IMG_0536.jpegWelcome to the “official” Saratoga Springs Resort and Spa thread, part 4!

This thread is intended to pick up where the 3rd thread, authored by @BirdsOfPreyDave, left off.

You can also find thread 1 here and thread 2 here, both authored by @mamaprincess.

I decided to create a new thread because Dave appears to have moved along to other passions, and a lot of the information at the top of the old thread was outdated. But much of the below is a straight pickup or modification of all the work BirdsOfPreyDave did on this page, and I want to acknowledge that much of the below isn’t my original work!

The purpose of this thread is to
  • Ask questions
  • Share stories
  • Tell tales
  • Share updates
  • Tell other people that, actually, SSR is great, thank you very much

ABOUT SARATOGA SPRINGS

Saratoga Springs is a DVC-only resort in the Disney Springs area of Walt Disney World. It is one of just 3 resorts on property with 2 feature pools, and has the most quick service dining options of any WDW resort, not even taking into account all of the walkable nearby dining. It is bordered by Old Key West and Disney Springs to the South, East Buena Vista Drive to the East and North, and Disney Vacation Club Way to the West, across which is found Disney’s 2 Port Orleans resorts. Lake Buena Vista Golf Course tees off at Saratoga Springs and plays through it.

The resort is themed to a turn-of-the-20th century equestrian village, a version of Saratoga Springs, NY that never actually existed. The horse racing themes are evident throughout, and the resort is intended to be laid back and less in-your-face with its theming than most other WDW resorts.

Saratoga Springs is split into 6 main areas; moving clockwise from The Carriage House:
  • The Springs, home to The Carriage House (dining, resort check in, shops and other amenities detailed below in “common areas”), the first feature pool, the boat launch to Disney Springs, and 3 guest buildings
  • The Treehouses, with 60 treehouse villas and a quiet pool
  • The Grandstand, with 4 guest buildings, a “quiet” pool with a splash pad, and a seasonal pool bar
  • The Carousel, with 2 guest buildings
  • The Paddock, with 5 guest buildings, the second feature pool, and a poolside QS restaurant and bar
  • Congress Park, with 4 guest buildings, a quiet pool, a playground, and a walking path to Disney Springs
Further detail on each section’s common areas is below:

COMMON AREAS

Saratoga Springs is big, but it’s laid out in a semi-circle pattern, so most rooms are a 7 minute walk or less to The Carriage House, the main building and home to resort check in.

The Carriage House actually predates Saratoga Springs, dating back to when the area was The Disney Institure. It is home to all of the shopping and most of the dining options at Saratoga Springs. These include Artist’s Palette, The Turf Club, and Chip & Dale's, with the High Rock Spring pool bar just outside.

Outside of The Carriage House are a series of other buildings, which house the Win, Place or Show Arcade, Community Hall, Fitness Center, and Horsing Around Recreation Rentals. This area also housed the Spa, which has not retuned after the coronavirus shutdown, and the DVC Preview Center. It is not clear what the plans are for those buildings at this time.

These other buildings surround a courtyard, where a campfire is held nightly, with free (!) marshmallow roasting.

Behind these buildings are Tennis, Shuffleboard, and Basketball courts; you can rent equipment from the Horsing Around Recreation Rentals.

Between the check in area and the spa is High Rock Spring Pool Area, one of 2 feature pools. High Rock Spring is a great feature pool, including:
  • Lifeguards
  • Activities and cast member led games throughout the day
  • Zero Entry
  • 128 foot long waterslide with a tunnel built into the rocks
  • 2 whirlpool spas
  • Kiddie water slide
  • Splash pad featuring Donald Duck
  • Handicap accessible lift
  • On The Rocks Pool Bar, a full-service bar (open year round) with a limited dining menu, details in the dining section
  • Mug Refill station
  • Laundry room

