SSR...wish I'd known about the sleeper sofa!

Just returned from our first stay at SSR in a studio with the sleeper sofa. It was the most uncomfortable bed any of us have ever slept on. And I said *any of us* because we all had to take a turn on this rock to spread the discomfort equally among the family! The top section felt like a wooden board, while the middle and bottom section were mushy soft. It created this odd sensation where your upper body felt higher than your hips and legs. It was finally determined the only way it would actually be possible to get some sleep was to put our head at the foot of the bed and sleep somewhat diagonally (completely avoiding the top section), with our feet resting on the ottoman, which we shoved between the bed and the patio door. Thank goodness there were only three of us and just one person had to take the sleeper sofa at a time.

We also had no comforter/duvet on either bed, just a sheet and thin blanket -- it that the norm now? It was pretty cold in the room and when the heat came on it created a draft right on our faces. Only other issue was the mid-stay trash and towel service. Someone came in the room while we were out and emptied the trash, but did not replace the towels. We had to ask housekeeping to exchange them for us.

Although this was not the most pleasant stay we've ever had, it was just a small bump in the road of a DVC membership that we love and wouldn't trade for anything in the world and just reinforced once more why OKW was the perfect home resort for us -- real beds!!! lol

Wow! That's a shame. I wonder what kind of sleeper sofas they have at SSR. A few years ago, we used the sleeper sofa at either OKW or BCV (I don't remember which) and we were so impressed that we looked up the brand and bought the same one when we got home. I'm pretty sure that in the 1 BRs, the heavier linens are in the closet. Unfortunately, "heavy" is all relative-last year, my DH was still cold!

I honestly don't know what brand it was. We've stayed in other DVC properties that also utilized sleeper sofas and never encountered this problem. On the bright side, it was a great bonding experience for us and gave us something to laugh about later (although it didn't seem so funny at the time!).

I have not found a comfortable sleeper sofa at DVC yet. I have slept on them at AKV - Jambo, SSR, BLT and BCV. I have heard that they have those "egg crate" mattress toppers available but I haven't asked for one yet. I have even tried just sleeping on the cushions from the sofa but nothing has helped. I feel your pain!

I didn't know that anyone made a comfortable bed in a sofa. Was your trash removal part of the now daily room inspection/trash service?

We just sleep on the sofa as a bed, never actually making it into a bed if we stay in a studio. We have tried the sofa beds as actual beds over the years, and none were ever comfortable. At any resort.

On the flip side, my boys always find the sleeper chair comfy :)

Maybe it was part of a new daily service, but they only emptied the trash one time. (?)

There are sofa beds that have Tempurpedic Mattresses in them! They are like $5000 each, but they are AMAZING!

Kidani used to have wonderful, thick sleeper sofas. Unfortunately with this last softgoods update they replaced them with thin mattresses. Why do they always take a step backwards when doing the updates?

The old style with the bar underneath tended to be more comfortable than the three section pad on the platform that they use now.

When staying anywhere other than my home resort, OKW, I plan on bringing a mattress topper for the sofa beds. Hopefully that might at least help a little.

We used the sofa at SSR a few weeks ago and thought it was comfy. It was the 3 pad memory foam kind...

Cost, perhaps?

That's the same as all of them. Three section pad on a platform. Not that comfortable.

We had a dedicated 2 bedroom unit this last stay. The person who needed to sleep on the pull out has a vertebrae or two out of alignment. The mattress absolutely killed her back to the point of bruising and those tears of misery the next morning.

We did have one more queen bed available, but the other room had my older daughter and her fiance so sharing the room would have been awkward. When I called housekeeping to ask about toppers (bring 2 or 3) the manager herself came to the room and it was decided to pop the extra mattress from the studio portion onto the living room pullout. She called a maintenance man and they did it for us. Couldn't have worked out better. We put the mattress back afterward and stripped all the beds of linens as we usually do.

That's awesome they were able to come up with a solution for you! We had a similar situation because my son has one hip that is higher than the other and it was already aggravated from so much walking. The sleeper sofa made the situation 100 x's worse. :(
