SSR-Why so many resales?

I've been noticing a lot of SSR resales. Any reason why? They're running or were running a special to close out the DVC and I've noticed a ton of resales. It kind of concerns me to buy in with all the resales. Is it because AKV is out and people are trying to sell out and buy in to AKV?

Wow! I guess I should have searched for these. The size of SSR was a concern of mine and it appears others have the same concern. With that in mind, maybe we'll look at AKV instead. Prices are very similar and AKV has the decor I enjoy (We love WL) and is new also. I'm not real keen on how far away AKV is from the other parks, but I'll manage...

Yeah we had a hard decision to make when buying into DVC. I think the best advice is buy where you would want to stay most!

If you're staying at Animal Kingdom Villas, not only should you love animals, you should love long waits for the crowded buses everywhere you go. :lmao:

I have to disagree, based on my experience. We had no issues with the bus situation in our 5 days at AKV. We really enjoyed using the Disney transportation system.

We were there for 20 days this summer and for the most part, the waits were good. But there were 6 or 7 times that it was not good - wait times longer, too many people to fit on the bus. We saw 2 charter busses pick up the Pop Century croud at closing time at DHS! They didn't ever do that for us.

Love AKV but only complaint is it is so far from the other parks. We never had a bus problem, love BOMA, the savanna, etc.

We bought SSR in May 2004 as we decided that DVC was for us. The only resort that Disney was selling was SSR. We did not really know much about the resale route, but, being Canadian, we wanted to buy directly from Disney just in case there was an issue. We were a young family with a baby, and so this was a big purchase for us - we love SSR and visited Downtown Disney often.

Fast forward to 4 years later - we now have a new baby (2 Disney sweeties in our family now) and we have realized that SSR just doesn't work for us at this stage in our lives. We regularly travel to WDW for 2 weeks each July when it is very hot and so our kids don't want to be continually strapped into car seats and driven to parks, deal with parking lot trams and then wait in line as is the case if staying at SSR. Our just turned 5 year old princess who is on trip #7, is very specific about how her 'castle' vacations are to go. So, we bought at AKV as we love that resort as well - great pool, activities and of course, animals! There is still the transportation issue though, as there is no direct transportation (we don't do Disney buses as we have our own car = car seats!) to the parks from this resort either.

Now, we would love to sell almost all of our SSR contract too as we can't see ourselves staying there again until kids are much older. We love SSR, and have had wonderul stays there, but it just doesn't fit our family best at this time. We just stayed in Epcot Area, and we realize that this is where we need to be as we have access to 3 parks from there (we also would love to own at BLT, but we can't afford an add-on at this time). The thought of selling SSR and buying BCV resale is very scary to us, so we are using our SSR contract to hopefully secure a BCV at 7 months out as we have no other choice, but if the resale process wasn't so intimidating, we would love to sell most of our SSR contract as well.

This could be why there are so many SSR resales - it was the only way to get us in as DVC members and at the time with 1 baby, we really thought it would work for best for us. Now with 2 babes, we realize it does not, but we can't afford another add-on at this time, so we are making due with what we have.

We bought SSR in Jun '05 and have not regretted it at all. Added on AKV last year and have stayed there twice now.

Must say the bus situation at AKV is a bit slower, longer, more crowded at times compared to other resorts. BUT, my theory is that whatever place we are coming/going to has the longest wait, while all others seem to come and go much quicker.!!

As for SSR, we love it there. The wide open space, quiet walkways, and lack of the crowds like at POP or some of the others. SO all you young families with little ones, its ok to sell your SSR points and buy more at AKV or villas closer to the parks! For us, we like our quiet time!

We bought at SSR and have no regrets whatsoever. You should definately buy where you would want to stay. We usually go in the off season, so we will continue to try different DVC resorts for the fun of it. However, our last trip was to SSR and the resort has a wonderful peaceful feel to it. I fell in love with it during our initial walk-through and that view hasn't changes. That being said, it is a large property and I'm sure all of the properties have a fair amount of resales since people's circumstances and economics change.

