George Lucas has revealed that Darth Maul would have been one of the main villains of his Star Wars sequel trilogy, had his continuation of the story ever made it to the big screen.

As Screen Rant reports, Reddit user bothanspy89 posted a page from The Star Wars Archives: 1999-2005 book that hit shelves earlier this week, detailing some of the ways that Lucas' Star Wars sequel trilogy would have differed from Disney's version of Episodes VII, VIII, and IX. The excerpt reveals that Darth Maul would have returned as the Big Bad of the galaxy far, far away alongside Darth Talon.

"Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice," Lucas explains the latest Star Wars Archives volume, which covers the making of the prequel trilogy. "She was the new Darth Vader, and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy. Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe because, as the Empire falls, he takes over."

According to the new interview, the trilogy would have started a few years after Return of the Jedi, with Mark Hamill's Luke Skywalker trying to rebuild the Jedi Order "from scratch" and training a future generation of heroes. The three films would have concluded with the late Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia Organa being revealed as the Chosen One.

"By the end of the trilogy, Luke would have rebuilt much of the Jedi, and we would have the renewal of the New Republic, with Leia, Senator Organa, becoming the Supreme Chancellor in charge of everything. So she ended up being the Chosen One," Lucas said, sharing more details about his abandoned plans for the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

I don't understand why the never did a sequel to 'Solo'.
I thought Alden Ehrenreich and Donald Glover were marvellous as Han and Lando, not mention seeing Darth Maul, which promised so much. Such a shame they didn't follow it up.

Because the budget was $275,000,000, and box office take was $392,924,807 - you typically want to double the budget to break even so it was a money loser. The reshoots didn't help as they added to the overall expense. It's unfortunate because it was a really good movie, but it came out at a bad time sandwiched between Dedpool and Avengers. There are rumors though that due to strong responses that they may follow-up with it, but what form that will take is still up in the air - it could be something on Disney+ but there is nothing concrete at this time.

When I was briefly on Twitter last year I had a conversation with Jake Kasdan about 'Solo' and he wanted to do a sequel. It was a shame about the reshoots and, quite frankly, they had the wrong directors initially, but, Ron Howard did a great job.
Oh well, we can only hope that they get it all right if the do decide to make a follow up.

I do agree that they had the wrong people in place at first. Ron Howard has been talking up revisiting it so it's always possible.

This was one of Lucas's many ideas. He also talked about making the sequels about the Whills and midi-chlorians.

Yeah, I mean there's really no telling exactly what he would have done. He's been known to change course in the middle of things too. Some of his story beats did make it into the ST anyway, and some did not. Somehow I doubt a lot of fans would have been any happier with his version - they'd find something to pick at because it's what they really want to do.

Yes, for example, the woman protagonist and Luke being in exile were from George.