Across the bridge from The Springs is The Paddock area, with its own feature pool. The Paddock Pool area was expanded shortly after the resort opened to create another great feature pool, which includes:
  • Lifeguards
  • Activities and cast member led games during limited hours
  • Zero Entry
  • 146 foot long waterslide from a water tower
  • Horseshoe shaped whirlpool spa
  • A separate, fenced in kids splash pad / water play area (max height 48”) featuring 2 Kiddie water slides, one slightly more adventurous than the other
  • Handicap accessible lift
  • The Paddock Grill, a full -service bar (open year round) with various premade drinks, beer, wine, and spirits, as well as a significant number of Quick Service food options, including breakfast, more details in the dining section
  • Mug Refill station
  • Laundry room
For current and past daily activity schedules, see https://www.magicalresortguide.com/saratoga-springs-homepage

The Grandstand Pool area is somewhere in between a standard Disney quiet pool and a Feature pool. It features:
  • No Lifeguards
  • Traditional quiet pool layout, but with lighthouse fountains that are constantly pouring into the pool
  • 1 Whirlpool spa
  • Splash pad / water play area, intended for slightly older kids (maybe 4-6) than the others, with shootable water cannons
  • Backstretch Pool Bar, a pool bar (open seasonally) with a limited drink menu and limited food options
  • In the past, this has been a full bar; this has not returned post-Covid shutdown, but it is equipped for that to perhaps return in the future
  • Mug refill station
  • Laundry room
  • BBQ area
The Congress Park Pool area is a traditional quiet pool, featuring:
  • No lifeguards
  • 1 Whirlpool spa
  • Playground (dry)
  • Laundry
  • BBQ area
  • This is where Morning Yoga is held, when available
The Treehouse Villas Pool area is a traditional quiet pool, featuring:
  • No lifeguards
  • 1 Whirlpool spa
The Treehouse Villas do not have a common laundry or a BBQ area, as each villa has both of these.

The Carousel does not have a pool or laundry, but does have a BBQ area.

ROOMS

The largest resort on property, Saratoga Springs boasts 888 accommodations, or 1,320 if all of the Lock-off rooms are split.

Room Type# of rooms
Grand Villa36
2 Bedroom Dedicated360
2 Bedroom Lock-off*432
Treehouses60
*This means SSR has 432 studios and 432 1 bedrooms when all lock-off rooms are split

Other than the treehouses, these rooms are split across 18 identical buildings. Each building has 24 lock-offs, 20 dedicated 2 BRs, and 2 Grand Villas.

These 18 buildings are split into 2 “View” types, and 5 booking areas. They are as follows:

Standard
  • Carousel
  • Grandstand
  • Paddock
Preferred
  • The Springs
  • Congress Park
All of the Treehouse Villas are considered Standard View.

These views are based on the location of the building, and not what you will see out of your window. This is similar to the way rooms are categorized at several other multi-building Disney resorts, such as the All Stars, Port Orleans Riverside, and Old Key West, but differs from most other DVC properties.

Most rooms at Saratoga Springs overlook the pools, ponds, golf course, or Disney Springs. Only a very limited number have true parking lot views, typically rooms at one end of a building. The Treehouses mostly overlook the woods on all sides, a limited number have views of the water separating SSR from Disney Springs

Studio villas have a kitchenette with either a beverage cooler or a mini-fridge (there is no way to select which you will get), a sink, a toaster, a coffee pot, and a microwave. Coffee is provided, as are paper towels, disposable cups, utensils, and plates.

There is a queen bed as well as a couch that pulls down (wall bed style) into a second queen bed. The mattress on the wall bed is slightly thinner than the other queen (similar to a moderate resort’s standard mattress) but is far more comfortable than the pull out couches found at many resorts. The vanity has a single sink with a large counter top, and there is a separate room with the tub/shower combo and water closet.

Luggage can go under the bed or in the large closet in the bathroom. There is additional storage in the nightstands, coffee table, bench and dresser. There is no longer a table in the studios, however, the coffee table’s top can pull out and up to provide a dining surface to those sitting on the couch. Each room has a balcony or patio with 2 chairs and a small side table. A studio sleeps 4 + 1 in a crib.