This may be far fetched, but I have a hunch that there was a fair subset of people who looked at the extra free points (developers points?) that were given with a purchase at one point and thought they might buy in, use the "free" points and maybe the 1st year or 2 , and sell - basically having had a free vacation out of the deal. Seems like an awfully complicated way to get a vacation, but I recall more that a couple of messages on these Boards that basically gave that scenario (and an assumption that the resale price would be higher by now) with a "can we do this" message.

Hello,
I agree with the others, purchase where you like and would most see yourself staying. BUT, the one thing everyone here neglected to state...once the Kandi section of the AKV is completed it will be the 3rd largest. Only SSR and OKW will be larger, and therefore the longer bus lines and the furthest location away from the park along with its size will be a deterent. The smaller resorts like BCV and WLV need home resort advantage, but the larger resorts do not as most can be had at the 7mth mark. AKV is a wonderful resort but it will be larger and more remote than any other of the smaller resorts. Buy where you like!

I promise I'm not being snarky but I'm not sure I understand why exactly you want to not use SSR from what you've posted. Your children don't want to be far away from the parks so you are staying even farther away from the parks at AKV? Maybe I misunderstood? There is no monorail access from any DVC resort at the moment and only BCV/Boardwalk? have a foot path access to Epcot and possible DHS if you want to make that walk (also boat access).

You can take the Disney buses into the parks from the resorts. I was a bit confused on why you don't use them as that would be nicer and more comfortable for the kids, possibly?

Just mostly curious about your post as I think I'm maybe missing something. LOL

I think you hit the nail on the head Mikesmom. :thumbsup2

I see quite a few AKV resales also.

Let me further explain:

SSR - We have enjoyed all of our stays at SSR, but with 2 young children now, we realize that being closer to the parks is essential. Not only closer to parks, but being able to take monorail or ferry to the parks like Epcot Resort Area. In Epcot Resort Area you have access to 3 parks: MK, Studios and Epcot by walking, ferry boat or monorail. At our recent stay at Yacht Club, we parked our car for 3.5 days and didn't use it once, yet we visited all 3 of the above-mentioned parks! Love that!

AKV - We bought at AKV because we love the resort. We usually stay at least at 2 different resorts during a stay; therefore, we like AKV for a few days (although in May we stayed for 8 days) - pool, crafts/activities, quick access to AK. We won't visit the other parks much if at all while at AKV. We totally realize there is no transportation here besides busess, but this isn't an issue since we have our car. No matter what resort we stay at, there is no direct monorail or ferry access to AKV, so that's not an issue. Sorry I didn't explain this further.

Basically for us, staying at both SSR and AKV requires driving in our car each day to parks,so we need to minimize this as during the oppressive Orlando summer (when we normally travel), getting in and out cars and traipsing through long parking lots is just not conducive for us any longer. We don't use Disney buses as we can't use our car seats, so no go there!

At this point, like I said, we can't see staying at SSR except for maybe a couple of non-park days, but with 5 yr old and 1 yr old park lovers, non-park days aren't really in the cards for quite a few years - LOL! My hubby and I don't get any time to ourselves, but if we did, we would certainly stay at SSR for a romantic weekend. :thumbsup2 So, for our next trip, we are going to reserve AKV for 3 days, and then hopefully try and get Beach Club Villas for the other 7 days. Love Stormalong Bay and walking access to Epcot - we spend the most time at Epcot and MK, so a quick hop on monorail from Epcot and we are at MK!

Hopefully, this explains things further - when we purchased SSR, we only had one child (10 month old), now 4 years later, we have 2 kids with different needs.

Happy DVCing to all, Tiger :)

Makes much more sense! :thumbsup2 Thanks for elaborating! :goodvibes

Not sure why you had to buy AKV to stay there in July. You should have no trouble getting AKV reservations at the 7 month mark using SSR points. SSR points have the lowest annual dues.

I didn't say we added on in order to secure AKV ressies. We added on because we had a second child - a child we didn't think we were going to be able to have. With 2 kids, we now stay in 1 beds, which require more points, so we added on at AKV as we like it there very much! We had never stayed in the Epcot Resort Area before, and so we didn't realize how awesome it was. We might not have done our add-on at AKV and gone for BCV had we stayed there last year.

Everything happens for a reason - no worries as we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy regular WDW vacations. I just wanted to give some other reasons as to why so many resales - family needs being a big one for us!
