Star Fish on the Windows

I have seen many homes in NE that have dried starfish in the windows. Is it just a decorating thing or is there a meaning to it.

There must be someone who knows the answer. I do not think they are just decorative.

All my family live in New England ... Maine, CT, RI and MA ... and I lived in MA for 20 years until we moved to SoCal in 2008 ... none of them have starfish in their windows. I am going East in Aug ... I think I will see if I notice any.
