Ssr v okw

The one thing that would put me off Old Key West is the size of the place, from looking at the resort from overhead on 'Live maps' you can see the resort is massive and spread out over a huge area.
You could have to drive to get to the hub of the resort.

this is such an interesting thread, I keep thinking I've made my mind up and then I read something which goes and changes it again ;) definitely hoping to make our booking by the end of the month :goodvibes

It's about a 10 minute walk from the furthest parts of OKW to Hospitality House.

Certainly when building the first DVC resort, OKW, they didn't 'pack 'em in' like they did with subsequent resorts ;). Believe me, you read just as many comments about the walking distances at SSR (a larger resort) on the main DVC boards as you do about OKW - especially from Carousel section. The latest one to gripe about (for distance to walk) is Kidani at AKL :)

For a 2 bedroom villa which one do people recommend??

For me it would be Old Key West everytime :goodvibes The 2 bed (and 1 bed) villas are SO spacious, plus you get a huge balcony with a full size table and four chairs :thumbsup2 But some people prefer the more "sophisticated" decor of SSR - so look at some pics and go with whichever floats your boat!

I disliked SSR from the first time I saw it and couldn't understand the appeal but I love OKW. Maybe they just appeal to different types of folks.

I'm the same! I've tried to like it, and can appreciate that it's an attractive resort - but it just does nothing for me!!

That would be me too - and I've walked around SSR many times, and dined there. Pretty enough, but not for me - I like to feel I am in Florida, complete with palm trees and lush native plants and not in upstate New York ;) No palm trees at SSR :sad2:

Thanks. I must admit that some of the pics of OKW don't make it look too appealing!! Has it been renovated since these were taken, for example?

Looks a bit dated IMHO....

I think it looks very pretty. Thanks for the extra info everyone, I'm still swaying backwards & forwards.

No that is the current decor which, I agree, is not the most up to date on property - but I (personally) find it perfectly pleasant when I'm there. The best thing about the OKW 1 and 2 bedroom villas is the main room with the sitting area and kitchen. It's very spacious, light and airy - and the decor is actually quite nice! ;)

But if you're not keen on the pictures of OKW, then try SSR. Staying in any DVC 2 bedroom villa is great :thumbsup2

I really can't decide which to go for. I definitely prefer the decor of SSR (and the furnishings look nicer/higher quality, too). The fact it's newer is obviously a big bonus as well. But, on the other hand, I much prefer the general "theme" of OKW - we visited before and I loved the laid-back atmosphere and the natural setting, and remember sitting on the boat to DTD thinking that the villas overlooking the river must be pretty nice to stay in (are these few and far between/can you request them especially?). SSR's theme doesn't really appeal all that much, and since the villas are smaller, too.....but then I try and justify going for SSR based on the fact it costs more DVC "points" so, therefore, must be better "value" since OKW and SSR cost the same!......

Such a difficult choice!

Can anyone tell me what the quiet pools are like at OKW? Do there have a beach like the CBR?

The villas overlooking the waterway to DD are 45, 46 and 55 and can be requested (but that doesn't mean you will get one of course ;))

The reason OKW points are less is that it was the first DVC resort by 4 years (BWV and VB were next) and they upped the points after that because they could. In fact, this point difference for SSR v OKW on the main boards is often criticised as the resorts are similar and Disney charges the same amount for SSR and OKW via CRO.

No there is no beach. There are 3 Community pools (I think they have dropped the 'quiet' tag since it gave the wrong impression) the largest of which is at Turtle Pond and has a snack bar. All three have hot tubs and children's play areas (small) and are very nice.

I believe the only zero entry pool is at SSR if that is important to you.

I love OKW as it's my home resort and I've never had a bad two bedroom apartment. Things have gone wrong , like the toaster blew up, but they were replaced within a very short space of time, so nothing major.

The reason I love OKW is the space and the laid back feel. The only thing that really bugs me is the lack of a decent food court as OKW has a shack with very limited choices.

If you have children then the extra space at OKW is great. Last April we stayed in a 2 bedroom at OKW - 4 adults and three teenagers and there was plenty of room. We were in a room facing the waterway and only a couple of minutes walk from their quiet pool by South Point - which was great in the evenings when you've just come back from a park.

I would love to stay at SSR but I truly love the space at OKW. To be honest, whichever one you choose you'll love!

Thanks guys, still no nearer making my decision, but thats good as it means I love the sound of both. Going to put on hold a little while as I've only got 3 days before i have to make ADR's for this August & i've not sorted the plans properly yet!

I'm right there with you, I really do keep swaying from one resort to the other :goodvibes both look fab but it depends on whether ds wants to come with us or not, I guess if he does then the extra space would be a bonus although it would be more space for him to make a mess in :rotfl:
