Just returned from a recon mission/morning walk from OKW to DD. We decided to cross the golf cart bridge at DI and walk around the old DI grounds.
I did get some up-close-and-personal pictures of the construction at SSR, but will have to wait another 9 days to post them here, since the fool who was supposed to pack the upload cable for my digital camera neglected to do so.
Construction is really progressing at SSR. It appears that the lakeside site that used to be home to the townhouse villas will hold 4 buildings. Foundation work for these structures appears to be complete and one building has the steel superstructure framing pretty well complete. You can identify where 1BR and studio villas will be located and which are dedicated 2BR villas.
Continuing to walk towards what was the theater and amphitheater at DI demonstrates that the area is now clothed in green barricade material. A peek behind the barricade reveals that the bungalow villas are now gone. There is one that remains (closest to the bridge), but all others are leveled and the ground is being prepared for whatever will follow. All of the DI classroom buildings are intact, along with the spa, former check-in area, theater, auditorium, restaurant, and TV studio- but the residential area is now bare ground and is scattered with earth moving equipment.
The Fairway Villas (now occupied by College Program CM's) and Treehouse Villas (now unoccupied) all still remain.
Some work is also being done on the marina area in front of the LBV Golf Course Club House.
We had a great day yesterday. For those old enough to remember the Turtles, they are performing at the American Pavillion Theater at Epcot as part of the Flower Power concert series for the Flower/Garden show. They put on a great show for old guys! (The Turtles and I and David Letterman are all the same age.) We took in 2 shows last night and will probably catch another today. Flo and Eddie (The Turtles) are here for 3 more days, then we'll catch The Grass Roots (3 days) and Herman's Hermits for 4 days.
OKW was at 90+% occupancy Thurs night when we arrived, but has dropped to 65% for the weekend- with a return to 90+% for the upcoming week. Still no notice of a Towel Train- apparently the recent reports/comments were successful to curtail that early morning itinerary.
I apologize about the delay in posting the SSR photos (and have some of the Turtles too!), but willl get them up as soon as I get home. I gotta have a word with the guy who packs my stuff for these trips!
92 degrees today. Parks are busy and all (except AK) have late hours all week.
As yesterday, we had a great walk this morning. Left the room a little before 7:00am and walked about 6 miles, stopping at So. Point for a swim on the way back to our room.
More when I find the time!
