DH & I took an expected quick trip to WDW last month and toured SSR unguided. Does anyone know what the theater is used for?

Thanks...
Lori

Isn't DVC still using the theater for their weekly member updates? Last I knew it was still every Wednesday at 4:00pm.

I totallyt think they should make it a sit down resturaunt, running cartoons and having charactures..."The House of Mouse"

the theater is not part of SSR - it is not owned or operated by DVC.

Are you thinking of the movie theater at DTD maybe and not the SSR Cinema?

At SSR, the theater is still used for the member meetings every Weds at 4 PM.

someone (I think Doc) - asked and was told that SSR theater is not part of DVC.

several us of request the old cartons and old movies to be shown here.

which I am sure is why the vacation mag - had FW campfire movies in this issue. they are allowed to show old movies.

While the theater is used some by DVC, they do not own or operate it. The theater is owned by 'WDW hospitality'. The same division that owns the non DVC Disney resorts. The theater is operated by "Event Productions', the same people who operate the WDW convention centers.

We tend to throw around the term DVC rather loosely on this board. We use it when we're discussing Disney Vacation Development, Inc. (DVD), Disney Vacation Club Management Corp. (DVCMC), the DVC points system, operations that involve our DVC resort operations budgets, and anything within a DVC-branded resort.

But we're actually dealing with several different entities within the Walt Disney World Company, which is a part of The Walt Disney World Company.

For example, the restaurant and the shop at OKW really have nothing to do with DVC -- except that they're located within a DVC resort. The same is true at SSR and other DVC resorts.

So, DVCMC could lease the Cinema, and could fund activites there. But would SSR owners really want to see their dues go up? Or WDW could convert the Cinema to a restaurant, but only if they feel it would be a profitable business venture. For the time being, there's no business justification to convert the Cinema to anything else, and it's a useful facility for DVD's weekly DVC member meeting and probably for other purposes such as CM meetings.

In addition, there are two facilities at the resort that fit the description of "theaters".

One is the already mentioned "Cinema". When it was part of DI, it was used for programs (we went to a Valentine's Day program titled "Mickey Loves Minnie" - with vintage Mickey Mouse cartoons and a discussion by one of the Disney animators) and first run movies from the Disney family of films.

Another "theater" is the Performance Center which was used by DI for lectures and performances by noted personalities (James Earl Jones offered a poetry reading in the facility).

The programs offered in these DI facilities were not free - all were offerings thru the DI. If SSR (or DVC) wishes to offer programs in the facilities, it will either have to come from dues or be paid for on a pay-as-you-go basis. I'd guess that SSR members would rather not foot the bill for sustaining either facility.
