Friends,

We're taking our first trip home to SSR in the first week of January. Can someone share with me what the weather is like at that time? Is it feasible to use the resort pools? Are they heated? DD simply won't understand there being a pool there and not being able to go swimming.

Thanks!

Two words -- unpredictable and changeable. From mid-December through February you could have 80 degree days or 40 degree days. Nights could go as low as into the 20's and wind chills just make everyone miserable. It's also possible that you could have all of the above during a week long trip. Or, you could think it was summertime and that I'm nuts. ;) Throw in some heavier layers, hats and gloves and you may help to keep the cold away.

Hopefully, you will get those great 70-80 degree temps. There doesn't tend to be that much rain that time of year so that's a positive. And, yes. All WDW pools are heated. If it's really cold, they may shut down the slides so that the lifeguards don't catch hypothermia.

From Canada.......like us

We were there Jan 18-28 this year

Highest high was 81
Lowest high was 56

Highest low was 52
Lowest low was 30

The coldest day I went swimming on was one am - it was 47 degrees - went swimming at AKL Uzima Pool - was very nice until I had to get out :earseek: - only one other person in the whole pool

The coldest afternoon was 53 at BWV Luna Park Pool - only two other people in the whole pool - the slide was open (the lifeguard went up to the slide post and was amused that someone was actually swimming in that weather)

The pools were warm , the air was not

I would take two towels and a heavy sweatshirt - dry up top real fast and then pop on the sweatshirt and sandals and get inside really fast

Good Luck!

Here comes the statistics:

For Jan 1 - Jan 8

Avg High: 71-72 F
Avg Low: 48 F
Mean: 60 F

Record High: 86 F
Record Low: 26 F

However, PamOKW is correct - you'll need to plan for a wide range of weather.

Oh, and I see that you're from my neighbor to the south (I live in Metro Detroit - Canada is due south of us!) you'll have to convert to Celcius. I tried, but I don't think I got it right - unless the Avg High is supposed to be 479.6 C ....

And Welcome Home!

We had great weather in January '03, but I agree it is completely unpredictable. Two days before we arrived I believe they set a record (or near-record) with the HIGH temps not even getting into the 50s.

By the time we got there, temps were reaching into the high-60s / low 70s for all 6 days of our trip. Most days we started out in shorts, tee shirts and sweat shirts. By mid morning the sweat shirts were gone and we were comfortable in the sun all day. We even spent an afternoon at Typhoon Lagoon--although by the time the sun started to set it got really nippy out of the water.

Bring everything from shorts and tee shirts to winter coats and gloves. And thank the DVC gods for those in-room laundry facilities. :)
