Got back Saturday night and my youngest has staph. She has it on her back in two places---she had 2 other spots on her as well on the crease of the leg daiper line and then one on her tummy. They both healed on there own-then on Saturday morning the first spot formed on her back and then last night the second formed. Dr. had to lance drain the spots today and it is STAPH. Be careful--wash hands and sanitize--all the things I thought we were doing.

Staph infections are so incredibly common these days! In fact hospitals are the most common place to contract a staph infection! They are becoming more and more difficult to treat as well.

Ways to protect yourself include;

Never use a public changing table. Even covering it with your own cloth won't protect you as the germs will transfer to the back of the changing pad.
- I always just changed my DDs quickly in an out of the way place or laying in their stroller.

Use toilet seat covers in bathrooms.

Wash hands properly and frequently. Use sanitizing gels when needed.

Just remember that staph infections are common all over. Any public place is fair game. WDW is no exception, nor is it more common there.

2nd this...even with our diligent handwashing initiative at my hospital, it still is very prevalent.

I realize it is everywhere...We know it came from the Orlando area..she was fine before we got into the pool and the next day is when everything started. She already has some skin issues so anything minor with all the heat last week could have turned out this way. I am just glad some healed--I could not imagine us doing that to 4 different spots. It was painful for her and pure torture for me. She is still in pain from the procedure, but hopefully by morning she will be fine.

Our DD picked up staph on our trip back in 2007. It was really bad a required two doses of anitbiotics, 6 months seeing a specialist and a whole new routine at home. She is now very sensitive to soaps, detergents, etc. and has been in remission for 6 months-YAY!- Our ped had some of the lanced (very painful) fluid tested and it was a MRSA strain of staph which is becoming increasingly popular- SCARY!

If your DD starts showing patches of rough, bumpy, reddened skin get her in to a specialist because our DD ended up having a reaction to the staph itself a developed a form of eczema. Our DD is now 4 and after 2 years of fighting this has shown no new patches or boils or infections :woohoo:

Poor baby!
I was going to say the heat probably didn't help matters:sad2:

Staph is everywhere, not just at WDW. Same with flu, swine flu, norovirus, etc, etc.

Sorry about your daughter. Do you mind if I ask where you stayed? We are going from 7/6-7/11 and my daughter has eczema so I would be interested to know where you swam.

My daughter has eczema as well along with other skin issues on her bottom, but at the time this happened she was in pretty good condition. Her bottom always looks like a person whose skin is healing after a burn--it is a different color lighter pink than the rest of her skin. You can always tell where her problem areas are as of this outline.

Anyway--we stayed at Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom Lodge. The place itself was awesome--we are only thinking it was the pool because she was fine before we got in, but as others have said she could have picked it up anywhere there. We do know that she had a severe reaction to huggies swimmers--will never put those on again.

Thank you very much. I know oatmeal baths by Avenno really help my daughter by letting her soak in it a good while and then put a ton of her lotion on.

People are right when they say staph is everywhere..Staph is probably present on each readers body right now to some degree..did she catch it or was she in conditions that made it flourish? you may never know..its important not to pick your NOSE believe it or not..seems like thats where some strains originate. Its also important to keep ANY blemish or sore, even mosquito bites, covered..once your skin has an opening, youre in trouble. As gross as it sounds, lets say a child picked their nose, and then scratched a mosquito bite..a staph infection could occur.
The best advice is DONT FORGET TO SHOWER ON VACATION..purel is good, and I REALLY recommend the chlorox wipes..they're super.;)
Something that is my pet pieve is the handrails. Watch how many people run theyre hands along those handrails sometime..eeeew..

Not to someone who reacts badly to them.

Oh gosh, I feel for you :( My youngest DD is the same way. We are currently fighting a really bad rash on her bottom. It just wont heal and the doctors cant do much else! I hope your DD gets to feeling better really soon

The only thing that has helped us is Arbonne baby lotion. We put on her bottom all the time and it works--this also was the only thing that worked for DS skin issues.
Update: The spots started on Tuesday and on Thurs. she began having nose bleeds as well--we think it was just from the heat and drying out. Well since last Thurs. she has had 4 bad bleeds. While we were at the Dr. on Wed. he said if ti happened again she would need to see her ENT. Well we saw him this morning thinking he was going to catarize the spot. He did not because of the location of the inlfamed area. It is right at the tip of the nostril. Guess what--she now has staph on her nose where it connect to the lip skin. She has not been picking her nose--or we have never seen her do this. Of course it did not show up until late this afternoon. She will not let up near her nose. It looks like an ant bite on the corner next to the bridge. Her back on the other hand looks much better today, but we still have a long way to go.
