200mm zoom lens) of my DS on the stage. If he was on the ground, I'd be perfect. There was a blocked off area for parents of padawans (whoever escorted the child to the "meeting" area.

Oh, even with twice as many kids per class and twice as many classes (4x "normal" day amount), all the slots were gone within 45 minutes of the gates opening. And remember, the gates opened at 8, even though they were published as 9am open. So check back here to find out when they open.

We did it twice when it was at JTA and it was a NIGHTMARE!! Last year we didn't even attempt the hat stage, but watched by the AI screen. It was so peaceful!! :cloud9: Everyone sat, the view was great, hardly any one walked past the screen (although those who did didn't obscure anything since the screen is up so high). If memory serves, we sat down about 45 minutes before the Hoopla was set to begin, to ensure we would be in the front, but even if you wandered over just before it started, you would get a prime seat. (This was a Saturday of Weekend 4).

I REALLY hope they do it this way again this year!!

Also, totally random tip, but one of the best things we ever did was bring a lightsaber and had all the characters sign the "blade" with a black sharpie. We have one from each year that we have gone, hanging in DS's bedroom.

Love the idea of signing the lightsaber. Were there any problems with the characters signing it? I think I read somewhere in the millions of posts that characters will not sign anything on you. Correct? My kiddos will carry a cinch sack. Do you think they'd sign it if it was off their back?

Thanks!

where is the list/link of all the celeb's? I missed it somewhere. TIAprincess:
