Hi all, (I posted this someplace else first by accident and someone suggested I post it here for more replies.)

In the past few weeks/months I have started having trouble going down stairs. My knee tends to pop or something then locks up and causes a lot of pain. It's not going up any stairs, only down and it's not every time but it very often.

With that in mind I was trying to recall which attractions have stairs (particularly going down) I need to be aware of in advance.

This is what a few folks have helped me put together so far:

  • Splash Mountain
  • BTMRR
  • TSM
  • Indy Speedway
  • Test Track
  • Dinosaur
  • Space Mountain

Can you think of other attractions in WDW with stairs?

Thanks!

I only have time for a quick reply.
Of the attractions you mentioned, two do not have stairs.

Big Thunder Mountain and Test Track have no stairs. The rest all do have stairs.

Test Track has stairs if someone needs to board at an alternate boarding area with a wheelchair for a transfer over the side of the ride car. That boarding area would not be helpful to you because it involves stepping up over the side of the ride car (similar to stepping over the side of the tub and then down into the ride car).

Look at the disABILITIES FAQs thread; in post #6, there is information about Guest Assistance Cards. One of the possible stamps they can put on the card is a to bypass the stairs for those attractions with stairs. You would usually wait in the regular line until you come to the stairs. At that point, there would be a wheelchair bypass which avoids the stairs. That can often involve a longer wait. In the case of TSM, the boarding area is a ramped area that leads to a separate boarding area. If there are people waiting before you, you will have to wait in that line for loading. Only one ride car is loaded there per ride cycle, so if many people are waiting there, you can easily be waiting there for 30 minutes or more.

If you only have the problem with going down stairs, you should be fine in the queue at Splash - I don't remember any steps down there, only up.

The big problem will be stepping down into the ride vehicles, especially at Splash, and Space Mountain, Test Track, Maelstrom and PotC. You have to step pretty far down, once onto the seat and then onto the floor of the vehicle.

I'm trying to remember where else my mom had problems with getting down into the seat. I'll ask her when I talk to her later today!

Have someone in your party step into the vehicle first and then hold your hand, It will make it a lot easier and then someone help you out at the end.

When you get to the park, go to guest services and tell them what you told us. They should be able to help you with the stair issue. Be sure to ask the CMs at the attractions if there are any stairs before you get into the line ( in case you forgot about some ). The idea to have a person in your group get into the ride first to help you down is great.

goofy reply here. When you have problems going down stairs. If you side step and go down sideways. does it help at all? Instead of going down the stairs in a normal manner, you would be using some different muscles and may avoid some of the knee problem... A therapist mentioned this to me recently, i have issues going down stairs.. at some times.

have you tried a neoprene brace, or a chopat type brace to help keep things in the correct place?
