SSR or WL?

We were in WDW last November and were supposed to stay at OKW for Thanksgiving week. After spending just one night there my husband and 2 sons begged to see if we could switch to SSR. The kids found the atmosphere "too peaceful"! It's a pretty resort but not what my family was looking for. We really like SSR and have stayed at Wilderness Lodge before we bought DVC. Wilderness Lodge was a lot of fun and we plan on staying at the DVC units in the future.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that has responded. If you have any other advice, I am still watching this board... So, once again thanks!

So what did you decide to do? Did you take the VWL waitlist or stay with SSR? Inquiring minds want to know!

WL has more of a wow factor than most other Disney resorts, and is one of the Disney resorts that is easiest to get immersed in the theme. IMHO, while nice, SSR is kind of bland in its theming. If you are looking at it from an activity standpoint, SSR probably has more to offer at the resort itself, but WL feels more like Disney to me. I am not sure if the SSR pool will matter much to your kids, as their ages seem older that needing zero entry, but not quite old enough for a full water slide, but that's your call.

As to SSR vs OKW, did you choose OKW for some particular reason (e.g., point cost, room size, 2 beds, etc?) If not, its a toss up. I like OKW better, feels more mature, intimate, relaxing, but SSR might have the edge with activities.

UConnJack is right about the wow factor of VWL, even my 21 yo son had that reaction when he saw it for the first time in December. AKL has the same wow factor for when the villas are opened there. Both of them are amazing resorts for that reason, if nothing else.

I also think that SSR & OKW are very similar in being nice, relaxing. laid back resorts.

We've gone ahead and decided that we definitely want to try the Wilderness Lodge for at least a portion of the trip. We're booked OKW for the first few days 03JUN-10JUN and then WL for 10-14JUN. Tried to get WL for the first half instead, but no luck so far. Only real debate in my house is to stay at OKW or SSR now. I'm leaning towards SSR for the pool, movies, etc...but DW wants OKW due to the two queen beds in the room. Still wait listed for WL 3-8JUN though in hopes of attacking the Magic Kingdom the first few days and then relaxing at OKW or SSR....Once again, thanks for all of the advice.

Don't know how old your kids are - but mine are young enough to think that the fold-out bed is the coolest, most incredible thing on the planet. I also like being able to fold the thing up during the day - makes the room look much tidier and gives us a place to sit that's not on a bed (especially since you don't get maid service to make the beds with DVC).
