St Pete beaches

I have seen some discussions on here about the beaches at St. Pete. Can anyone elaborate? Where is the best beach in the area? We are going in February, looking for a day trip. Probably won't swim depending on the weather, but what beach would be good to go to for scenery/relaxation/shells? We have a 5 year old if that helps.

We stayed on Sand Key at the Sheraton this past summer and loved it. Very clean and quiet. Lots of shells. No rip currents or rough surf like the east coast.
