Star Wars Land in 2018? Nope! 2019

I hear 2018 being bounced around on the boards as an opening date for Star Wars land, (which seems way optimistic) but I've never heard a date mentioned by Disney. Did I miss an announcement by Disney? Just trying to put my family's vacation budget together for 2018 and trying to decide if we'll be spending time in a national park... or my favorite park.

Progress seems to be moving right along but I'd be surprised if it's open in 2018. Just an uneducated opinion of course though. ;)

Carsland construction took 3 years, and it was built on a parking lot. SW involves rerouting the railroad river, shortening TSI, and demolition of a lot of structures. I'd expect it to take longer, so late 2019 would be close to 4 years.

Most of that is already done. Show building foundations seem to already be in place. They are already building "up." The construction pace has been quite fast.

The first year they've been doing work that wasn't done for Carsland because it was built on a parking lot. They're not done with RR, ROA or TSI yet. The structure for RSR was visible for over 2 years before it opened. It's wishful to think that SW will be done faster than their last major construction project.

Anytime you wonder about Disney, follow the money. They offered Annual Passes on November 17 for 13 months for the price of 12. When I called them because I had activated 3 days before that date, they said that when I renew I could get the 13 month deal. So that means if you bought the AP in Nov '16, renewed for the 13 month deal the following Nov, it would expire at the end of Dec '18. That fact alone tells me StarWars Land won't be open until 2019. There's no way they're offering that great deal to open up their billion dollar property. I expect it in 2019.

FWIW, I asked a CM at the park yesterday about a possible opening date. She said she didn't see it happening anytime in the next two years. Having said that, it's also true that anytime I ask CMs about an opening date, they all seem to guess and I get a different answer.

Local news just announced that Disney is saying 2019. And it will coincide with the release of star wars 9. Is it just me or is this a long time for the park to be under construction?

It definitely seems like a long time to wait! I'm sure that it'll be totally amazing and awesome, though, so the wait will be worth it!

Well, Pandora at AK has taken, what, four years (just announced as opening in late May)? So, no, I don't think three+ is unreasonable for SWL.

  • Cars Land was 3 years from groundbreaking to grand opening (July 2009 to June 2012), the last part of a 5 year overall of the park
  • Pandora was nearly 3-1/2 years from groundbreaking to grand opening (Jan 2014 to May 27, 2017)
2019 would be right on in the ballpark, especially considering they had shorten Tom Sawyer Island, reshape the Rivers of America, move the train tracks, build a trestle, etc.

A guess from me would be DL's SWL to open by that summer with WDW's, which was off to a slower start, coming later in the year. Each would be around 3-1/2 years.

I still think it is long time to have the park under construction and continue to raise prices. Just my opinion. :)

Any guesses as to when in 2019? Thinking Memorial day weekend....

Yep. Considering they switched movie release to May from December, my guess is synergy with SW EP 9 and the debut of SWL. I can't speak to WDW, but at DL, construction is advancing at a very rapid pace. It is astonishing what they have done in just one year. It will definitely be ready in two more.

I hadn't heard the new movies would be coming out in May. Interesting....

Thinking ahead and trying to decide if we "go for it" and visit over the summer of 2019 or visit 2018 and wait until 2020 to visit SWL.

May 24, 2019 is the release date for Ep 9.

I have a feeling WDW SWL won't be finished at the same time. I know Disney originally said they would open simultaneously, but I am skeptical. Either WDW construction will have to REALLY speed up, or DL will have to slow way down. DL is way ahead of WDW at this point. I'm guessing DL opens May 2019 and WDW much later in the year, near Christmas.