1 Bedroom Villas have a full kitchen with a full size refrigerator and freezer, stove with range and oven, microwave, dishwasher, sink, coffee pot, and toaster. Real dishware is provided, as are pots and pans, baking sheets, various cooking utensils, measuring equipment, and a mixer. A blender can be requested. A starter amount of coffee and dishwasher detergent is provided, additional of each can be requested from guest services.

Each villa has its own washer and dryer. Enough laundry soap is provided for 2 loads, additional soap can be obtained from guest services. A basket is provided.

There is a dining table with a bench and 2 chairs. A high chair is also provided.

The living room has a TV, a couch with chaise, and a coffee table. The couch pulls down into a queen size bed with a proper mattress. Like the studio’s couch bed, it is slightly thinner than a typical deluxe villa mattress and more akin to one at a Disney moderate resort. In most rooms, an additional pull down bed can be found under the TV, this bed is in between the size of a toddler bed and a twin. It is significantly thinner than a standard mattress and is not optimal for adults or large teenagers. The Chaise may prove to be a better sleeping surface for these individuals, but the smaller pull down will be fine for most kids. Handicapped Accessible rooms do not have these small beds, and sleep 1 fewer people as a result. The coffee table’s top can pull out and up to provide a dining surface to those sitting on the couch.

The primary bedroom has a large dresser, TV, 2 night stands with outlets, and a King size bed with a Deluxe mattress.

The bathroom has 2 entrances, one from each the primary bedroom and the living room. The primary bedroom opens into a room with a large soaker tub, a large vanity with 1 sink, and a large closet. You can walk through that room into a separate room with a walk in shower and a separate, smaller vanity. This room opens into the living room. The water closet is also off of this room.

Each room has a balcony or patio with 2 chairs and a small side table. A 1-bedroom sleeps 5, except for HA 1-bedrooms, which sleep 4 due to the layout needed for accessibility.

2 Bedroom Lock-off Villas will be a Studio and a 1 bedroom as laid out above. They will have 2 bathrooms, 2 balconies, and sleep 9, except for HA ones, which will sleep 8.

2 Bedroom Dedicated Villas have a full kitchen with a full size refrigerator and freezer, stove with range and oven, microwave, dishwasher, sink, coffee pot, and toaster. Proper dishware is provided, as are pots and pans, baking sheets, various cooking utensils, measuring equipment, and a mixer. A blender can be requested. A starter amount of coffee and dishwasher detergent is provided, additional of each can be requested from guest services.

The second bedroom has 2 queen beds with proper deluxe mattresses. There is a single night stand with outlets between them. There is also a dresser, TV, and chair. The second bathroom vanity has 2 sinks on a large counter top, and there is a separate room with the tub/shower combo and water closet. A large closet is in the entryway to the 2nd bedroom.

Each room has 1 balcony or patio with 2 chairs and a small side table. A 2-bedroom sleeps 9, except for HA 2-bedrooms, which sleep 8 due to the layout needed for accessibility.

Treehouse Villas have a unique, unusual floor plan for a DVC resort. They have a full kitchen, including a full size refrigerator and freezer, stove with range and oven, microwave, dishwasher, sink, coffee pot, and toaster. Proper dishware is provided, as are pots and pans, baking sheets, various cooking utensils, measuring equipment, and a mixer. A blender can be requested. A starter amount of coffee and dishwasher detergent is provided, additional of each can be requested from guest services.

Each villa has its own washer and dryer. Enough laundry soap is provided for 2 loads, additional soap can be obtained from guest services. A basket is provided.

There is a dining table with a bench and 4 chairs. There are also 3 bar stools at the kitchen’s island. A high chair is also provided.

The living area has a couch and an armchair, each of these pulls out into a bed; the couch into a double/full, and the chair into a twin. They are not real mattresses, and neither is particularly comfortable for adults, but kids may not complain. It additionally has a 2nd chair that is just a chair; it has seating for 4-5 depending on how close you want to be on the couch. There are 2 end tables and a coffee table. The furniture faces a TV near the ground.

