What are the difference? We are staying at ASMu Dec 4-15. we picked standard room- can you tell me what is the difference and can I call Disney to see what room I will be in already? Or will I not know until I get there? First time staying onsite and 2nd trip ever! So newbie!

The rooms are basically assigned about 3 days prior to guest arrival. And even then, nothing is etched in stone. You don't have a particular room until you have your room key in hand. So, no, you can't find out what room you're in.
As far as preferred vs standard rooms go, I think Calypso is a preferred building. That is the set of buildings closet to the main building and bus stops. Jazz is next but there are a lot of family suites in there, but it is still standard I think.
Basically? The buildings closest to the food court/bus stop are preferred. Other buildings are considered standard.

Preferred is a category you have to pay for. Preferred means that it s near the food court/bus stop etc. At ASMu I believe that preferred is in the calypso buildings. If you are in country fare its a hike. It's not awful but it's a walk!

At the value resort the preferred rooms are within 500yds of the main building. There is absolutely no difference between a standard and preferred room. This applies to the All Stars and POP....AoA does not have preferred rooms.

The only preferred rooms at Music are in the Calypso buildings.....all other buildings are standard room.

I have stayed at AMU twice and it is the only value I would recommend paying extra for a preferred room.

I agree but I would also include the other All Stars in that. POP you can get a standard room that is almost the same distance as a preferred. We were in building 10 at POP on the 4th floor....the walk from the elevator to our room was exactly the same as to the standard rooms. I was not impressed as I had paid an extra $180.

Preferred rooms are all about their location. They are the closest to the main building and main pool.

Preferred rooms are located closer to the main building with the food court/gift shop/bus transportation. I would definitely pay for one at AsMu. We were in a standard room once and were in the last building farthest away from everything. It was really quite a walk after a long day at the parks.

Agree with this. :thumbsup2 The other AllStars and POP have their main hub built into the middle of oblong resorts, ASMu has it's hub built at the end of an oblong resort. So if you take standard - which I have twice you could end up at the far end, having to walk the length of the resort. We ended up driving to parks and eating after we left and before we returned to the resort on both trips.
