I've been reading through this thread with a fine toothed comb, and here are my thoughts on the episode VIII pushback, as well as the TFA banter:
Personally, for whatever reason it may be: a rewrite, competition, somebody even mentioned that there was the idea all along to switch POTC and SW8 so POTC would be more successful at the box office, etc. I'm glad this happened because a year and a half between episodes is way too short, and only a whopping five months between Star Wars movies is too short, as well. There is enough time to build up the excitement for the next installment. Between the time when Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012 and the release of TFA, those three years were very exciting for the franchise.
I will agree that we probably won't see that same excitement going into Episode VIII from the general public, but your diehards will still flock to the screens because there are a lot of unanswered questions to these new characters that need to be answered. And I hope we do get these answers. I don't expect it to do as well as TFA at the box office on opening weekend. However, after the reviews are out, and if it turns out to be a terrific movie, I'm sure it will continue with success at the box office. I just think that the majority of people will wait to see what the general consensus is before waiting in line for hours to see the movie.
As far as the TFA backlash (being a reboot, ripoff, etc.):
We all are entitled to our own opinions, that's why we're all here on these boards and on these threads. I have TFA gently wedged in right in between the originals and the prequels, which it rightfully should be. Its not as good as the originals, but lets not kid ourselves here, did you really expect it to be?? The original story is the platform for the entire SW community. They're almost in a league of their own and therefore, in my humblest of opinions, I don't think any Star Wars movie will ever be as good as the originals. ROTJ fell a little short from ANH and ESB, but it was a great way to end the story. However, that doesn't mean that I hate TFA. I really liked it, it was a good movie. Some people have used the term "reboot" when referring to the movie. No offense here, not trying to make anybody mad on these boards, but I think they need to go look up the definition of a reboot in a series and then think about what they're saying. If it was a reboot, we would have no Han, Chewie, Leia, Luke, Millennium Falcon, etc...In fact, the entire myth of Luke Skywalker that we see in TFA wouldn't even exist. This is a continuation 30 years later of the original story that a reboot would erase entirely. HOWEVER... with that said, before any of those says throw daggers at me... I completely understand their argument. There are a TON of similarities between TFA and ANH. And I would completely agree with anybody that says its too much like ANH. But what do you expect? These episodes are the story of the Skywalkers. It's more of a family soap opera than it is a space opera. It's a very redundant film series. I can't predict the future, I don't have a magic crystal ball or anything that will foresee what the next movie will be like (otherwise I'd be on an island somewhere sipping mojitos and laughing all the way to the bank), but I think Episode VIII won't have much to do with ESB. Which is a lot of the reason why they're doing a rewrite. TFA took a lot of backlash about it's similarity to ANH, so I think that's something they want to avoid all together..
That's my two cents, take it for what its worth.