The primary bedroom has a queen bed; a king would not fit in the room. There are nightstands on each side of the bed (no outlets), as well as a bench, desk with chair, and small dresser. There is also a small closet. This bedroom has a private bathroom with a very large vanity with a single sink, as well as an unusual but very large shower/jetted tub area, which is hard to explain the layout of. The water closet is behind a separate door.

The second bedroom has a queen bed, a small dresser, and 2 night stands, as well as a TV. It also has a small closet. The nightstands do not have outlets.

The third bedroom is very small, it has twin size bunk beds, a small dresser, and a TV. There is also a small closet, a nightstand for the person on the bottom bunk, and a small shelving built in.

Near the second and third bedrooms is the shared bathroom, with a vanity with a single sink, a toilet, and a tub shower combo. The bathroom is fully functional, but small compared to other bathrooms at Saratoga Springs. It is the only shower at the resort where the showerhead does not remove.

The deck has a full size table with 4 chairs for dining outside, and down the stairs, a BBQ area. Climbing stairs is required to enter all Treehouse Villas. There is also a parking space for a single car. Additional cars may not be parked at the Treehouse Villas. They may be parked elsewhere at SSR.

Treehouse villas sleep 9 plus a guest under 3 in a crib.

Grand Villas have 3 bedrooms spread across 2 floors, each with its own entrance. Each also has a full kitchen with a full size refrigerator and freezer, stove with range and oven, microwave, dishwasher, sink, standard coffee pot, Keurig, and toaster. Proper dishware is provided, as are pots and pans, baking sheets, various cooking utensils, measuring equipment, and a mixer. A blender can be requested. A starter amount of coffee and dishwasher detergent is provided, additional of each can be requested from guest services.

Each Grand Villa has a large dining table that has 12 chairs, and has a service buffet nearby. The balcony is off of the dining area.

The living room has a couch with chaise and an armchair, and seats 4-5. The couch folds down into a queen size bed. The mattress is slightly thinner than a typical deluxe villa mattress and more akin to one at a Disney moderate resort. The coffee table’s top can pull out and up to provide a dining surface to those sitting on the couch.

Off of the living area is a spare bathroom with a vanity, toilet, and walk in shower. Additional closet space is also nearby.

The primary bedroom has a large dresser, TV, 2 night stands with outlets, and a King size bed with a Deluxe mattress, and a chair with an ottoman.

The primary bathroom has a large soaker tub, a large vanity with 1 sink, a large closet, and a separate room with a walk in shower and toilet.

There are 2 mostly identical bedrooms upstairs, each with 2 queen beds, a dresser, a nightstand, a TV, and a chair. Each has its own bathroom with a large vanity and a single sink, and a separate room with tub/shower combo and a toilet. Each room has a large closet available.

In between the 2 bedrooms upstairs is a nook with a chaise lounger and small table, this overlooks the living room. Nearby is the washer and dryer. Enough laundry soap is provided for 2 loads, additional soap can be obtained from guest services. A basket is provided.

Grand Villas sleep up to 12 + 1 infant in a crib.

BUILDING LAYOUTS

Every building is identical at SSR and uses the layout, as shown below. (Floor diagrams courtsey of DISboards user DMUNSIL)

SSR1st_zpsf9e84065.jpg

SSR2nd_zps78a3144d.jpg

SSR3rd_zps68bcfe54.jpg

The rooms facing the bottom of the U shape will have the best views in most cases (for example in Congress Park, these rooms face Disney Springs); the rooms on the ends will typically have good views, but a limited number will face parking.

DINING

Saratoga Springs has the most Quick Service options on property, with 3 proper QS restaurants, and an additional 2 pool bars (one seasonal). It is also home to The Turf Club, a full service restaurant lightly themed after social clubs of days gone by, and is a quick walk to Disney Springs, with boat and bus service there as well.

