With FD drop, there's quite a few of us in the same, "mad planning" phase. I was wondering when the Star wars desert party dates will open up. Tomorrowland party is already booking for September.
Well, yes, but it's not much of a fireworks show anymore. It's almost entirely projections that you need to have a clear view of the entire Chinese Theater to have the right viewing experience.

Either stake out a spot early or do the dessert party. With the latter, you are escorted by Stormtroopers to a reserved viewing area a few minutes before the show starts.
We were there the week leading up to Easter (level 10 crowded). We sat down in the viewing area (towards the front, center) about 45 minutes before show time and had a perfect view. There were maybe 4 or 5 rows of people standing in front of us during the show, but our view was unobstructed.
It's really just about staking our a spot before the show. I've managed to find a spot 5 min before showtime, BUT I've also failed to get a good spot 45 minutes before showtime. There's a short wall surrounding the best area that's good for sitting if you'd rather not sit on the ground. I'd grab some ice cream, popcorn or, my personal favorite, carrot cake cookie, and plant yourselves in front of the theater at least 30 minutes before.

I was there last night year on opening night and even got mentioned on the "Dis Daily Fix". I feel that any firework show it's safe to arrive 45 minutes prior to get a good spot.
Just hope no parents standing directly in front of you put their kids on their shoulders for the duration of the show.
This happened to me in January at MK. Of course they wait till the show starts and you are packed in like sardines and can't get another spot.
ETA...while I'm griping about obstructed views during shows, do the poor saps behind you a favor during theater shows and remove your giant Mickey ears. Thank you. That is all.
