Ok, I know you're supposed to have corned beef & cabbage, but exactly how does one make it? What else are you "supposed" to have.

I've made corned beef plenty of times, but I never got into the cabbage. Am I missing something?

My mom always boiled the cabbage and served it with vinegar (not my favorite side dish!), and she always served boiled potatoes as well. Come to think of it, I think she boiled the corned beef, too! I've done corned beef (a brisket) in the crockpot before, and I like it better that way. You could add the potatoes to the crockpot, too, but I don't think adding the cabbage would be a good idea.

and potatoes.......so what I do is start the corned beef in a big big big ........turkey pan.....that is my biggest one.....and keep adding water......I like to do it a few hours......then I add the rutabagas and carrots......then the cabbage cut in quarters and finally about 45 minutes before I want to put it on the table........THE potatoes........I also love to have a day when I can open the windows and let the stink out......some how cabbage and turnips and the rest of it smell the house up good........I love this meal and we use vinegar too......

Just throw the corned beef in the crockpot with two cans of Guinness - cook for 8 - 12 hours. Add the cabbage the last hour. Boil potatoes & carrots separately (the beer makes the potatoes bitter!) This is my brother's recipe - haven't tried it yet - but will on Sunday!
