Can any of you give recommendations for places to stay, things we must do, and places to eat in St. Augustine? We've never been. Thanks!:goodvibes

St. Augustine is one of my favorate places. We love the St. Francis Inn, a 200 year old bed & breakfast (we've stayed in every room).

There are dozens of threads about St. Augustine around here - they pop up about once a month or so. I'm sure you could find some in the search or using Google to search the boards. Lots of good writeups already out there. (Don't have time to post more right now, but I've responded to plenty of the others with my thoughts.)

Go out to Marineland, it's across the bridge and down A1A a bit. You can visit with the dolphins and even go in the tank with them if that's your thing.

There is the Casa Monica hotel. I have never stayed there personally. Your best bet is to go trip advisor and do a search.

Thanks guys! I just wanted some quick ideas so that I could begin my search! Outlets? I think so!!

We stayed at St. George Inn. Right in the heart of old town across from the fort.

We love that B&B,make sure you spend a night in Lily's room!!:thumbsup2

Also, check out the trip advisor boards for St. Augustine. Very good information.

We stayed in a wonderful B&B in August - At Journey's End. We had the safari room and it was lovely, with a private verandah. And the guys who run it are so sweet and helpful, giving us loads of tips on things to see and places to visit. Just to let you know, Monday nights are pretty much dead in St Augustine - everything closed around 9pm when we were there (it is their equivalent of a Sunday apparently).

ETA, we bought tickets to the green trolley tour and hopped on/off to suit. We visited the Old Jail - well worth a look - and took the tour which was informative and very amusing. We also visited the Castillo San Marco and, while not my cup of tea, my DH who lives history thought it was great. We also visited the St Augustine lighthouse, which was really good. It's quite a climb to the top but well worth it for the view :thumbsup2

We plan to go back next year and spend at least a couple of days there (1 was not enough). It is a lovely place. I can highly recommend the lemon drop martini at Scarlett O'Haras too :drinking1

I'm no help with where to stay, I have Grandma down there. :rotfl:

But for food Barnacle Bill's and Florida Kracker on St. George Street.
And there's the Disney Park outlet too!

My favorite touristy things
  • The Alligator Farm
  • Ripley's
  • The Lightner Museum
  • The Foutain of Youth
  • And of course the Lighthouse

And the Trolley's are so worth it if you don't know your way around the city.

Two words. Gucci Outlet.:cool1::rotfl2:

There are 2 outlet malls right near each other and one more across the highway, if I remember correctly. Disney outlet is in the indoor outlet mall by the 2nd outdoor mall.

Check out the fort while you're there. Quite a bit of history, and beautiful views.

Ripley's believe it or not is pretty awesome.

We like the mexican restaurant across from the fort.

Gucci AND Disney??? I'm so there! I've heard about the Mexican restaurant!

We love St. Augustine! I consider it my 2nd home!

We go there nearly every summer, &, in fact, will be there this June!

Some of our favorite places to eat -

Saltwater Cowboy's (off of A1A - on St. Augustine Beach)
the Oasis (on A1A - on St. Augustine Beach)
Creekside (off of the main road that runs behind St. Augustine, in the more contemporary section of St. Augustine)
Spanish Bakery (downtown, on St. George Street)
Barnacle Bill's (the one downtown, not the beachside one)
the Columbian (downtown, on St. George Street)

This year, we're trying Cap's on the Water & Mangoo's Mangoos for the 1st time.

Some of our favorite things to do -

Castillo de San Marcos
the Lighthouse
Alligator Farm
Spanish Quarter Museum
shopping & strolling on St. George Street & all the little side streets
the original Ghostly Haunted Tours
Scenic Cruise on the bay
Ripley's
the Lightner Museum - if you like Victorian antiques

The Fountain of Youth & the Old Jail are also good for first-timers - we're taking our kids to the Fountain of Youth this year since it goes along w/ some of the things they learned in school.

Whetstone Chocolate Factory offers free tours w/ a free piece of chocolate.

The gardens of Nombre de Dios (where the tall cross is) are also free to tour.

We normally stay in a condo on the beach. We love Coquina Condos, but, this year, we're taking my parents. We had to find a 3 bedroom condo, so we're staying at Colony Reef. We also really like the Hampton Inn on the beach - this is where we stay we're stopping in St. Augustine on our way to or on our way back from WDW.

Have fun!!!

MARINELAND!!!!!!!!! Also, if you like ghost tours, the one on the bus is FANTASTIC. They did a great job. I wish we could have had more time to visit some of the more historical type places like the jail during the day. Saw it on the tour but it wasn't the same. The old tyme pharmacy is interesting to take a look in (also free to stop in). The old school house was also interesting to read the plaques and see how they were set-up. Any of the 'old' stuff was interesting for me but I LOVE history type places as well. That's all I remember off the top of my head. It's been a couple of years since we've been.

Oh, Harry's restaurant is supposed to be haunted which is why we went. The food was wonderful and we sat outside looking out over the water. Since it was dinnertime, it was dark which made it nice and romantic. :)

WOW!!! We are planning to stop by for a couple of days after WDW to "unwind"! It sounds like there are SO many wonderful things to do here! I'm assuming it won't be as crowded as WDW! :rotfl: I've heard it's a beautiful place.:goodvibes
