Just when you thought charging to use the restroom on a plane was going too far, Ryan Air are now looking at putting in standing seats on their planes

I do hope this doesn't pass the safety tests, next thing they will have double decker seats

I just saw those in the newspaper!

They're crazy - they look nothing more than those bars that you "perch" on at bus stops.

I'd give it a go if it was just to Paris or something. Dont think I could stick more than hour on them....

I'm curious as to what the safety checking process thing will come up with.

Actually, the most discomfort I have ever had was a result of having to sit in a non-aisle seat, without the option of stretching my legs. I have an arthritic knee that just can't stay bent for that long. Standing is a fantastic option! Of course, it might get tedious on longer flights, but it would be great on short hops.

Edited to add: Now that I look at it, it might be even worse, since it appears that you can't even completely straighten your knees. Keeping them slightly bent and bearing most of your weight on them like that could be excruciating.

Maybe all passangers could just sit on the floor, as I did any # of times when flying in C-123's and C-130's in Vietnam.
No need for seats!! Think of all the $$$ they could save!!!!

Wow interesting. It is amazing what Ryan Air will do to save/make a more money. We used them on our last trip to the UK and I have never seen a company so anal about your luggage and carry-ons.

As long as the "seats" are priced low enough to make it worth it I would do it on a short flight like Paris to Marseilles or Barcelona to Rome. Longer flights though could be an issue.

Before even opening the link I knew it was Ryan air. I flew them from Frankfurt to Treviso and they give a new meaning to bare bones.

Combine the "artist's impression" with treadmill under their feet. They'd have to walk on the treadmill to give energy to keep the plane aloft.

The passengers would be like slave rowers in the old days!

I flew Ryan Air Paris/Glasgow/Paris a few years ago...I think they'd do anything to save a buck - the baggage charge was very high, they charged a certain amount for on-line check-in and even more for airport check in and the price for a refreshment was insane....and I can still remember the Paris airport - we had to travel way out of Paris to Beauvais Airport - it was hot, crowded, under construction and we called it the "Mauvais Airport" (Mauvais = bad, in French)- then when we got to Glasgow, we were actually at the Prestwick airport - which was a long ways from Glasgow. (I guess they get you "partly" to and from where you're going?? I couldn't imagine sitting/standing that way!!!! (and of course the law of gravity would make you have to pay to use the toilet more often???)
I'll stick to Air Canada and Delta if at all possible!!!!

That reminds me of the standing roller coaster at Drayton Manor!

Or have pods like those Japanese hotels, that would actually be pretty comfortable if they were roomy enough (although I expect it would be more like sardines)