The Turf Club Bar and Grill is a Full Service restaurant themed to be a “racetrack clubhouse”. It is inside The Carriage House. It generally has steakhouse fare, although currently only 2 steak options. It is less expensive than most steakhouses on Disney property.

The Turf Club has a significant drink list (by WDW standards) and a full bar, including at least a dozen whiskey options, so they can make you whatever mixed drink you’d like if you don’t see something on the menu. Reservations are recommended but not required, and they have a walk up list you can join in the WDW app. It is one of the easier restaurants to book at WDW.

The Turf Club is only open for dinner, but you can wander into The Turf Club Lounge any time to look around or play on one of their pool tables. The cocktail lounge does not require reservations, and typically keeps longer hours than the main restaurant. The lounge has a limited menu focused on appetizers.

Artist’s Palette is the main quick service dining option at Saratoga Springs, and is the only QS with a full grab-and-go selection to go alongside the cooked foods. It also is home to the grocery selection for your villa’s kitchen. It typically opens before the parks do, and closes late, hours vary by day. Artist’s Palette has a mug refill station with a broad selection of refill options including hot beverages. It is located inside The Carriage House.

Aritst’s Palette allows both in person and mobile ordering. In person orders work differently than at most resorts; unless you buy grab-and-go foods, you will be given a table tracker, and the food will be brought to your table by a Cast Member. Indoor and outdoor seating is available.

Artist’s Palette has fairly typical American diner food options, meat, eggs, waffles, and potatoes are on the breakfast menu, lunch is mostly sandwiches, and dinner adds comfort foods like meatloaf. Pizza is available for lunch and dinner; Artist’s Palette has a real pizza oven.

There is also a substantial number of dessert options, many of which rotate seasonally.

Artist’s Palette is also the name of the gift shop, which is connected to the food shop.

Chip & Dale’s Café at Lake Buena Vista Golf Course is the final restaurant in The Carriage House. While technically part of the golf course and not the hotel, it is located steps from the boat dock, and they do serve non-golfers. It is open for Breakfast and Lunch only, although Lunch stretches until late afternoon most of the year. It is outside and all seating is outside, with a limited number of tables.

The breakfast options have remained unchanged for years, an egg and cheese sandwich with your choice or meat or a sausage, egg, cheese, and potato burrito. Joffrey’s coffee is also available.

For lunch they have hot dogs, wraps, and deli meat sandwiches, available with or without chips and a drink. As of 2024, all meats are Boar’s Head brand. Beer and tiny bottles of spirits for mixing into other beverages are available for purchase.

It probably is not be the ideal choice for a family with small kids, but for people who like deli sandwiches, the prices aren’t bad.

A hundred or so feet from The Carriage House sits On The Rocks Pool Bar, a full service bar in the High Rock Spring pool area. They have several premade drinks for purchase, or they can make you your own drink of choice from their menu. They carry about a dozen food items as well, which change periodically, but are generally a subset of the offerings at Artist’s Palette. Currently this restaurant is in-person-order only. It is not open for Breakfast, and hours change seasonally. A mug refill station is available here while the pool area is open.

Across the bridge from The Springs is The Paddock Grill, the third Quick Service restaurant at Saratoga Springs. The Paddock Grill is typically open all day, until the pool closes. A mug refill station is available here while the pool area is open.

Breakfast options are somewhat limited, with a bacon egg and cheese sandwich, Mickey waffles, and various grab-and-go items such as pastries and parfaits. Joffrey’s Coffee is available.

Lunch and Dinner share a menu, with the kinds of food you would find at an Applebees making up the menu. There are multiple options for kids, and Mickey Bars and other desserts are available all day.

The Paddock Grill has a full service bar. It is located outdoors.

Backstretch Pool Bar is the pool bar at The Grandstand Pool. Officially it operates seasonally, but what season that is can be hard to judge. It is more likely to be open 4th of July Weekend than a random Tuesday in January. Post-covid, its days of operation appear to have been increasing each year. Unlike the other pool bars, Backstretch Pool Bar does not typically stay open in the evenings. A mug refill station is available here while the bar is open.

Backstretch Pool bar is set up to be a full service bar but has recently been operating as a limited service bar with a decent variety of beer and wine options, but limited, premixed mixed drinks, generally the kinds of drinks you would get at a pool bar in the Bahamas.

GETTING AROUND

People have this impression that the transportation situation is bad at SSR, perhaps because its laid out like a moderate resort? In reality, transportation at SSR is pretty good. It never shares buses, the buses come frequently because of the resort’s size, there’s boats to multiple other resorts and tons of places to eat, and it’s an absolute dream if you have a car – you can park right outside your building, and drive to the
parks, to The Carriage House, to Universal or Sea World (or Fun Spot Kissimmee!), and parking is generally plentiful.

Disney Springs

Multiple walking paths are available to Disney Springs. The official path to Disney Springs is found at the end of Congress Park, and connects to the Marketplace area. It is open whenever Disney Springs is open. During daylight hours, Disney also allows people to walk along the cart paths to Disney Springs on the other end of the resort; a cart path crosses the Sassagoula River from between Treehouses 7030 and 7031, another crosses south of the Carriage House; you will then walk around the edge of the Strawberry parking lot until you reach the West Side entrance.

You can also take a boat to Disney Springs, the boats depart from near the Carriage House, and currently only stop on the Marketplace side of Disney Springs. For guests in the easternmost buildings at Saratoga Springs, it will be less walking to simply walk to Disney Springs via the Marketplace path. The boats use the BLUE flags.

Finally, you can take a bus to Disney Springs. These buses start at The Springs, then head to The Grandstand, The Carousel, The Paddock, and Congress Park, before heading to Disney Springs. Note that this is a different order than other buses take. Because this bus starts at The Springs, you can use it as internal transportation back to your room from the Carriage House or High Rock Spring Pool!

Old Key West

Old Key West is accessible on foot from Saratoga Springs during daylight hours. The “Saratoga Springs Nature Trail” is approximately a 1 mile walk along the Lake Buena Vista golf course. It is prohibited to walk on the trail after dusk. Alternatively, one can take walk or a boat to Disney Springs and transfer there to Old Key West; these boats typically run for several hours after sundown, check the Disney World app for exact times.

Port Orleans

One can choose take a boat to Port Orleans Riverside or Port Orleans French Quarter from the Disney Springs Marketplace; the dock is approximately a 1 minute walk from the edge of Saratoga Springs property.

Theme Parks and Water Parks

The rest of Walt Disney World is accessible by free bus transportation, your personal or rental car, or taxi or ride share.

These buses start at the Grandstand, then move to Carousel, The Paddock, Congress Park, and The Springs before departing to other parks.

If you are staying in a Treehouse, you will need to take a separate bus to the Grandstand bus stop and then transfer to a park bus from there; alternatively you can drive to any other bus stop.

Saratoga Springs never shares buses with other resorts.

Thanks for updating and keeping it fresh.....the one thing you do have very wrong is,,,,,,"tell other people that, actually, SSR is great."
No dont,,,I like being able to book my resort whenever I need it and have no issues....lol

Thank you for starting this thread. We have always enjoyed our SSR stays. My favorite pool is at Congress Park, because it’s one of the deeper ones, and I love the view it has of Disney Springs!

We do not have any upcoming SSR stays but my DSis asked specifically for it for their December stay coming up. They want to enjoy Disney Springs shopping and activities during the holidays.

Let me know if you see any mistakes!
I was trying really hard to ignore this but since you asked... C-A-R-R-I-A-G-E is the correct spelling (not carraige). It's misspelled throughout your new posts.

THANK YOU so much for starting this updated thread. My family discovered Saratoga Springs Resort in January of this year. We loved it so much that we spent another week there in March and will return in the Fall. It's a very special place!
